Prokofiev Vision Fugitives, Op. 22 (Boris Berman)

- The title of the collection, Visions Fugitives, is French for "Fleeting (or Fugitive) Visions." These strange gems of piano writing evoke a half-dream in which one mood or impression is quickly replaced by a contrary or illogical leap out of the subconscious. They are among of Prokofiev's most striking and individual creations, unlike not only any other composer's piano music in tone and structure, but quite unlike much of Prokofiev's own music. They are most suited to listening with the lights dimmed and in a mood for free association.

A fantastic rendition of perhaps the only weak movement from Berman's recording. - เพลง
This is a madman at his best. He has this unique way of changing keys in an instant that is genious.
When I first started listening, I thought, "Oh, yay... an hour of Russian Satie..." But there's much more, and, clearly, great artists have found rich sources of inspiration in these "little" pieces. Thanks for posting! Great score-study video!
A Russian Satie..... perfect description, but yes, so much more.
The first one especially reminds me of Satie's Sarabande No. 1 or his Danses Gothiques...
Incredible, I thought exactly the same image! I also find a lot of similarity with B.Martinů, and, strange to say, even with Nino Rota! (see "7 pezzi per bambini")
My absolute favorite is the 8th. Thank you so much for sharing this sublime music with us.
OMG me too. It always stops me dead in my tracks. I want to learn it, but dont have the technique yet for all of it. Try Anna Gourari's recording on ecm also. Best wishes!
Mine too! I got a bunch of classical records for very cheap from my university once, and there was an album of Emil Gilels premiering Prokofiev's 8th Sonata as well as playing a few of the Visions Fugitives. That's where i first heard it. It's so warm and thoughtful. I put the needle back on it repeatedly
Mine too, I have already played it, its amazing the interpretation.
Of course you would like that one the most. 😆😆
It s my favourite too I loved playing it when I was 20.
The final piece brings the cycle to a very ethereal and satisfying close. The whole set should be listened to as a whole. The pieces are like little entities that fly off in many directions, but they still gravitate towards the home key of a minor.

Whoah, it is certainly inspiring pieces of music ! The Prokoviev's work on tonality is noticeable. Welcome in the TH-cam game of great uploaders, I'm sure your love for Prokoviev will have a worthy audience.

Thank you very much. One small correction: No. 9 should be "allegretto tranquillo".
LOL Szergej. Was Prokofjev born in Budapest??? :) Looks like...!
Love these pieces. Had so much fun learning it back then!
sehr mysteriöses Stück. Schön
Very poetic and virtuose rendering, thanks for sharing.
Dios mío, qué belleza el no. 8

I really love the 4th and 8th.... They are just amazing!!! omg
Bermans account of these miniatures is on a par with Richter. He brings such imagination and subtlety to one of Prokofiev's most delightful keyboard creations.
My God the I was captivated by the 1st song. This is as beautiful as music gets.
I notice you threw in an extra performance of the no. 10 at the end. It’s quite a different interpretation and I enjoy it much more than the first. The liberties taken with the tempo really enhance the mood of the piece. Although the precision of articulation by Berman on the first 20 is very admirable.
beautiful, thank you!
No. 8 is my favourite. I thought it was Poulenc the first time I heard it played.
Trotz gelegentlicher Prokofjev'scher 'Schroffheiten' sehr elegante Stücke, ebenso gespielt!
15 is breathtaking
Quelle jolie suite de bijoux musicaux... Et très techniques !
Actually, they are not that difficult to play. They are among Prokofiev’s easiest pieces that he wrote for piano. Most of them are playable at first sight.
I like this work
Capolavoro assoluto!!
La melancolía del ruso por su experiencia, es naturalmente hipnotizante.
#4,9,10, 11 and 15 sounds super fun!
The good news is that on a technical level these pieces are rather on the easier side. Even the most complex sounding one is still at “intermediate level”. I find them far easier to play than Prokofiev’s famous “Children’s Album” which was intended for young piano students.
New discovery for me. It listens like Grieg's Lyric Pieces but then in Prokofievs memorizing way. So playful and virtuous at the same time.
Had Berman fall semester 1981 at IU Bloomington. The only thing I ever played that he liked was Bartok's Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. He told me I should never, ever play Mozart. Ever. And I haven't. ;^)
Ouch 🤨
So relatable 😂😂
he sounds like a bit of a dick...
@@QalinaCom, he was wonderful. Not at all egotistical. I had him for a year at IU as well and learned so much. He was particular about expression and that it be very specific to the piece and composer.
I hope you WILL play Mozart.
Great! Thanks for adding the sheet music. Have you listened to Frederic Chiu's recording of these? The disc says that the total time is 27 minutes. But most recordings that I see on TH-cam hover around 22 minutes. That's quite a difference.
I love Frederic Chiu's visions fugitives!!
These pieces should be mandatory curriculum for all piano students
The second reminds me of bits from Bill Evan's 'Peace Piece'
No.12 starts off enigmatically ! :()
Love it
It is... hidden my bast song....

#10 is such a troll music though xD I like it
no. 14's feroce marking is definitely apt lol, maybe one of the most violent/cutthroat-sounding melodies i've heard
The koroliov excerpt you’ve attached is a childish rendition of the interpretation of musical markings. The recording preceding it shows maturity in conveying Prokofiev’s musical, textual desires through a calm demeanor, exactly that of which is seen on a day to day basis, hence the set title.
There is Prokofiev’s own recording and interpretation of no.10 on TH-cam. It’s quite interesting to compare it to both Koroliov’s and Berman’s interpretations. Quite different from both of them!

How did the composer make use of the chords
프로코피에프가 이런 음악을? 초기 작품인가요 아니면 원숙해진 말년의 작품인가요?
Prokofiev was born in 1891. The most of those pieces are written in 1915-1916, so is it early or mature style? I guess smth. in the middle😂

It is strongly subjective but I do not like the added track (repetition of n.10). I don't see Berman's version like the weak point as you mention. I think Koroliov makes the piece more like "scherzo" which I don't like that much. But I repeat, it's just my subjective opinion. Also, it disturbs me little bit to hear n.10 after this "dead end" of n.20 (I would add like 10 seconds gap at least....).
Anyway... - it is now 20 years since I entered the piano class at Prague conservatory. And few of those pieces were the very first which my teacher gave me to study. So... now, I am learning all the book and in September, I am gonna record it. My ex-teacher will be pleased for sure. :)
This is surprisingly beautiful. A modern take from some heavy influences by Debussy and Satie.
Thank you, oh master.
The 4th is so funny to me I dunno why 😂😂
Maybe you mean # 3?
Maybe it’s at measure 29 where Prokofiev just screws not only the main theme but literally everything that’s happened in the piece up to that point and completely changes the mood... I find that incredibly funny
9:55
where is the cover page for this book
Is it just me or are there clear influences of Debussy's preludes?
Yeah man I have the same feeling.
Some french Prokofiev biography says Prokofiev did nt like Debussy s music.

Is there any way you can remove the ads? It truly ruins the atmosphere built with the pieces, specially from the passing from one piece to another.
if you skip to the end of the video click then the repeat button and voila no ads

You could support the pianist by actually buying the music instead of stomping your feet and demanding things for free.
It sounds like a french composer..
Totally Russian❤😎🐻🐾😂😜🎉
두번째 곡 무섭당 ㅠ
Virtuoso playing of course, but why does he ignore or downplay so many nuances marked by Prokofiev?

How much more interesting than the grossly overrated Satie.
Grossly overrated Satie who seems to have been one of the first composers who engaged in Impressionism and minimalism, and is to this day considered unique and original by many and continues to influence. Who’s pieces are known, revered and still played to this day by many. His legacy speaks for itself. It is unclear why you are trying to tarnish Satie’s image, but it’s not fair, godammit!
@@fdggothic5015THANK YOU!
The “O” word is a slur. It is more offensive and destructive than “fuck”.
Y’all can’t ever just enjoy music lmfao
Why Satie and not Shostakovich lol was this an autocorrect error?
no.8 sounds like it was played too hastily, and ruins that melancholic tone it should be having, then again it still sounded better than having it played too slow without feeling
Нет, это нормальный темп, медленнее не играют, будет очень занудно... Это музыка Прокофьева, а не Брамса 😊 Она написана без лишней философской нагрузки 😜
