This takes me back to my teens as a chorister, as it was the earliest "early music" I learned. I especially appreciate the treatment of "finden" (between short "i" & long "e"). Just gorgeous a cappella. So glad to find it here. Kudos to Rachel Carlson, Washington Master Chorale, Thomas Colohan, Christian Amonson.
Thank you so very much for sharing this xxx
I have been smoking pot and listening to different recordings of this. This is my favorite one. I thought it felt too slow at first but it’s not. The balance between vocal parts is better than any of the other recordings I’ve heard. I would be proud to sing with this choir.
Wow, thanks for the confessional. I've been doing the same thing (no pot). It does seem a bit slower at first, but this makes it easier to distinguish the parts. It's a short cut at any time signature & a longtime favorite of mine. I have wished for more verses, but that might take away from its power. Best wishes, jcl. That you are listening to this (& these) says much about you. I think you'd be an interesting person to know. I'm with you here, man.
Absolutely gorgeous, I used to sing this in the Humphry Davy Grammar School Choir and it's still one of my favourites
What a beautiful, precise version, sung at a good tempo. Thank you.
Beautiful tempo!
absolutely beautiful! I love singing along with the altos
So do I, Maria. I love pine trees & am a tenor now, but still sing the alto line.
Very rich sound and excellent balance. The speed is a little slow for some tastes, but for such a large vocal group is probably safer. As Boris Ord was probably D of M at King's College Cambridge when he wrote this carol, the chapel's beautiful but wide acoustic was not ideal for a high 'velocity' performance.
I don’t understand the need for speed.. this is the correct tempo for all to navigate beautifully and for the listener/congregation to actually understand the words and appreciate the harmonies!!
Precise, but too slow. This is the tempo you should be aiming for: th-cam.com/video/626Nrbtwtao/w-d-xo.html
That was my first impression; I learned the song at a faster tempo. Unfortunately, the cut to which you refer mispronounces "finden" in Old English, so is also imperfect. Let's just rejoice in all of these versions available online of a song written in about 1400.
Way too slow
