    Thanks for this video! I really appreciate the information very much. I just got a 5 gallon tank a few months ago and I needed to choose a gravel for the beta and Cory catfish. This helped a lot! I had a 40 gallon African cichlid tank yrs ago but had to give it away unfortunately because we moved. I want to replace it so bad lol. I miss it and the beautiful underwater life it surrounds you in.. so peaceful.. I'm starting to dip into aquaponics a bit because I'm a plant collector grower and I just find it so fascinating. I love everything about nature and the underwater life. Thanks again! Have a beautiful day!

      I'm definitely going to try lol. I have to replenish the bank account a little bit first lol.. We just bought our first house last yr and its been crazy getting settled in with everything happening out there right now. That being said, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for corner tanks so I can put one in my front foyer. I'm so ready to have aquariums again! I loved my African cichlids, they were/are so interesting. I would like some angel fish in another tank too.. my husband already knows when I'm on the go, there's nothing stopping me lol. Its definitely in the works. I had such a nice wood framed glass tank and I miss it dearly. Its really nice to meet you. I just bought your little adjustable 15w heater from Amazon and it works great! Thanks again for sharing!

      It's not necessary to cap Fluval Stratum, but if you do, we only recommend using sand! Gravel is more likely to break down soil substrates like Stratum prematurely.

    Here's my question with substrates: won't the plants eventually use up the nutrients in the special plant substrate, to where root tabs will be necessary? If so, then is there much of a benefit to planted substrate vs. sand+root tabs?

    I know this vid is 3yo, but it still begs the question:
    I bought eco-complete, because I wanted a planted tank. I did my plants, fair enough.
    Once I added corys, they lasted a while but eventually all lost their barbells and died out. This stuff is SHARP!
    Is there a plant-nutrient-rich, non-sharp, fine gravel/large-sand, out there?
    I'm trying for slow-release so I can keep it forever (understanding that I have to fert it eventually) that my sifters can still enjoy. Is that a thing?

    Is it true that white aquarium substrate increase ph and brown substrate decreases it? I hear so many options from aquarium shops that are confusing me. First I added coarse and mixed dark substrate and noticed the Corydora barrels wearing out as they are quite the digging type to get to the food that sank between the coarse gravel. Then the shop recommended that I use medium 2-3mm white grain gravel mixed with crushed pieces of shells. And the ph has been getting spiked every 3 days and killing some low ph fish such as Cardinal Tetras. It has a few river rocks that were used in a previous tank some years ago, as well as some aged driftwood. Now the shop says that white gravel increases the ph. First he sells me the product, then he says it is not good for the fish I have, now he says brown gravel is a better option. Heck! What does he think I am, made of money? Also, most gravels have quite a number of magnetic gravel. Could this also affect the fish? Any suggestions?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mick! The color of the substrate has nothing to do with its effect on pH. The white gravel you used was likely aragonite, which is known to raise pH, as do crushed pieces of shell. For Corydoras, always use a fine sand substrate - there are plenty of inert sand substrates available, in all colors! Be sure to read the product packaging, which will inform you of the substrate's impact on your aquarium water.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goldfish naturally spend a great deal of time mouthing the bottom of the tank as most members of the carp family would, that said, fine gravel is not a good choice as it is possible they could ingest some. Larger pea sized/courser sized gravel is better.

    The way i want to set up my tank is having the substrate in the middle a little bit higher than the rest. and i want to plant some kind of grass like moss in the middle. What substrate and moss would be best for this?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moss typically takes structure to grow on, an option would be java moss that grows on a piece of driftwood that you like the look/shape of, trim to adjust as it grows. Substrate option is wide open with this option as the driftwood is the anchor for the java moss. The tank would also benefit from low lighting and low maintenance with this approach, while also allowing you to predetermine the general look as it would be based on the driftwood you select.

    Can you use sand from the dessert or beach for freshwater tank

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Desert sand is likely ok if it is well rinsed before use, beach sand will likely have plenty of calcium carbonate content, as such it would be best suited for use with fish that prefer more calcium in the water and pH values above 7.4. Always necessary to rinse any sand well before use. To know the effect on water chemistry soaking a pound or two in R/O water for a few days and testing pH, alkalinity and calcium will provide some insight when comparing against tests of a sample of your source water that has not been exposed to the sand you are considering.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The question is relevant to the Rotala, the Java fern anchors to driftwood or rocks for example. Rotala being a stem plant with relatively delicate root structure would do best in a soil type substrate such as Fluval Stratum or a coarse sand.

      Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum, here is the link to the 4KG bag, be advised that it is available in 2,4 and 8 KG bags: www.fluvalaquatics.com/ca/product/12694-plant-and-shrimp-stratum/#.WedenI9Szcs

      Fluval Aquatics thanks . I have a 29 gallon . How many bags would I need of the 8kg ?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are guessing your aquarium is 30 X 12 inches at the base, given that an 8KG + 2KG should be the minimum what is needed. A few KG's extra would be better. Please look under the tech specs on fluvalaquatics.com for this item, you will notice some guidelines, here is the link for your convenience: www.fluvalaquatics.com/ca/product/12695-plant-and-shrimp-stratum/#.Wedo7o9Szcs

    Can I just simply place my hair grass on a substrate like sand ?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hair grass (dwarf species is Eleocharis parvula) can be planted in a sand substrate and does benefit from substrate fertilization, as most plants do.

    i want a South east Asian 10 gal tank, but i dont know so many fish and plants i can put there .
    Im thinking about a betta and harlequin rasboras.
    So if u now some good algea eaters than please say it, i will be very happy for that.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a 10 gallon, while not originating from S.E Asia, Otocinclus vestitus would be a great choice. You could try some ghost shrimp, they do originate from S.E Asia and should be large enough for a betta not to bother it.

    what would be best sub for catfish ??? plz reply sir

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are asking about corydoras catfish for example, we would recommend sand as they do rummage about with their barbels constantly, gravel will generally cause issues in feeding as well as for their barbels.

    • @fluval

      Thanks for letting us know, that is a very predatory wide mouthed catfish. While sand is fine for them so would smooth edged gravel from 4 to 6 mm in diameter be.

    Do I need a filter to have fluval Stratum in a 10 gallon tank?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not the stratum that obliges you to run a filter but rather the fish that you would keep.

      If you are asking if you can add other nutritive type substrates or additives before covering them with Fluval Stratum, yes you can.

    hi! im aware that im a little late to this video, but for my planted aquarium, could i use my sand substrate and then create a top layer of coarse gravel for my aquarium?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better late then never! Yes you can but do remember if you use a gravel cleaner for partial water changes you will eventually blend the two substrates.

      Fluval Aquatics hi thanks fir the advice do u think this is a good one BLACK AQUARIUM SUBSTRATE
      (20 KG BAG, THICKNESS: 1-3mm)

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like we mentioned, we prefer a minimum of 3mm, goldfish being carp do like to constantly rummage the bottom of the aquarium, this size may help prevent them from occasionally swallowing smaller pieces.

    can I use normal river sand in or I have to buy some special type of sand for planted aquarium

    • @fluval

      DIY center type playbox sand is usually safe but takes lots of rinsing.
