    I love NDSP plugins, and appreciate them replicating hard to find or more obscure amplifiers... but it does feel like they release guitar plugins too often. It would be cool if they threw some other analog gear in there to change things up.

    Nobody gives me plugin fatigue more than NDSP to be completely honest. I have Nolly and I find it hard to justify getting anything else from them even though I'm just a recording artist and I don't play live or anything. Prices are kind of expensive, are never on sale and a few don't really sound THAT different. So I agree with your criticisms on this and appreciate your honesty.

    • @GOAT-rl2uq

      My bigger gripe is honestly just that they put out three "prog metal" packs in a row (Plini, Nolly, Abasi), and I honestly don't see the point. I got the Nolly Archetype. When they released the Abasi and this, I wasn't even slightly tempted to buy them because they don't really do anything all that different. If they put out something for an underserved market, like Doom, then it'd be different.

    • @kornklone
      @kornklone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@GOAT-rl2uq That's a good point. Nolly is (to me) the much better deal out of all of them so far...just pisses me off that they didnt have a built in tuner in them. And at a lot of these prices, it makes more sense to go with something different. I got AJ STL Tonality on sale and loved it for the price and liked that it included the Revenant Pedal. I also have Bias FX2 which came fully loaded and included the BIAS Pedal plugin for like $150 total? And that gives you pretty much anything you will ever need and includes guitar match. So...I don't know. I agree with you, they need to shake things up already.

      They all have different voices and it's always nice to have options. I love having something like Plini's (black amp) panned right and the Nameless or NTS on the left making for a cool blend; add Darkglass for bass or Parallax and you have one hell of a sound.
      Nameless, NTS and Omega sound different from one another and so does Plini, Nolly and Abasi. Just different flavors, and honestly having this many high quality options wasn't always a thing in the plug in world.

      Amp modeler with ten's of thousands of dollars worth of amps, cabs, and effects. Also, the routing options which means more pedals/cables for a less manageable pedal board. So even more money.
      $1400 is a steal, even compared to it's direct competition. The $2000+ axe fx 3.
      Tube amps are cool, expensive, and less useful. But, are very easily integrated into a modeler studio set up or floor modeler rig.
      Re-amping exists for a reason.

    Loved comparison comment to the Fryette/VHT. I have been GAS'ing for an Ultra Lead but don't have room for one alongside the IIC+ and Wizard MC that I already have. But I'll have a Quad Cortex soon and I look forward to trying this sim in it to see if it can satisfy this craving. A guy who I was trying to convince to sell me one of his 3 Wizard MTLs, who is also a huge Ultra Lead fan, just ordered the real version of this amp because of its expected comparability to these other amps, and it definitely seems to be in the same ballpark. Great vid. Thanks.

    This is the review I’ve been waiting for on this plugin. Since I haven’t pulled the trigger on either of the fortin suites, seeing this made my decision even harder. I’m also bouncing back and fourth between neural and stl tones Will Putney with its inclusion of a bass amp. I’m not a 7 or 8 string guy. My playing falls between AIC and pantera. What would be your suggestion? Also, Did I hear some Dream Theater in your demo? Really enjoy these in depth reviews. Keep it up!

      Out of all the Neural stuff, Nolly casts the widest net but at a price. NTS is very versatile if you're just looking for dry tones. I can't say much about the STL stuff as I've never evaluated them extensively, but the hour or so I last spent with them didn't leave me too impressed.

  • @seventhsealhere

    I’d like to see a Rock pack purely focused on amps rather than a particular artist. Like Archetype Friedman, Marshall or even Fender where they could pick 3 or 4 amps and sell that as a pack for diversity. There is plenty of room there to work with. I think that would sell like hot cakes. To be honest, I think that is why they decided to try to go HW. But, I think their profit margin is better to stick to SW plugins. Between Helix, Fractal and Kemper they have their work cutout to make it through the HW route. I think I would continue to focus on the SW route and compete on the high end with UA and others. My 2 cents. Either way, I consider Neural DSP still to be the best on the SW plugin modeling front. I own Nolly and absolutely love it. Awesome product and I agree, the most versatile and best value they offer. Great video man! 👍

  • @poulwinther
    @poulwinther 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Completely agree - but I already see crucial points missing (to me) in the Quad Cortex. Even in a DSP unit that powerful they make the standard mistake of having just a single stereo effect for delay (ping pong) and then implementing it as another "delay mode". You want your vintage tape delay as a big stereo soundscape? Too bad - you must chose between tape or ping pong like in some cheap pedal! Seriously, why NDSP??
    Oh, and one more thing: After your recommendation for the Blades plugin I can't see ever needing anything else for chug tones anyway. That plugin is just brilliant! Thanks a lot for the recommendation.

    The EQD plumes (at least in the real world) does both symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping depending on the mode, with the middle mode removing the clipping section from the circuit entirely.
    I own one but haven’t had the chance to play it through a high gain amp yet so I can’t speak to why they might include it here...

    I have to say, while I love the clarity and power of Neural stuff, you nail it on the head in concluding this vid. As a primarily plugin guy, I have almost no justification buying hardware of that pricetag. The cynic in me says that within three years they will have done a Quad v2, or some kinda Apple approach where you can only load a few of the "new amazing 2025 we never had accuracy like this before" amp blocks etc. But if you buy the v2 you can double the size of the virtual rig, yada yada. Take that and compare it to a bangin' laptop. They just need to update the plugin and you get that same power for very little to no price overhead compared to getting a new hardware modeler. Ugh. It's kind of a catch33 trying to win at the modeling space because of the immensity of tech and the options.
    I guess in Neural's defense, they put out a bunch of plugins and then pitch the hardware and see who buys which.
    Either way it's a good time to be a guitarist lol.
    Ps: IMO, To help condense their plugins, Neural could think about doing a Fortan bundle or something. I see very little point to getting Nameless and NTS. Not unless both plugs were cut 50% off haha. This way you can grab one plugin and have both heads. I mean they sound so similar anyway, why not make one plug instead of two?
    The Archetype stuff I am a little more understanding of because you get quite a lot with each plug. I'll quit now before I rabbit hole this to death and end up selling one of my old basses or something to get all the Neural stuff I don't already have lol.
    Cheers

  • @woocifer
    @woocifer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Plague Scythe Studios hey dude, I appreciate the videos and the recommendations...here's a question: I'm not bothering with the Quad...I have a 20% discount til the end of March and I am looking at possibly pulling the trigger. My initial idea was getting an NTS for a really good heavy distortion(my prefs: Demanufacture, Far Beyond Driven, Homo Sum - Decapitated, Saligia - Origin, Eaten - Blood Bath). I tried the Plini plugin and it was really nice... but not sure if I could get those tones out of it. I use a lot of EZ Mix effects when I do more experimental things, but what you're saying here kinda bugs me and makes me think about a purchase...
    I've been told the Omega is the best out of all of them for metal tones. Any recommendations on what to do? Should I take the 20% chance and get the NTS and wreak havoc, or should I get away with a 20% slice off of a full suite like the Nolly or Plini? I am not a fan of Tosin's so I doubt I'd ever use his...but maybe you have a deeper insight in the quality of it, who knows...
    Any info would be helpful. Thanks dude!

After trying every amp sim under the sun over the years, Poulin, Amplitube 5, STL, Mercuriall...(you name, I have tested it) I found my main guitar tone with this amp sim. Say what you will about it. It sounds good, but it didn't really grab me past 2 or 3 of the tones.
    The Quad Cortex has some serious potential, but a massive red flag went up for me when you look at the pic of the software that you can put on your computer or phone to control the device. They have their IIC+ model shown and there's not "Lead Drive" control. Hell, even Line 6 got that right. It led me to wonder just how deep, if at all, can one go with modifying the amp sims. That, it the somewhat unspoken ace in the hole of Fractal. I can literally mod the amp sim in real time and have massive amounts of variants to play with and hone in on my ideal tone. Many years ago, Cliff mentioned the ability to basically build a custom amp from the ground up in the Axe FX, but that has yet to materialize and I now think it never will sadly. As a player who has very rarely been satisfied with a straight up, off the shelf amp, being able to delve deeper without having the spend hundreds of dollars on different tubes or thousands of dollars on questionable mods is a godsend.
    What really depresses me is that I think the same, relatively conservative type of groupthink that pervades guitar gear has hamstrung digital. Why are we not seeing more amp sims that are in-house/from the ground up designs?

    • @colelewis9940
      @colelewis9940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To your question of why do we not see more companies with amp sims that are their own design. Some companies are not people who build amps but build ways to copy amps. Line 6 and fractal do build their own sounds sometimes. Kemper is completely a copy machine. Then there is the question of what is popular. One modeler on the market that is completely original is the ISP Theta Pro, and look how popular that is. What people want is an amp modeler with all the amp models they're familiar with. A 6505 model, a rectifier model, a fender model, etc. I do agree though it would be nice to see more attempts at sounds that could only have been created in an amp modeler. Big bottom from line 6 was always a good example of that. And in the axe fx which i use there are a bunch of unique to axe fx amp models, obviously which are great.

    I understand your conclusion, but i'm not sure i agree. IMO I DO agree that it doesn't make sense to buy both. If you don't care about throwing money around more power to you. I just don't think that there are all these people buying every single amp release from NDSP. Sure, there are plenty of reviewers on TH-cam who get every new release, but I don't think you can compare them to the general market. I can only speak for myself in this instance, but as someone who does everything digitally I see absolutely no reason to own more than one of their plugins. You are absolutely right that all you really need is a single Archetype suite. I own the Nolly and I see no reason to own anything else when you get as much versatility as you do with it. Even the NTS should be able to get you every kind of tone you'd like (by which i mean clean, crunch, etc) even if it's not "perfect". And again i'm not sure it's generally fair to compare the people who are real "fan boys" or gear nerds who just have to own every single release. If you're really into deep diving and having a million tonal options than you're going to buy everything regardless. So yeah I 100% believe they are doing a good job servicing both sides of the market and any overlap in between with people buying hardware and software are probably a small minority.

    • @dcp10200
      @dcp10200 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly NTS is the perfect sim IMO, the cleans are as clean as you'll ever want out of an amp, the crunch sound has a really cool low end fuzz to it without the hexdrive or Grind pedal engaged and can get straight up vicious with them, and the High gain channel is basically the perfect balance between modern and vintage tones and the independent control over the low end and high end gain really helps with dialing in tones weather you want a more grindy, top end forward prog tone, or just complete brutality with the girth knob cranked up.

    I had already my doubts about this new plugin once I had the Nameless, the Plini, the Nolly and the Abasi in my arsenal. I was hoping to find an option better than the Nameless for 6 strings hard rock tones with EQ Delay and Reverb not available in the Nameless but ...by surprise I found only the EQ ...no delay and reverb so that for a lead tone I should always use the Plini FX in series. This doesn’t make sense ...I’’stick with the Nameless + Plini and I won’t buy the Omega. I’ve somehow the sensation that with all that hype around Neural is now throwing out products that do not cover the 100% of customers expectations but simply a piece and bite of something apparently new. For the rest I totally agree with your final comments ...by the way I didn’t subscribe for he Quad Cortex...I’ll give it a new look by mid 2021 when all the excitement will cool down a bit.

    I think I've said on here that I preordered the Quad Cortex. I'm also coming from being a nameless user mainly. I enjoy the nameless a bunch, but it's also a touch lacking in certain areas. I downloaded the trial for this one out of curiosity and not having played through the archetypes. Honestly, in terms of out of the box tones, I thought this plugin absolutely destroyed the nameless for metal tones. You can dial the nameless in pretty well, but the omega just comes out sounding great. In terms of cleans, I agree. The full clean on this thing has this weird saturation going on, and kind of grates on the 4-8k range in my ears. There IS that 'low-gain grit" setting that I liked, and it had kind of a desolate, tragic, Ihsahn sort of black metal sound and I dug it, but there's not a useable clean.
    If I wasn't on the Quad Cortex waiting list, I'd probably have already bought this plugin, even though I'm only a few days into my trial. It's not hard to use a different plugin for a clean. Hell, I play a 6505+ IRL, so I'd need to use a different amp for a good clean anyway (which is why I'd be eyeing a Roland JC 120 if I weren't switching to modelling).
    A lot of people are complaining about the lack of pedals that came with the archetype lines, and I can see why. I throw bias FX on when I need effects, but with the availability of effects in certain plugins, I can see the disappointment. I really think that Neural should start thinking about a unified UI, where you can select heads, cabinets, pedals, EQs, etc from the products that you already own. I know they're still new at this, so it may or may not be on their radar.
    Ultimately, for a good out of the box metal tone, I'd highly recommend this to pretty much anyone, but that's pretty much all you're gonna get with it.
    Great review Ryan. Thanks as always.

    I think it'd be pretty sweet if NDSP had a coherent 'hub' plugin model where say $100 for initial purchase to get Nameless+the NDSP Hub (first offering) then each new release was dlc to be added in the hub (or if getting in later, you buy whichever release you want and get the NDSP Hub included). They'd probably save a bunch of cash building modular parts onto a hub that's updated rather than building whole new plugins each time and thus be able to offer 'dlc' at a lower price point.
    It's getting to be like streaming services now where to watch everything you need to subscribe to a million services which starts defeating the whole purpose. That's absolutely where Line 6 have it right, at least in how they set up the Helix Native model (modelling quality aside)

    Today there're a few things unspoken. Hardware still sell cause, I think, deliberately introduced limitations on plug in land. I come from using the old digitech 1101 still today... why you may ask? Because it sounds good, takes irs, is an interface... but the main reason: 1 rack space, delay spillover, seamless program changes, transparent for integration with an existing gig or using them both with the internal preamps. Now... I've seen many great plugins, but most of them LACK effects spillover, bank and program changes. A computer power go beyond any hardware platform, so my guess is you wouldn't need "scenes" for compensating for lag that still today exists on flagship processors, and I thought would be an issue long time corrected for 2020. My old 1101 can do it, so I dont see why not a computer. If plugins are better than hardware processors then WHY they wouldn't implement something so basic for live use? That forces me to use hardware modelers, when would be easier and better take a midi pedalboard and a laptop to PA on any gig. I know there are a few, like amplitube and bias that have program changes implemented, but no spillover. Those 2 are exceptions on an environment where bank and program changes , spillover, decent midi control and a reliable, streamlined live mode for live applications should be standard. That will kill hardware processors for most of us, maybe with the exception of real amp users or complex routing needs.

    Not with you this time. I own several amp sims including stuff from NeuralDSP (Fortin NTS) and Helix Native (being a Helix LT player in my band). But the tone you get from this specific plugin isn't there with the products I already own. And I think that 100$ are a real bargain for it offers - almost 100% realistic sound in a plugin.
    I know guitarists that have up to 10 amp heads at home. Is it necessary? Surely not! ;-)

      Thank you for this Great in-depth video very detailed and rich informative i have subscribed. I really like your honest. Personally i have preordered the quad cortex, and sold my other hardware modeler, they were great and all, but i after i have listened and watched alot of neural dsp video, and I tr. felt i need to go all in on that neural dsp route, i have purchased an audio interface. Purchased The plini because i love the combination of amps and effects and especially the clean tones. I dont think at this point i will purchase more plugins until i know what comes with the quad cortex software wise and which possibilities when it will be released.
      I Rather dig in the tones, amp, cab, IR options on the plini.

    Market is fairly saturated, trending to very saturated. Some of these products (specially hardware ones) will depreciate rapidly. Only one I've seen that doesn't seem to give is the ax8. People still asking and getting 1k plus for that thing lol

    Yeah I never really got why they went down the artist suite route to begin with unless it has something to do with the programming. Why have a pedal emulation tied to a specific bundle with far better value than your original releases when you could have just made it standalone? Neural's reputation stems from their quality, not the fact that they do artist bundles.
    The other thing is software markets seem to converge on two products: the free addition with a high skill ceiling, and the paid but efficient handholding option. Amp sims are going the same way. I bought Nolly simply because I knew the presets sounded good and I could focus on writing not tone chasing.

    I don't know what to think of this recent development in amp sims, meaning the "name dropping." It kinda bss ppl into thinking they play a [insert amp name], for a fraction of the original's price of course, but in reality they are not playing the thing. On the other hand, if you wanna bs yourself into thinking you play the thing without having to get the actual thing, there you go... xD
    However, to conclude this admittedly in places erratic comment somehow: I don't really know what to think of this... ^^
    Edit: Meanwhile I came across an amp sim ad from another TH-camr where the top comment was like: "...we'll get to play a [insert expensive amp name] without spending a few k." ...and the BS has already worked its magic. ;)
