Hi Nice job on the injector tubes, super that you got the tools to do them right, shops are obviously not up to the job, Lenny ran so much smoother after Joe set them right, and now you can do the same, a good old handmade thumbs up.

I scrolled through the comments before I opted to add my own..& this is it: With my cars, if I didn't do the work on them myself, I was very, let's say, exacting on who laid hands on them. And even with that, there were times when my cars came back different(and not in a good way) from when I dropped them off. This from supposedly "trained technicians". If this is my bus, my $1500, that machine shop had better be top notch - because the technicians that are coming cross-country to service my bus don't have a moment to waste. Every moment spent having to redo something is a moment stolen from the final assembly & testing, & you can bet I'd "put you on blast" if my parts come back worse off than when they left. Time to name names - you've got 70K+ subscribers behind you... we may not all own buses/coaches, but none of us would appreciate paying for sloppy workmanship.

They probably oiled the heads to prevent rust and the shop had some grinding or polishing dust floating around, and attached to the wet surface.

Scott: another vote for cheap MDX plywood. Trust me, I used t live down there in tomball Tx. The dirt is too soft especially when wet! It will be the best $20 bucks the owner can spend!!!!! I invested in the machines around 35yrs ago & have updated to newer ones as time has went on! If u are ever near Wv & need it done I can do it & it will be done rite! I have a place in Midland Nc that I go to get away from time to time! Which is just a rocks throw from Albermarel Nc!

After all the “work” was done to those heads, they should have been hot tanked one last time to get the grinding grit out of them, then masked off and painted before final assembly.
You will now have grinding grit distributed throughout your engine courtesy of the valve job.

If It were my cylinder heads I would removing a valve or four and inspecting the valves to make sure they were properly machined, giving the valves the wiggle test in the guides, looking rather closely at the valve seats etc. I can accept the heads being painted the wrong color but a head that is dirty sets alarms off in my book. It would stink to put the heads together and then have problems and be tearing them back off again. Perhaps it time to find a semi retired Detroit Diesel guild machinist that is still taking in work. O well just a thought. Keeping my toes crossed for you all that everything goes as planned.

The real problem is in assuming that a specific machine shop knows what needs to be done. There once was a time, when there was enough of that type of work that as people advanced in the career as a machinist they learned from older more experienced guys. No more. Today, the people doing the Work know just enough to turn out product that looks right. They don’t actually know what to do, and unless the customer can be very specific in his requirements and is willing to verify that the work was done correctly, you get what you get. The take away is, never assume the person working for you knows his job.

Same with all the manufacturers machine shops couldn't stay in business started taking a big hit. We used to build engine that was in your truck now you just trade it out. I seen this Recon crap I'll still rebuild my own just too old to do it. Be sure to check where the ejector seats notice you were cutting them very very very easy to cut them too thin and they'll crack dumpwater I'm telling you that engine is a piece of crap. Those copper injector cups hold the injector into the head, and coolant runs around them to keep them cool. If the cup is not pressed in right, or the thickness of the cup is off from the others, the injector tip will either stick out too far or not enough. And since the injection event is also the combustion event, it can mess up the timing of that cylinder. As Scott was showing, they are within limits, but making them all the same gives the best performance, and is also perfectionist work! The speed drill he was turning was shaving off some of the metal inside the injector cup so when the injector is put in place, the tip extends to where it should within the cylinder. To the naked eye, you would not notice the variance. However when driving, you could. Just some fun things with Diesel engines!
