Say what you will about Damon as a character ( and there's a lot to nitpick), but he is the soul of VD. Ian's brillant portrayal is also one of the main reasons of Damon's ( and ultimately the show's) popularity.
Stefen's arc might be more moving and compelling ( pun intended) for me as a viewer, but Damon as a character has my heart right now. (Still on S3 btw).

We have a pretty good idea of what Stefan is like as a Ripper, so he had to of compelled them.
