    I respect the previous comment on this video; however, I also have great respect for the role play that is exemplified here. As a first year grad student studying Rogers and humanistic psychology, I profited greatly from watching this, albeit scripted, thorough and earnest example of actual Rogerian therapy. I learned a lot and thank you for helping me on my journey.

    I know some people have commented on the lack of empathy and congruence. However, that is not something I feel you can learn from others, it is something you develop as you grow. I have no issues with that but I have found it immensely helpful to learn from the techniques shown here.

    I don't care about anything in the video but about the good part. I could see very clear how the "person-centered" therapy was performed and I learned a lot from it. I could also see how a teenager client can be with a therapist, the questions they do, the way they act, and even the 'problem' example that is very similar to other adolescents' problems. I love it. I noticed the leg of the girl but I just ignored because I was looking to learn something, not to judge or criticize the video or the actors. Excellent example of the "person-centered therapy", thank you for sharing it.

    I appreciated the example of the client being upset that they weren't getting a straight answer on how to "fix their problem" and that "why they are going to therapy"... This seems to me to be at the core of Rogerian philosophy - the client already has all of the answers. They might not feel that or even know it, or believe it! But when we provide the space for them to move all of their frustrations and disappointments then a clearer more congruent answer will come forward for them. Do I have this right?

    I am just starting to do my Counselling training and found this immensely useful. I found the techniques I was looking for as early examples. Yes it was devoid of emotion but that allowed me to look for the basic skills as outlined and knowing I would bring my own to the table almost like a blank canvas. Thanks

    Aggghhh! PCT is not taught via role-play, but by 'real-play' and the development of confident authenticity/congruence in encounter groups. It is about being genuine, and working with attitudes, not 'strategies'(!). The goal is not to help the client 'achieve self-actualisation', because she is always actualising. These points are subtle, but really important.

    • @vannielau285
      @vannielau285 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      well said...this is what actualizing tendency and she is "becoming" her own fully functioning person

    • @JuanPerez-cf9dg
      @JuanPerez-cf9dg ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel what you are saying. When they said in the beginning about looking for empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard as a "strategy" make it seem like a therapist uses it as a means to an end. Which takes the empathy portion out of it, and is keening in on anticipating a certain response rather than being in, with, and for a client's experience of subjective exploration.
      Plus, I saw the Gloria tapes about five times, and I was kind of cringing when the role-playing therapist copied quotes from Rogers in that session. It seemed a bit forced... This contradicts the environment Person-Centered therapy is attempting to construct within a session.
      Role-Playing takes the authenticity of a situation and emotions out of an experience, because the experience may not be real. This is why I agree with you when you say that Person-Centered therapy is not taught via role play. Empathy is not a strategy, it is a process of being with another person.

      It is actually impossible to demonstrate person centered therapy in a roleplay. The content has to be real so the empathy can be real. Congruence and genuineness are so important.

    the therapist showed good empathy but would a Rogerian therapist say ...." and if his love for you is based on a picture whats the good of that?" surely this is leading the client ........obviously they have written the script and the therapist in some of this video is quoting directly from Carl Rogers in the Gloria videos...........thanks for making the video though good to watch as a learning tool.

    • @NoName-di4qq
      @NoName-di4qq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is a role play to demonstrate the techniques. It makes sense to have a script because the "client" is not really a client and you specifically want to highlight certain techniques. In a regular session, you might not get to all the techniques. Lots of times, it takes multiple session to just establish rapport with the client. This is just a simply 8 minute video designed to summarize and show the main strategies

    • @remigiusdemby7433
      @remigiusdemby7433 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anthony, you are quite right. The role-play appears to be mechnical with participants reading from the script.

  • @saroushen
    @saroushen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The therapy and the video was very helpful; but the notes weren't necessary. I think you need to diagnose the girl in pink with amnesia because she couldn't remember why she went to therapy. She had to write everything down as a reference. I understand notes, but that's literally her life on paper. Oh and also, I'm no doctor, but looking at her feet, she might want to get her right foot checked out before it bends into another dimension.

    The video shows precisely what it announces: a technique.
    And what comes is just as automated and cold as is a technique to be expected. I can find no relation to Rogers since he was trembling of warm empathy.

    I watched the video as emailed to me by one of my students and after searching for it again, can see that it was never intended to be any other than a demonstration of skills. Having said that, l believe it would have value as a classroom resource, not because it is a good and realistic example of person centred counselling, but because it is a highly flawed example and at best, because questions are asked when reflective responses should have been given, an example of an integrated model with person centred and cbt. Students need to consider this if using it to support their skills work assignments. The fast pace is misleading too, if you try to work with your client at the pace that is possible with a script you are soon going to tie yourself (and your client) in knots rather than create a therapeutic safe space. Remember that is a role play by someone who thinks the core conditions are strategies. You students know that's incorrect, don't you?

  • @amberrieff2232

    Empathy,...are NO techniques. By all means. They are a way of being with another human being, deeply trusting in (self)actualization.
    It is something that in my opinion cannot be tought as it was a technique. It simplyand only in its depth can be experienced. And then - hopefully - given further.

    This is not person centered please can therapist and educators out there stop doing this. Let's clear this up, person centred counselling is not forced or a role play . It's about engaging at an existential level through the development of a therapeutic relationship. The natural process of empathy and the other conditions of therapy are established in a natraul way allowing the relationship to deepen. It's at the level of meeting each other that healing takes place. This is a deep meeting and one that is not forced or directed by any party. It's not a strategy or technique. Please before you demonstrate this approach understand it fully

    Not an expert here, but felt that the "life coach" sound very "dry" (even that is a demonstration video)Not sure how this conversation would look for real. In my opinion, frustrated 16 yer old demands answers, which simply not going to get, however, for me there is not interaction, no bound, nothing the teenager can hold on to. Sorry. "I can't", " I wish" simply thrown in the air...didn't felt any empathy at all.
