    In the final round, the Flanker's missile missed because the Hornet pulled the throttle and turned nose on (the coldest aspect), making the flares the hottest target in sight. In every round, the Flanker stayed in burner, even with a missile incoming, providing a nice hot target for the missile.

    • @HypoceeYT
      @HypoceeYT 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Cool story anyway modern IR missiles are based on imaging sensors precisely so that it isn't that simple. Against a modern missile it's more about the flares disrupting the plane's shape and apparent bearing change, messing with the gain/contrast, or fortunately forming a plane-shaped blob.
      As for how it's simulated in DCS, it's anyone's guess but as far as testing can tell it's just a die roll with a couple linear adjustments tacked on. So, pareidolia.

      @@HypoceeYT Based on my experience, IR missiles in DCS don't track an idle engine as well as an engine in burner, and they don't track as well nose on.
      Yes DCS uses random number generation to decide hit or miss, but the hit probability goes down with the the engine heat.

    Fun fact: Years ago the sidewinder's countermeasure resistance wasn't as good as the engineers thought it was. They designed it with a very narrow range of flare intensity. But Soviet / Russian build quality is so poor that the flares weren't consistent enough for the missiles to filter them out as flares.

    In regards to your history lesson about the J-15, China was only allowed a total of 200 licensed Su-27 copies, which would be the J-11A. The J-11B and J-15 were very much breaches of their deal with Russia. Which in hindsight they should not have ruined, as China has struggled domestically in terms of engines and avionics, and many of their early production of J-11Bs and J-15s had unreliable airframes and engines because their agreement with Russia, didn't come with the engine package. The only advantage J-15 has over Su-33 is its catapult capability. Unlike Su-33, you can hook the J-15 up to a catapult and not worry about wrecking its landing gear. But unless China has completely fixed their airframe and engine problem, dogfights like this in the J-15 would be a matter of "how quick can you bend over and take a 9X up your ass?"

    • @imza5535

    Maybe drop the restriction on firing before the merge and give each player a Fox-1 or two to force a "dirtier" merge (i.e, not necessarily a super-close pass and where neither party necessarily is in an optimal position and attitude)? It would make the approach more interesting and potentially make 2-circle capabilities more relevant in HOBS fights.
    Basically, try simulating the tail end of a BVR fight and the transition into a dogfight instead of simulating an exercise dogfight that's not likely to happen in real combat.

      I'm aware. I've seen the missions with them as adversaries. I'd like to see him perform missions in the J-15 and Su-33. Like an emergency scramble from a base to intercept a threat in the Flanker-D or J-15. It would be pretty awesome to see

    The 2nd Fox 2 on the first round went for the flares and pulled a "Uh! Shiny!" at the very last moment haha

    7:45 is what all of you should take from this lesson from Professor Sidewinder. Watch that ventral speed brake deploy. The Flanker was designed to kill Eagles. He dropped energy at the merge and allowed room for the Fox 2 to operate within parameters. Ask any Raytheon or Lockheed Engineer.

    10:02 dropping flares while full afterburner does not help either.

      Exactly lol, that's how his archer missed there in that last dogfight too, because the hornet disengaged his afterburner while flaring

    Would be good to see the difference vectorial thrust it makes into this fight.

    Simulating weapons performance is more complex than you might imagine. Some simulators used by military customers have dedicated computers within their systems that ONLY model weapons performance, and have NO other purpose. And they're very powerful computers relative to the computing power of the rest of the simulation system.

    I dont know if this would work but it would be kinda cool having a missile cam, like somehow put a cam on the back of the missile pointing forward so it would be like a pov of the missile

    I keep wondering if anyone is working on a missile system that can lock and shoot to the rear of a fighter. Big surprise, you try a tight turn after a merge, and your bogie hits you and he never tried to turn.

    • @corok12
      @corok12 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      already exists on the f-35 with the new(ish) aim-9x block 2

    • @emmavaria
      @emmavaria 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      One problem is that the velocity of the fighter is added to the velocity of the missile. By firing to the rear, the two oppose and the actual velocity of the missile through the air is very, very low. It will have next to no ability to intercept the enemy.

      When was the last time anyone merged in real combat? Feels like people are focusing investment on BVR because it's the most strategically relevant engagement type we expect to see foe these platforms

    what does high off bore sight mean? missle lock when they're off to one side, not right in front of the nose of your plane?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      exactly, think of a bore sight like that of a rifle, the bore sight is right down the centre of the aircraft, now imagine a missile that can lock a target 90-120 degrees off that centre bore sight, thats a high off bore sight missile.

    i'm french and not sure to well understand what means "to jam", i guess it's only about minimizing the missile's range. so the flares aren't part of the jamming ? even while creating like a wall ?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      correct, technically if you have the WEZ jammed, you don't need the flares, but you flare just in case. but if you're sure its min ranged, then no need for flares.
