設楽ヶ原は、愛知県新城市にある織田軍が武田軍と戦った長篠設楽ヶ原の戦いの決戦の地。
長篠設楽ヶ原の戦いは、天正3年（1575年）、三河の設楽ヶ原を決戦地に長篠城を巡り、織田軍3万8千人と武田軍1万5千人の軍勢が戦った合戦である。
この合戦で織田信長は武田勝頼率いる武田軍を破っり、天下統一を大きく手繰り寄せた。
天正2年（1574年）武田勝頼は、駿河の高天神城を落城させ、武田家としての最大版図を築いた。
勝頼は天正3年（1575年）4月に三河へ侵攻し、５月には長篠城を包囲。
信長軍38,000は、5月18日に設楽原に着陣。
軍勢を敵から隠すように布陣させ防御陣を構築。
信長軍は鉄砲隊を主力に、三重の土塁に馬防柵を設けた当時としては異例の野戦築城だった。
一方、武田軍は、宿老の山県昌景・馬場信春・内藤昌秀らは撤退を進言。だが勝頼は決戦を決定した。
5月20日深夜、信長は家康の重臣酒井忠次に4,000名の別働隊を組織させ奇襲を命令。
別働隊は、長篠城包囲の要であった鳶ヶ巣山砦を後方より強襲し奇襲は成功。
5月21日早朝、設楽原では、武田軍が織田軍を攻撃。戦いは昼過ぎまで続いた。
織田軍に追撃された武田軍は壊滅的損害を受け、織田軍の勝利で合戦は終結した。

Shitara-gahara is the site of the decisive Battle of Nagashino Shitara-gahara, where the Oda Army fought the Takeda Army in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture.
The Battle of Nagashino Shitara-gahara was fought in 1575 between Oda's 38,000 men and Takeda's 15,000 men over Nagashino Castle at Shitara-gahara in Mikawa, the site of the decisive battle.
In this battle, Oda Nobunaga defeated Takeda's army led by Katsuyori Takeda, and brought about the unification of Japan.
In 1574, Katsuyori Takeda defeated the Takatenjin Castle in Suruga and established the largest Takeda clan in Japan.
Katsuyori invaded Mikawa in April 1575 and besieged Nagashino Castle in May.
Nobunaga's army of 38,000 troops arrived at Shitara-hara on May 18.
The army was deployed to hide from the enemy and build a defensive position.
Nobunaga's army, led by a battery of guns, built a three-tiered earthen mound with a horse-proof fence, an unprecedented field construction at that time.
On the other hand, Takeda's retainers, Masakage Yamagata, Nobuharu Baba, and Masahide Naito, advised retreat. Katsuyori, however, decided to fight a decisive battle.
Late at night on May 20, Nobunaga ordered Ieyasu's chief vassal, Sakai Tadatsugu, to organize a detachment of 4,000 troops to attack the castle by surprise.
The detachment attacked the Tobigasusu Fort, which was the key to the siege of Nagashino Castle, from the rear, and the surprise attack succeeded.
In the early morning of May 21, the Takeda forces attacked the Oda forces at Shitara-hara. The battle continued until late afternoon.
Oda's army pursued the Takeda forces, which suffered devastating losses, and the battle ended in victory for Oda.
