Some little mistakes, but I tried to match with the tabs made by Ihsahn in the Scattered Ashes songbook.
Guitars and bass were intentionally over-mixed in order to hear them well.

- Guitar (for Ihsahn part): Custom guitar made by the luthier Paprika in Toulouse (FR)
- Guitar (for Samoth part): Epiphone les Paul standard Plus 1996, with Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Humbucker
- Bass: Fender Jazzbass Mexico
- Amp: Hugues & Kettner Grandmeister 36 head, Red Box output used for recording
- Audio editing: Steinberg Nuendo
- Video editing: Sony Vegas Pro 13

one of my fav Emperor songs. I think you did an awesome job. I am glad you mentioned the tab book, i wasn't aware one existed, i've only been playing for a year so i don't have a good ear (or skills for that matter to play) but I think I will grab this book.
+s-viv Thx a lot !! Yes, the songbook is the best source, as it was done by Ihsahn himself. I used it for all my covers (for the tracks that are described in the songbook).
If you know how to read music score, you can also check the "In The Nighside Eclipse" score (no tabs in it, only classical score).
+emperialAnthems ihsahn is amazing, one of my favorite musical artist. I can read music, I will have to pick that up to..my teacher is into sheet music, maybe we can work out of that book :) keep up the good covers, I'm hoping to learn something by watching you play.

+emperialAnthems already am subscribed :) and have watched a handful of vids. I get the impression from interviews that he is extremely humble person, unfortunately he doesn't tour the states. I'd love to be able to post some yt vids one day, not sure how many years but I feel it takes awhile to play at this level and a ton of practice hours. I don't have a practice partner to play metal with so I try to learn pick hand by observation.

Hey man, I'm a big fan of your work, Emperor is my favorite band also. Could you cover some lesser known songs like The Acclamation of Bonds(Anthems) or simply play some riffs with just clean tone? I feel that many songs have the coolest riffs but you can't hear them clearly because of all the distortion. If you have the Ashes tab book, you know what i mean. :-)

Acclamation of Bonds is one of my favs tracks too, and as you stated it is difficult to hear the complexity of the riffs, due to the particular production of Anthems...That's why I wanted to cover first all tracks listed in the Ashes songbook, in order to be sure to play the exact correct parts for all instruments. The only remaining track to cover is I Am the black Wizards, which is currently under recording in collaborative mode.
I can try to cover Acclamation, or Ensorcelled by Khaos, with the risk of not being fully accurate....
Some songs from IX Equilibrium are pure dope too, like Warriors of Modern Death for example....

What effects and rough setting did you use for this guitar sound? Thanks in advace

The guitar sound is mainly my direct amp sound (Hugues & Kettner Grandmeister 36 head) without using reverb. I used the Red Box output of the amp and entered in a little Prosonus Audiobox USB interface plugged on my PC.
Then, my tracks are recorded in Steinberg Nuendo 4. On each track I just added a small compressor, EQ and reverb (not to much).
Finally, after the mix of all my tracks + the original song from Emperor, I just done a quick mastering with the Isotope Ozone5 plugin, in order to clarify the final sound.
This is the rough setup I used for recording. For the specific settings on the amp, I don't remember as I changed it many times since I recorded this song.
Today, I have a better sound interface, an RME Babyface, and I use a Mac with Logix Pro X, but the principle is exactly the same. You can ear this on my "The Loss and Curse of Reverence Cover" for example (th-cam.com/video/1y-_IAEe7wE/w-d-xo.html).

I am just wondering what effects did Ihsahn used on the greatest piece of music ever composed (aka Anthems to the welkin at dusk) :P Supposedly he used only delay (at least for the live performance of the songs) but there is a sense of Echo also in it? In any case I bought a BOSS DD-7 and I'm fooling around to approximate this sound. For the rhythm parts mainly. Something that wont spoil the straight forwardness of the amp but will add this "chaotic-echo", if you get my point. In any case, again, HAIL EMPEROR
+putareal7 Unfortunately I don't have the exact detail of all the gear and effects he used on Anthems, which is also my absolute greatest album of all times :)
Concerning the delay, as I explained, I record the sound straight from the amp but with no effect. If needed I add them via plugins in Logic X.
I have a H&K GrandMeister 36 Head, so I could use the effect module (including a delay) already embedded in it but I only use them when playing live.
For this recording, I didn't used any delay, in order to keep the "clearer" sound as possible, as for a cover I find it important to ear clearly what is played, as this can maybe help other guys to see how you have to play it (especially on the tricky parts of this song, for example between 5:52 and 6:53, or for the soli...).
