I just purchased this lens. Used Mint condition 1,200 US. I understood going in that this lens came with challenges. After only a week, I am still riding the fence on weather to keep it or not. I have the Canon 85mm f/1.8. But after seeing your awesome stills, maybe I should give it more of a chance, and practice. I wish there were more videos like yours to show what this lens is capable of. Thanks for this video Sir.
Hi Gerald, it is not an easy lens to work with. What I found was that I needed to change that way I shot when using it. You need to take your time, compose, check focus, check focus again, check exposure, check focus one last time and then shoot ;) But all the extra time is worth the images that it gives you, and using this lens and changing up the way you shoot also helps your photography grow, because now you are really thinking about the image, not just grabbing a frame. Hope this makes sense? It worked for me years back when I owned one of these, I changed the way I shot completely and has made me a better photographer.
It all makes sense now. Just too many reviews out there citing perceived fatal flaws with this lens. CA, Slow focus, Shallow dof (too difficult to manage). My lens focuses fast, for what I do with it. CA is dealt with easily in LR. Lastly, Dof @ 1.2 is the payoff!!! When I woke up this morning I had my lens listed on ebay for sale. Not anymore. I ended the auction, and went out and shot with it today. Very happy with the results, so much more to explore. Probably a 90% keeper rate. In short, Thank you for your help and advice Shayne. Wishing you well in SA. Gerald Barton, New Jersey, USA.
I recently rented this lens (because I was considering buying it) and did a whole day of photographing with it. Yes, it was difficult at times, but once you get the hang of it you'll love it. The bokeh is sooooooooo beautiful. Just ordered my own lens and I can't wait to go out and use it.
Hi Hasan, hope you are well. If you can afford the Canon 85 1.2 DO IT! If not the sigma is not a bad option either. I just prefer the Bokeh from the Canon more and the colours are stunning.
Great video, surprisingly detailed yet concise. Some really beautiful images as well. Which actually many of the reviews on youtube lack. I've looked and looked and I don't think there's another lens out there that can capture images that look like those that the 85mm F/1.2 can produce. I'd really like to know who performed the version of the music you used in the video? I've tried google but I keep getting different versions of this song.
Hi Daniel, so sorry I missed this comment man. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. The song is Not Us by Loving Caliber, absolutely love this band. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/hG30sT6b1Qs/w-d-xo.html
@@Sk8School Thank you so much for replying and the link. For some reason I didn't see the notification that you replied. I did buy a copy of the EF 85mm F/1.2. It's a beautiful, beautiful lens. The focusing works really well on the EOS R.
Absolute beauty. Do you recommend it for sports? I shoot alot of MMA and kickboxing stuff. I'm thinking either this or the Sigma 100-400mm. Any thoughts?
Hi there, sorry I missed this comment :( I would not recommend this for any action sports, the lens is too damn finicky and you will get upset with yourself for "missing focus" on great shots by mistake. I would 100% suggest a 70-200 2.8 for any type of action photography. Sorry again for the late comment and thanks for watching
Nice video. 85mm on a crop sensor is equivalent to 135mm and that is still a good portrait lense. 135mm at F1.2 is not bad at all esp for headshots. The isolation and clmpression is out of this world and you cant replicate it with a 70-200 at same focal length.
These are stunning images and video. How much post production have you done on them? I'm thinking of getting this lens with my 5D Mark IV for shooting video and I'm interested to know how it'll look straight out of the camera. Thanks
Thank you for the comment and compliment. There is some post production done, but mostly just adding luts and some slight adjustments. This lens is amazing, but as I said in the video, it is not an easy lens to use and the slow focus can be frustrating at times.
This lens and my 50 1.2 L by far my favorite two lenses. Keeping them for life.
Would have to agree, absolutely love the 50 as well.
Nice video thanks 👍
Would you say this is better to film with this lens rather then the Canon RF 85mm F/2 STM?
Love the pics and clips that you shot with this lens!

That is epic, so glad I could help out man. Makes me all warm inside, have a great day bro

Still one of the best vedio on this lens
Thanks for this video. Just asking, what camera did you use to take portraits in this video and the one you used infront of you? Thank you
Can u plz guide me, should I buy 85mm 1.2 or sigma 85 1.4? I need colors rendering bokeh, no need of sharpness

@@Sk8School Thanks🙂
the structure of this review is one of the best i’ve seen in this photo/video niche - bravo!
was the talking part also filmed on a 85mm 1.2?
Thank you, I really appreciate that :) Yes, the talking par twas shot on the 85. Such a fun lens to play with.
can you tell me what camera you are using with this lens? it looks amazing!
It was the 5DMK 4
@@Sk8School thank you!
Just saw one at €720 secondhand. Pretty sure I can't resist it at that price :D
Hello! Who's song is it? Can't find....
Hi there, sorry I missed this comment.
The band is called Loving Caliber here is a link: th-cam.com/video/hG30sT6b1Qs/w-d-xo.html
I have 6 L lenses and the 85 1.2 L is my most favorite.
Without a doubt the most iconic lens ever made,
What other L lens do you have?
@@simonburger My L lenses are 8-15 fisheye, 24-70 f2.8 II, 70-200 f2.8 II, 35L II , 85L II , and 135 f2.

So would I, and I will and soon as budget allows.
But waiting to see what other toys drop in the near future first ;)
2,500 - 3,000 Rand! Of course. Phew! At first, I thought you said grand. 🤭

I love 135mm as a portrait length, was one of my fav's when I had a crop camera.
85 at crop camera its not f/1.2 - it will be GRIP wit equvivalent if f/1.92 (im write about SIZE of GRIP)

it is hard to decide between 85 1.2 and 1.4..
It is, let the choice come down to your budget.
If you can afford the 1.2 go for it, if not then the 1.4 is NOT a bad second prize ;)
Canon prides itself on being the best bokeh target, appears helios 44-2 and canon bows before her.
Agree with you 100% and the new RF 85 lenses are INSANE!
