I love both versions .. the original is so fun …in Tommys version I actually hear the lyrics for the first time .. and it’s a fantastic love song 😀 it’s recorded on site in the last leg of this spring Sabaton tour ( hence the ports potties) in Germany, Finland and back in Sweden and Tommy was really sick part of it. .. but he was going home to his girlfriend after 2 month .. I think it shows 🔥 ,, for the Sabaton tour Tommy had to record at least 10-14 songs in 2 weeks to be able to do his Friday releases on tour .. a good thing he took a break during July .. he needed one 😇
Edit: vacation at least from his YT Friday covers .. he has still been doing gigs and YT stuff with Majestica and been invited as guest artist to a couple of concerts in Sweden 😂

The guitar you liked is likely Tommy's white charvel w one of 2 Sabaton "wraps" on it... metallic blue w a lion and 3 crowns in gold...its the Crest of Sweden, so I've been told.

It's just such a happy bop of a song that brings a smile on your face.

Though the 1988 (original) version by the Proclaimers was good (The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Official Music Video), it didn't have the full "flavor" of (Celtic Thunder's) George Donaldson's version that he repeatedly performed with the group, until he passed away in 2009. His final performance of it (or at least the last one, as far as I know, that can be found from before he passed away), can be found by using this title: Celtic Thunder - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Live From Ontario / 2009) ft. George Donaldson.
It's that version that Tommy Johansson obviously used as his inspiration for this video. He pretty successfully mimics most of George's moves, which were viewed by 1000s over the years when he sang the song with C.T.
As for the "outhouses" behind him several times, I went and checked out the video itself, in full screen, on my 32" monitor. They are lined up inside of what seems to be a train station, which would be consistent with all of his other featured areas on his 500-mile journey. It's a place that represents traveling, as well as a place where there might not be many conveniences, since it's supposed to be a HARD thing to walk those 500 miles just to see, "you." Or, it could simply be the one place in an arena where he might have been performing at some time, where he could practice, perhaps. Who knows? It really has no bearing on the song.
The orchestral background, again, comes from the Celtic Thunder/George Donaldson version. He may even have been using their instrumental sound track. As for the extra sounds, I think he was trying to get in some of the effects that would happen when C.T. performed it live. The audience was ALWAYS thoroughly and energetically engaged, and making a lot of noise, themselves. 😀
Now, if you could somehow get hold of Dan Vasc and ask if he'd do this song with a "metallic flourish," I'd bet you'd get a HUGE amount of both subs and likes when you react to it! \0/

I admire your thorough research (and George - every time hearing him in My Land or Caledonia with Celtic Thunder reminds how young he was when he had to pass). 🕊️
And Tommy did an amazing job here.

As you noticed, Harmonic Chaos, the action happens in the background of this music! Christmas bells and all.
    - And Tommy singing with his usual high voice there.
    ...Listen to the background...

I love the original and I also really love what Tommy did with this cover. He did make it quite different while still keeping the spirit of the original, and I really love that. Like you said, quite lot of instrumentals, making it feel more like a symphonic metal cover. I recommend checking out Majestica, they have so many amazing songs. Try with Above The Sky (I recommend checking that 1 first), Metal United, Rising Tide or Night Call Girl (fun tribute to 80's songs)

The instrument is glockenspiel not xylophone and I like the french horns too, very good and happy version.
