- On September 15th, 1952 an American formation of F-84 Thunderjet fighter-bombers is flying towards the Yalu River, near the East China Sea, on the border between China and North Korea.
Escorting them is a flight of F-86 Sabres from the 336th Fighter Squadron, spear-headed by flight leader, and future jet ace Captain James Robinson Risner. When they encounter MiG-15s Risner chases the pilot all the way to China and then tried to rescue his wingman by pushing his stricken F-86 to safety.

Great video as always. I’ve always loved your designs for the videos. I will however mention that you forgot one detail about Logan. Once he hit the water the two different rescue craft a float plane and a helicopter apparently were having an argument over who would get to rescue him. The helicopter crew won the argument and apparently attempted to use their rotor wash to inflate his parachute and try and essentially push him towards the island. This is unfortunately what resulted in him getting tangled in his parachute lines and the resulting in his drowning.

Man.. hearing how after all that Logan got caught in his parachute and drowned a tragic death, never getting so see his friend as he said, is heartbreaking

This whole idea of theirs was an incredibly immature maneuver. Why chase down 1 damaged MiG back to his base when they were tasked with defending the F-84s from currently 3 undamaged MiGs? Kind of a dick and cowardly move because they only did it for the sake of glory getting a kill, not to complete the mission objective. If it was a German pilot from WW2 he would have saluted the MiG pilot after pulling up aside him.

I’ve seen this same story on History Channel’s 360 Dogfights show, and it’s a lot more suspenseful when the American pilot (James Risner) who flew on that mission tells his side of the story.

Theres something so magical about aerial combat, especially ww1,2 and Korea.
The absolute skill and experience of many pilots is for sure an awe-inspiring thought. Just imagine being a French pilot during ww1 and you see that infamous red plane. Pilots knew who aces were when they saw them.

Now imagine that a Russian pilot who hears bomb explosions at his airfield, a combat alarm sounds, a siren howls, you jump into your I-15 or I-16, which has no ammunition, since the attack is sudden and the planes are understaffed, and You have half the fuel in your tanks. You take off not along the runway, which no longer exists, but across the field, you take off alone, and there are several dozen enemy bombers and fighters above the airfield. You can’t shoot, you won’t be able to fly for long either, and all you can do is ram with a 100% probability of death in order to somehow harm the enemy, to prevent him from doing his dirty deed! And they went to ram. This is exactly how June 22, 1941 began for many Soviet pilots.
My only query would be, "why chase a damaged enemy in the first place?" If the Sabres' mission was to escort and protect the bombers, putting one of their interceptors out of the battle should have been enough. In which case, none of the loss which followed would have happened...
It's a good point. Can you imagine how many bombers were shoot down while they were going into chinese territory? Wasn't a good idea. But in the heat of moment it could made any sense to them. It's easy to us judge the action now.
Considering how good the enemy pilot was, imagine if he survived and lived another day... he would have wrecked havoc on the American lines.
Exactly my question.. ...why risk your own plane and also that of a friend's over a damaged enemy plane?
He was a glory hunter only caring about kill marks going for an easy target. Lack of honor and chivalry.
His actions left the fighter bombers without escort, he sent 2 fighters to chase 3 enemies and caused the death of his wingman disobeying orders both on his mission objectives and on international borders limitations.
His promotion and praise were a PR stun and because he was a good fighter pilot. But objectively he should have been demoted and court martialed.

He chased the mig15 for too long, he wanted the plane down, he got what he wanted but he lost his friend. Was it worth it? I doubt it. He got too greedy.

I remember seeing this story on Dogfights, and if I remember correctly they had said that the rescue helicopters sent after Logan did some kind of maneuver that went wrong (I think they tried using their rotor wash to fill up Logan's parachute to blow him to shore), which is what ended up tangling him in his parachute and killing him.
No maneuver, the 2 we're fighting over who was going to rescue him and caused the death... Both crews were court martialed!

I felt bad every time I saw that part on Dogfights.
Had he not broken the rules of engagement, his friend might have survived the war. Cause and effect.
As a young Marine in the late 80's early 90's I had the honor of being inside the buildings on Kadena Airbase in Okinawa that has his name on it..this brought tears to my eyes, we knew we were fighting the Russians and didn't do what was right.......much love and respect to these warriors!

So two fighters, chased a damaged and evading fighter leaving the bombers and their other colleagues. With the cost of one of their own lives, and two aircraft…. Not sure how much sense this makes, sadly
Glad I'm not the only one thinking this. Abandoning your escort mission to zealously chase a damaged enemy fighter that no longer posed a threat to the bombers you were tasked with protecting seems like the height of ego driven stupidity.
Also chasing it into forbidden territory which could have had terrible consequences on an international level

Yes I knew that I had the right story. The history channel episode of dogfights really captures Risner's emotion though when talking about losing Joey Logan. It was heart breaking to listen to and honestly a heart breaking to watch this knowing what was going to happen and thinking back on that interview.

Risner’s actions caused the death of his wingman, I dare say a prime emotion coming out is guilt.
Two pilots could have lived if one pilot didn`t went out of his way to chase a damaged mig. What a tale. Nice animations though.
The reason that pilot died was because the people who were supposed to rescue him were arguing about whose turn it was. The helicopter pilot won the argument against the float plane pilot. The helicopter pilots attempted to rescue the pilot by basically blowing him to the island but that helped his parachute fill up with water and then with him tangled in it he drowned. Plus that aircraft wasn’t damaged it was still a threat.

I really need to also say that that Russian Pilot has to be honered a bit. With all the Manoveurs and "running" away from 2 enemy Jets is really something astonishing.
So basically on a escort mission, the flight lead decided to take 2 planes to chase down a damaged retreating plane. Talking about thirst for blood...
Honestly it's sad that after such extreme maneuvers the chinese guy couldn't get away. And flying between the hangars like that is just incredible, like from some movie.
Russian pilots fighting in Korea was kept a well kept secret and wasn’t revealed until years after the war was over
One of my Dad's cousins was a Russian linguist. He spent the Korean war on a small island off the coast of North Korea. His job was to monitor the enemy air/ground radio frequencies. When he heard the enemy lifting off he would call the USAF and tell them the Russians were on the way. The Russians never figured out how the USAF was always waiting for them. He couldn't talk about this for a couple of decades. The politicians didn't want people to know that the Russians were involved in actual fighting.
I.ve heard this told a few times in different ways and I have never understood it. Wasn't the mission to escort the bombers? The guy ditches the bombers with his wingman seemingly right off the bat because he got one piece of one attacking mig. He then chases deep into forbidden areas with AAA and gets his wing man killed while bombers are getting blasted back at the mission. That got him a promotion? Seems like a pride move as the pilot in the damaged mig was out of their class as well.

His wingman died because of the rescue teams failing at their job not chasing after the mig that was still a threat. Plus numerous pilots even in the most recent battles have done this it was only him and his wingman the rest of the flight could protect the bombers.
I remember when this channel was 2D and I was super impressed. I'm still blown away every single video.
Kind of a bad call to chase the mig to China to secure the victory I think. He should've stayed with his flight, to clean up the remaining migs and protect the f84s. Instead he flew into China, overextended and risked himself and his wingman. Yes he secured the victory but at what cost? A wingman and 2 sabers?
Amazingly animated, and the push maneuver was impressive I think though following the mig was a bad idea from the moment he sent 2 of his wing to chase the 3 other migs.

I hate to say this and my intentions are not meant to be negative but I can’t help but feel like if he had given up that bloody long chase to the literal end and death at the enemy air base then perhaps, just perhaps he may have not passed away in such a tragic and unexpected circumstance. His pursuit after all wasn’t sanctioned or necessary and that solemn ending feels somewhat like what some may describe as “Karma or Eye for an Eye” type of deal and inevitably, both men’s fates that same adrenaline fueled day. Wonderful tale and recounting of these men’s deeds but overall a tragedy. Rest In Peace to those who perished.
I agree. His rash actions cost two lives that day. The Soviet pilot already disengaged and left, and so posed no danger to the bombers. After seeing each other in the valley, they should have waved at each other and parted ways. Then, you would have an American and a Russian who can both go home to share their fascinating encounter.
That Mig pilot put up a determined fight, displaying skill at his craft and perseverence in his character; I personally feel he deserved to make it out alive. It is quite tragic indeed.

I honestly feel bad for the Russian pilot. The maneuvers were amazing and executed with such bravery. Chasing him even though he wasn't a threat whatsoever is the opposite of heroic to me. Even going so far as to disobey orders in order to shoot down a damaged plane is just ignorant

You intervened in a civil war to back your puppet dictator, Syngman Rhee in South Korea; you bombed North Korea so heavily that they are still digging up bombs today; you repeatedly encroached into sovereign Chinese territory despite a clear warning against it by the latter, and without a former declaration of war no less. You threatened nuclear war at every turn, which would have actually came into fruition, had it not been for the fact that both North Korea and China were under the Soviet nuclear umbrella.

The F-86 Sabre is one of my favorite fighter jets and to hear this story increases how much I love them. I have even went to an aircraft museum and stood beside an Avro Lancaster and the F-86 Sabre without even knowing they were there. Both of these planes are now in my top 5 favorite planes.

@@hadescerbex9984 damn, he isn’t the only guy who can damage the bombers though. The 3 migs he left his 2 other pilots to fight had a high chance of taking out the f-86s and going after the bombers. Let alone the fact that there were probably even more migs already destroying the f-84s.

Admittedly, chasing that MiG down transitions from just doing your job to straight murder. The MiG was already out of the fight and yet these two 86s pursued him. With a MiG pilot that so profoundly maneuvered to save his own life, after he was a non-factor for the bombers, it's more heartbreaking to see the 86s continue to hunt his ass into the ground.
It's like watching a fight, and one guy gets knocked out. And then the other guy gets down and proceeds to beat the unconscious man to a pulp.

It's always happened. It will happen. When you hunt a target you shoot to kill that target. Killing an enemy pilot is worth more than just shooting down his aircraft. Everyone will point out its murder. That's war. The sound of it the bomber's were safe at that point. As the remaining migs pulled out and in doing so he felt it was safe enough to give chase. Plenty of other nationalities of pilots of have done it. If you want a larger example go to world war two. Plenty of Russian and German pilots both would chase each other into the dirt. This is not an uncommon example. But the valor told afterwards and piloting skills are.

I mean he lost his friend by relentlessly chasing a jet that stopped fighting for no reason at all, leaving the bombers unprotected.
He was effectively a surrendered party on the retreat displaying surprising solidarity and his death is tragic and although it was not Logan’s kill it does give a feeling of justification for his own death as bad as it may sound. What Risner did may not be a war crime but where kills are not immoral in war he crossed the boundaries quite literally of what should be an aerial victory and plain murder imho.

Wow. As a pilot, (not a fighter pilot) I have always wondered about pushing another jet along when I hear about times when someone lost an engine or something. I always wondered if it would work, and yep. Too bad it didn't work out in the very end, but still, amazing maneuver.
James Robinson "Robbie" Risner was a Brigadier General, a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, and a senior leader among U.S. prisoners of war during the Vietnam War.
During the Vietnam War, Risner was a double recipient of the Air Force Cross, the second-highest military decoration for valour that can be awarded to a member of the United States Air Force, awarded the first for valour in aerial combat and the second for gallantry as a prisoner of war of the North Vietnamese for more than seven years. He was the first living recipient of the medal.
Risner became an ace in the Korean War and commanded a squadron of F-105 Thunderchiefs in the first missions of Operation Rolling Thunder in 1965. He flew a combined 163 combat missions, was shot down twice, and was credited with destroying eight MiG-15s. Risner retired as a brigadier general in 1976.
At his death, Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark A. Welsh III observed: "Brig. Gen. James Robinson "Robbie" Risner was part of that legendary group who served in three wars, built an Air Force, and gave us an enduring example of courage and mission success... Today's Airmen know we stand on the shoulders of giants. One of 'em is 9 feet tall... and headed west in full afterburner."
Paused the video at a little over 7 minutes to say, this totally reminds me of the story of the F4 Phantom pilots who did the same thing, in fact, I thought they were the first, but this predates that event. The Phantom story was a bit more perilous as I recall, with the pushing pilot actually using his own windscreen. Sometimes we in the other armed forces make fun of our Air Force brethren for having it easy, but they are brave as hell in their own right.
Blessings upon all troops in a righteous cause, from whatever nation. Good wishes to the forces of Ukraine, fighting hard to repel an invader. They are already more successful than many other European nations were in WWII vs the invading Blitzkrieg. Some nations in those circumstances lasted only hours or weeks. Brave Ukrainians have withstood an assault for over 130 days at this point, more than 4 months. Slava Ukraini.
And a moment of silence for former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, who was a staunch ally to the US, and was willing to stand against the "salami slicing" of territory by the CCP. Still waiting to hear more on that story, so no further comment, though I can't hep but wonder if the CCP was involved. I spent 2 years in Japan, they are a peace loving people, and violence shocks/offends them. My condolences to the Japanese people.

Good luck with the Ukranian statement, Expect the land taken by Russia(20% of Ukraine by land mass of Ukraine btw) to never be returned. Also, by 130 days if you mean Ukraine isn't in its 5th mobilization wave then it would be fine, but sadly, it is in the 5th mobilization wave, and civilians are giving 10 days training before being sent to the frontlines. If you think of this as Russian propoganda, then ask a bunch of Returned foreign troops, including the best sniper in the world, who probably spent only a few nanoseconds in combat before leaving(when his unit was shelled). The Ukranians are brave, but their government is anything but it. They should sue for peace, before more land is irreversibly snatched from them.
The real way to win a war is by not underestimating your enemies, which all news outlets constantly show footage of the Russians. The same happens on the Ukranian side too, for example, a few Ukranian troops sold a "Donated" French Howitzer for $124,000 each while the cost of it is $70million.

The fact that F-86s chased a damaged and retreating plane, and then getting a promotion is absolutely disgusting. He also put the Bomber squadron in danger and got his wingman down.
If you think this is justified or he deserves the award then i think you must rethink twice.

I'm consfused I agree he put his team in needless danger but an enemy is any enemy unless they bail and parachute out. An injured plane is only temporarily out of the fight.
I do wonder what would happen if they did not chase the Soviet pilot just to kill him. Judging from the narration, the enemy pilot has skill, and if he lived another day, he would have wrecked havoc on enemy lines, and probably become a national hero of the Soviet Union if they weren't keeping it a secret.
I guess that's why they chased him all the way. They knew he was a good pilot, and they can't let him get away with his life.
It kinda sounds like he unnecessarily chased down a plane back into China for the purpose of fame and glory and got his wingman killed

Thank you for sharing these individual acts that demonstrate perseverance, dedication, commitment, patriotism, respect, honor, bravery, discipline, strength, and heroism along with more attributes than there are words to assign to those involved with these individual episodic structured videos...To learn something at my age, a man who has studied nearly every battle, conflict, and war ...has experienced the carnage personally...Yet my interest was embedded in me as a child...living near and or on military bases will do that I guess...For me, focus primarily involves Americans but also those who shaped civilization...I've taken deep dives into the large decisive battles and at times the smaller or even individual ones...yet rarely know about the ones you primarily focus on. Even at my age...the mid to late 50s, I am never unimpressed with your hard work and the gift that you have...Seldom do you present something I know about or have studied....there are millions of individual battles that occurred on a daily basis throughout history....and your channel provides a window into those events...I learn something new 98% of the time...and that is a gift, sir...I hope you realize that..., not the part about what I know or do not but the fact and manner of doing what you do...you have a gift...
More impressive is the manner of your presentation. Perfect, spot-on script to accompany truly remarkable graphics ... recreating these events...Not skimping on the smallest detail either such as in this video the jet's shadows...or even more discreet nuances...overlayed with the perfect spot on script ...and more importantly, is the delivery....Using my raspy American, Southern voice may work with a wild west or unique events but would never work with these videos....then there is the seamless reading of the script, the perfect moments to raise the volume, alter the tone, the infliction, increase your cadence reaching a moment of emphasis....often followed by a perfect pause...not a wasted word...not a second too soon or too late to begin or to end these stories...the perfect voice, enunciation and projecting... I have zero clue about these matters far as the creation of and or the art of storytelling but I must say, you have it perfected...of the numerous content creators and presentations I view... there are none better than what you provide for us...I know it is a lot of work...my son has a successful channel himself with over 1M subscribers...He works at times for 30-40hours to produce an 8-10 min video & he is focused on a specific PC game....not history...I would be interested to know what program you use to create your graphics ...not that I could ever approach your level nor do I or will I have any type of "content for the masses"....but for personal projects or local or more specifically I have ideas about my business and utilizing this type of approach (executive security or once known as "PMCs") ....Anycase. just wanted to let you know that many people, 10s of 1000s appreciate your hard work....it is also important to emphasize these events, to teach, show, and present events based on facts and not some political agenda...The World is self-destructing unlike I've ever witnessed or could imagine in my many years...Perhaps one day, an entity would approach you about categorizing all your creations and putting them in a chronological order to be used as adjuncts to learning about history....as it was and not as the...well...as many demands every creation be represented of these days...frustratingly, history was and is history...who was involved is who was involved...to interject others is wrong and I am glad and thankful you remain as historically accurate as you can...FANTASTIC JOB...

I would like to a see a video about Witold Pilecki, a polish soldier who fought in the polish-soviet war, the defense of Poland and then he joined the polish resistance. Co-founding the Secret Polish Army himself. In 1940 he volunteered to allow himself to be captured by the occupying Germans in order to infiltrate auschwitz concentration camp. At auschwitz Pilecki organized a resistance movement that eventually included hundreds of inmates, and he secretly drew up reports detailing the German atrocities at the camp, which we’re smuggled out to Home Army headquarters and shared with the western allies. After escaping from auschwitz, Pilecki fought in the Warsaw Uprising of August-October 1944. Following it’s suppression, he was interned at a German pow camp. After the communist takeover of Poland he remained loyal to the London-based Polish-Government-In-Exile. In 1945 he returned to Poland to report to the government-in-exile on the situation in Poland. Before returning, Pilecki wrote Witold’s Report about his experiences In auschwitz, anticipating that he might be killed by Poland’s new communist authorities. In 1947 he was arrested by the secret police on charges of working for “Foreign Imperialism” and after being subject to torture and a show trial, was executed in 1948.
This is a story that I believe should be told, it really shows how fierce Poland was even after it’s fall, detailing about polish life during WW2, this story was also inconveniently remained for several decades, That’s all

So he broke off from objective, to chase down a bandit that was already disengaging just for the sake of the pride of shooting down an enemy plane? And it cost his wingman's life? Why was this rewarded? No doubt he's a good pilot but if you ask me there's no way in hell anyone should be promoted for glory hunting like that. All he really seemed to do was lead to two people dying that really didn't need to
@@pancho7647 they were escorting a bomber formation, meaning they were tasked with driving away any potential attackers. The damaged MiG-15 was already disengaging, so the correct course of action would be to stay with the formation in case of further attack.

Wonder who the enemy pilot was? The enemy pilot seemed very skilled / experienced, until battle damage inflicted on the MIG caused his demise.

Risner was a pilot of incredible skill, but in chasing the Lone MIG, he had made a foolish decision on 2x counts.
He used 2/4 aircraft to chase one single vulnerable MIG that was leaving the combat area. This was an act of gloryhunting instead of what is best for the team. By leaving the other 2x friendlies to chase 3x MIGs, he had put them in danger, as 1x of the MIGs could break off from the group to get behind one of the Americans.
Risner put himself and his wingman into danger by continuing to chase the enemy pilot into airspace where American pilots were not allowed to go, even as far as the enemy airbase itself. This is only more proof that his actions were entirely about seeking glory.
Risner could not have known that Logan would die that day, but if he had put the team before himself, then 2x great men would probably have lived that day; the Russian pilot of great skill, and Logan.
RIP Logan.
Would thumbs up this comment but it’s kinda messed up how you only mourn one of two highly skilled men with families and dreams/goals. RIP the Russian pilot desperately trying to land & exit the plane, the Americans should have gathered the enemy base reconnaissance and reported it back to higher ups to send actual bombers/fighter-bombers to deal with it safely and effectively. Logan’s life was simply wasted, serves him right.
@@jaysmechs2457 it was a Chinese Airbase they couldn’t just bomb it. That’s why the airspace they were flying in was prohibited. Also I don’t understand why people expect respect and honor in war. War is a horrible tragedy and to think there is kindness between enemies is foolish.
@@lordofstraw4323 that’s a good opinion but it doesn’t change mine. Their job was to escort the f104 strike fighters. They disobeyed orders most likely to go home with a kill and boost reputation, thus a life was lost in the process. I don’t care what your herd mentality makes you believe, this was a murder and possibly a war crime. Not sure if the Chinese were involved in the war, but even they had to shoot at the American pilots for them to f### off but no matter what, they wouldn’t let up for some reason I just don’t understand. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
