She deserves a historically correct movie. It doesn’t seem like her story needs embellished for “dramatic effect”.

_The Lady With a Wooden Leg_ seems appropriate. Would actually love to see an *accurate* movie or mini-series about her.

Instead if such movie was made they will ignore important events and embrace or embellish fictional ideas to push a social justice warrior agenda for liberalism. Even though her reality is remarkable enough as it stands historically.

Hollywood will embellish it, wether you like it or not, as it's in their DNA.

@@CrazyPalidin57 Boy, aren't you a special kind of ignorant... She was the ultimate Social Justice Warrior, fighting against fascism, hatred, bigotry, sexism, and the exact same kind of disdainful, arrogant self-superiority you exhibit with your smug, prissy little comment. She was a vigorous supporter of FDR, and Truman, both of whom understood that without working together and lifting each other up, instead of pitting people against each other and regressing to a hate-filled society was the way to advance. That's what comes from education. A greater grasp of the world. She would have had a field day with #conservitard idiots like you... She did have a field day with the Nazis who preceded you, and just like them, you're a stain on America, and your kind are being relegated to the dustbin of history where you belong. You're neither wealthy enough, nor connected enough to benefit from the policies of taking wealth and giving it to the already wealthy that the #conservitards are implementing, so the only thing left is to make you a tool for their agenda. And they've succeeded. There is really only one reason to support the #conservitards at this juncture, and it’s very easy to see. They reflect the hate in your heart, the disgust you have for people of color, your fear and hostility toward outsiders, your toxic misogyny, your ignorant bigotry, and your overblown sense of self‒supremacy. And they utilize this pathetic arrogance of yours to fleece the nation for their own benefit. And you’re complicit. How anti-American of you to find the concept of promoting justice in society to be a negative thing. You are the exact thing Ms. Hall fought against in the war.
      Live with that.

I can see how she was nearly forgotten; she did what spies were supposed to do: keep a low profile. She had a true heart, wanting to do good, instead of wanting fame. What a great story.

According to the Judith Pearson bio, Wolves at the Door, Virginia was not exactly "denied employment with the U.S. Government."
She took the foreign service exam while employed by the U.S. State Dept. in Turkey--where she also shot herself in the leg--, but was transferred & her answer sheet was lost in the mails. In Poland, she ordered another exam but did not receive the answer sheet before she was transferred again.

I lived in Holland in the early to mid 1980's. Most of the generation who lived through and survived the war are gone now. I feel privileged to have heard first-hand accounts from some of those who lived through it, whether as normal civilians or members of the resistance. I noticed that even after 40+ years, many resistance fights, particularly, didn't like talking about their participation. I believe that for every Virginia Hall, or Anne Frank, there are dozens, hundreds even, of similar stories of heroism forever lost to history simply because of the horror, or humility of those who fought back. Whenever I think I have it hard or difficult in life, I only have to think of some of the things I've heard about during that grim time in history, and I realize I really don't have things so hard after all. Thank God for their sacrifices and courage! Thank you History Guy for reminding us all, we stand on the shoulders of giants and heros!!

1 allanbmw, I lived in Italy during early 70s and traveled in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and other countries. I too heard first hand accounts while there which made me appreciate my US citizenship and the sacrifices that our country, along with so many other countries' citizens made, that the world might be free of all those "isms" that were trying to assert themselves.
Some of those stories would break your heart.
I went through the resistance museum in Copenhagen and saw the guns the movement made to carry out some of their resistance activities. It was truly inspiring. I wonder if many of the younger people of today realize what others sacrificed that enables them to now lead the life they live.
I was told by the hotelier in Amsterdam that Germans had not even been allowed to enter Holland until just a couple of years earlier because of the treatment of the Dutch citizens at the hands of the Germans during WW2. He had some very sad stories. Every country suffered because of that war, unspeakable suffering. Too bad human beings don't remember those lessons and learn from them.
Virginia Hall was one of those truly remarkable people that sacrificed much, endured much, that we could live in a world that, if not for her and people like her, would be entirely different today. Thank God Almighty there are people who have more moral courage than animal courage.

This is one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of the Second World War. Both Virginia Hall and Nancy Wake proved tougher than the enemy they faced. If captured alive they would have found themselves in Ravensbruck Women’s camp, where many so courageous women were tortured to death. We should be humble in such company.
Please consider the outstanding work done by the ‘Tartan Pimpernel’ and Monsignor O’Flaherty in rescuing fugitives from Nazi capture in France and Italy respectfully. The latter is the subject of the movie ‘The Scarlet and the Black’ where Gregory Peck played the Irish priest at the Vatican. Once again, thank you for bringing these stories to a modern audience. He found out his grandmother had been in espionage, and was well trained and all the necessary skills. At the funeral surviving Comrades in arms came to honor her memory. The family thought she had been a nurse. They knew that she was in the military, but they had no idea what she actually did. He said she was still surrounded by mystery, because no one was talking. Those should work with during World War II, honored her by maintaining her silence.
There must be other women, who did extraordinary things, during World War II, to return home, to be the typical cookie baking mothers and grandmothers. I would love to know more stories of these remarkable women.

I am currently reading "A Woman of No Importance" by Sonia Purcell about Virginia Hall. She deserves to be held up as one of the great women in American history. She not only had to fight the Nazis, she also had to fight her superiors who did not think she was capable of recruiting and managing a spy/sabotage network. She joined the American OSS because the British would not give her a role in France befitting her capabilities. Eventually she stopped playing nice with other agents that could not accept her as an equal or even superior, and she just did what needed to be done. While male agents were complaining about minor inconveniences, Hall was walking miles on a broken wooden leg with a bleeding stump. On more than one occasion she escaped capture by mere minutes but never considered leaving the heart of the action. Thank you for putting more light on this extraordinary women.

Wow! I would definitely want to see a movie made about her! (But only if it was kept true to history.) She was such a devoted, wise and disciplined woman. Having her teeth ground down as a wealthy young woman, not yet married? That’s next level! It’s amazing that she could get away with her disguises as she always had that limp. She lived through the war because she knew to stay out of the limelight- and even afterward, kept her identity and whereabouts secret because she was still at work. Just an amazing woman who deserves to be remembered and celebrated.

As a mom of two grown boys, it was of the utmost important that I taught my son's that all people were equal. My husband and I worked at remembering to speak of other people as just that, other "people". Not the African-American not the Asian not the woman of the group not the petite person not the very round person, etc etc. I believe children learn prejudiceness towards others by their parents and of course, the other "teachers" surrounding them. Without intention, we often speak of people in a very descriptive way, separating them in some way from the others. Even if the separation is positive like the pretty blond or the tall strong man or that very smart man who happens to be African-American.... We set up stereotypes and separations between people.
Just sharing my "mom's point of view"
But in no way questioning your statement.
      May you enjoy your day.
