Now THIS is the most exciting thing I've heard in ages! I'm so sick of doctors stuck in their ways, not even looking at an alternative for health issues. Years of calcium oxalates kidney stones, ER visits, surgeries and yet nobody ever talked to me about reducing oxalates in my diet. I've switched to carnivore and arthritis, eye floaters and vertigo are non existent. I have no new kidney stones. The last issue I need to handle is chronic diarrhea which just might be my lack of an enzyme, time will tell. On another note a close friend in early 30s was diagnosed with glioblastoma, given 18 months to live with chemo, 6 months without. After a few surgeries he immeidately went home to start strict carnivore and daily ice baths, even though doctors said diet has nothing to do with it. He looks amazing!! That was almost 10 months ago and with each test, his tumor hasn't budged.....doctors are scratching their heads, still denying the diet and lifestyle. He leaves their office with a smile and continues living a beautiful life, golfing, working, traveling and not missing a beat. Thank you two for all you do for us. Please take over our sick care industry and give us our lives back!!!!🥩❤
When I was young, I followed Professor Noakes's work to be a better runner. Now, I follow his work to have better metabolic health. I feel greatly indebted to that man.
I'm a Filipino/American 70 year old woman from Ohio. Asians love to eat our most staple food, the RICE. I stopped eating rice for a month now, and i eat mostly wild caught salmon, organic grass pasture raised beef and eggs (which is my everyday favorite). I lost lots of weights especially on my belly part doing that. And this is the first time I was able to see you Doctor and got so interested with all you're saying in your video. I have a friend that's been doing carnivore for about three months. He mainly eats ribeye steaks, bacon, and eggs. He has lost about 60#. I'm at a healthy weight, but I'm thinking of trying it. Meal prep would be very easy.
I'm well into my 60's and as kids no one had access to sugar type foods and now when I look back I think a lot of the reason was to do with what we now call disposable income .. most of the families had very little , almost the case that the better and easier life has become the worse it's been for us overall.
Totally agree with you. Fizzy drinks for us children were strictly only for birthdays and Christmas. We ate home cooked food that was freshly cooked every day. We didn’t have a freezer until I was in my early teens so a walk to the local shops was almost every day.

Tony, yes. It's instructive to watch tv episodes and films from the 1960s and '70s because everybody's naturally slender. Even Kojak, who used to look fat to me, is slim compared to today's standards. I remember having a fulfilling philosophical conversation with my mother about the new law in the late 1960's that required all commercial food labels to include every ingredient used. It became a new adventure to closely inspect everything before buying, which I still do, and the list is getting longer and more multi-syllabic--titanium dioxide, polyethelene glycol--all going down our gullets and into our car oils. And cosmetics. No wonder having a cigarette for lunch doesn't take the pounds off like it used to.

20:30 THIS! It's a nuance that some folks seem to miss - the fact that our bodies can burn both glucose and fat is an agreed situation. And that our bodies will burn glucose more readily and preferentially is also widely agreed. I think what's missing is the WHY does/can our bodies burn the glucose so quickly and, in healthy people, easily. Is it because our bodies DON'T WANT glucose hanging about in the bloodstream and that it will throw all it's resources (insulin etc.) at the product ingested to get rid of it and keep it from causing us damage down the line. Insulin is (amongst other jobs) a firefighter trying to put out the fire that a high sugar/glucose/carb diet keeps lighting.

Oh my god what he said about you not knowing how crappy you feel when you eat the standard sugar laden diet is so spot on at least for me I feel like a teenager ever since doing keto/carnivore or younger some days! Things like sinus problems, all went away and never have a stuffed up nose I never realized how little I had used my sinuses and nose for breathing until I got off all the carbohydrates and notice how well our sinuses are supposed to work. I had some ice cream yesterday a very small amount probably half a cup, and it made me feel awful almost immediately not worth the sweet taste in my mouth.

We don't need personalities leading us anywhere unless they have impirical data and when their hypothesis is disproved they get out of the way. I tolerate advice and information but reserve the right to a final say about my way and my need to verify.
It would be so wonderful to have a specialization in the medical community that could REALLY assist those of us who have trouble with metabolic disease that are NOT athletes. That would be like paradise!!!

Getting rid of my addictions has been one of the main purposes in life. Negative thoughts about oneself can also be very addictive. We are afraid of our light and power. It is so much more accepted to keep low profile especially in Flanders. We are not chauvinistic neither proud and our language is considered inferior as well.We have been politically betrayed by Flemish politicians for many years. . They stay in politics for a while and then they move up the political ladder and go to the European parliament. Politicians who care are in a "cordon sanitaire". Every group that wants to react against the extreme left media and politics is being called extremist and cannot participate in the national politics. Is this not what is happening worldwide? Furthermore we are an extremely medicalized country. (very chemical). Sugar is difficult if you do not think highly of yourself and if you do not love yourself enough to say "no" every once and a while if you are an empath. Very interesting conversation, thank you!
This was a wonderful talk! It's so hard to learn this stuff and then go out into the world and have doctors and nutritionists say otherwise. I'd love to see a panel of yourself and maybe one or two others who "get it", and have a stage debate with 2-3 folks from the "traditionally accepted" approach to diet, disease prevention, and long term health. It'd be helpful to see/hear such a live debate. It'd give you a chance to you medical terms like, "That's BS!":)
Absolutely!!! That would be awesome. Plus vegan side, carnivore side and balanced diet side. Have a three way debate. Downside - no one in the world has a proven one size fits all humans with a long term RCT'S proving which one and why. Yes we have short term studies but nothing long term and properly control with correct size conducted by researchers on all sides.
The Tarahumara Indians of Mexico run 430 miles in two days on a diet of corn beans and squash along with sometimes five percent animal products they also include a fermented corn beverage of three percent alcohol at the start of the run. This information can be found in a book published in 2009 titled Born to run. There doesn't seem to be any blood sugar issues here. Rather it points to the superiority of a plant based diet. I would also recommend What I would consider a Bible on nutrition The macrobiotic path to total health: How to cure the 200 most common ailments by Michio Kushi. Eventually I believe the understanding of what the east and the west have to offer regarding health will come about.

YES, we know more now then we did in the 60's. More work needs to be done at the major universities. The main push at the major universities is still focused on medications and plant based. Governments don't want to admit they are feeding military personnel, prisoners (we feed them crap, then have to pay more for their poor health/ health care) and school kids with what I call the "lobbyist" diet and not in accordance with the basic information, data and limited evidence. So glad that when I went carnivore I kept my raw milk. It always made me feel great. It manages my severe damage to my esophagus and helps my stomach immensely. I have recently cut back on it a little and I am trying to adjust to more meat and fat. I healed my Lyme with meat and raw milk (nothing else worked) and feel like it is an invaluable food for those that tolerate it and need some real healing. I have seen it help others as well. Everything I have tried to give up the raw milk, all my horrible stomach and esophagus symptoms come back. (I was told when I was 15 that I would need an esophagus replacement over time). I still have my esophagus and I am now 55. Been drinking raw milk for over 20 years. I am doing more fat lately and less milk and am experimenting to see how this goes.

What low-carb visionaries fail to consider is that the empire has run on grains for 4000 years. That side will always have the help of governments. Can you imagine the cost of a prison that fed humans a human diet? If corn and wheat stopped being consumed whole economies would fall. Those interests all lobby extensively. This will always be a knowledge of the select few who take the time to unearth it and rationally consider it, but I'm afraid you'll find that most people are hyper authoritarian. And government will always control the authorities on this issue.
I remember have a disagreement once about 10 years ago. Where I was absolutely adamant that we didn’t need carbs (I don’t know why I knew this) but for some reason I never used that thought to go keto until last year
I somehow knew, probably heard it read it somewhere when I was in my early 20s, that carbs make you fat. Of course, I forgot about that as I grew older. Now 56, on carnivore and feeling fantastic!
WHAT IF? If there is a relationship between cognitive orientated decline / metabolic health / diet and we commit folks to care homes and hospitals where they are further fed high carb diets ... hastening their demise ... I saw a RIDICULOUS photo recently of the hospital meal fed to a patient after suffering cardiac issues - pure sugar.
I have found a stepping stone toward relieving my carb addiction (5 apples , chocolate and nuts, in between meals) . I postpone my snacks till after my meal so i find instead of many pieces, many handfuls and many apples ,i often dont even get round to any of those unneccesary snacks.
How did we ever manage (pre 1850) before food started to be processed on mass in factory style production. We are now swamped with 'food like substances' they look like food, taste even smells like food but are basically devoid of giving us the necessary vitamins, minerals, macro's that our bodies need on a cellular level.
A first step might be to change the recommendations of the heart foundation and diabetes foundation whose food recommendations are very dated and wrong. Doctors who prescribed statins as a matter of course. Doctors who focus only cholesterol readings only. To encompass Doctors to understand what you teach. Patients should not be second guessing their Doctors. Well done guys great podcast.

Combined with interactive media for communication and support. This could help so many people to become and stay healthy.
I'm 6'1 and 77kg, I would once have thought 81kg to be as light as I could possibly be. My observations tell me the more fat the lighter I get. It would be interesting to hear how this could be. All chemistry is important to this subject. We are not purely organic machines, inorganic chemistry plays a big part. To be a scientist you MUST understand and be able to use the fundamentals.
Great discussion! Changed April this year from carb addicted to low carb training as long endurance atlete (Ironman en ultrarunning). The changes it made to my training and performance are amazing... I turned 50 this year and a week ago I improved my marathon Personal Best with more then 30 minutes...would like to see more about the effect with exogenous ketones...
People ave become too accustomed to thinking in terms of "going on a diet" with the implication that they will be "coming back to normal" eventually. I have found low carb sustainable because I looked at it as a lifestyle change.
I’ve figured the key to the whole low carb/ketogenic thing after seeing a different take each week from different low card docs. Just stop eating period. That’s the only safe way to go.

Hi Sonja….I have FSGS. When diagnosed my eGFR was 17%….that was 13 years ago. I have been keto and ketovore for 5 years….my eGFR has been in mid 50s for over 4 years.
Car racing has influenced regular cars more than just regular cars being made and profitable. Racing has said, what do we need to do to make it last and go faster. Then oh, right we can put this on the regular car and make it safer and longer lasting or not break with less metal added. Or run the regular car longer with less problems. Keep it up nokes and cywes. I plan to buy the book to share with people that want to know what to do and why. It will be a best seller for a few years in a row.

Interesting that the prof takes Metformin at his age when prof Ben Bikman opines that it is a mitochondrial toxin that inhibits exercise gains, especially when the prof has a personal trainer .. that’s the complexity of science right there isn’t it?
I long for further discussion as I can't even walk on Metformin. As soon as I stop my body craves physical activity, and I can put on muscle and burn fat. On Metformin, I can't get myself off the couch. What is wrong with me that I feel like an invalid on Metformin. Off it, I am my old kick-ass self again. 😢 I can't understand the concept that when AMPK is activated it signals that cells are stressed and those cells become senescent. Commonly referred to zombie cells. Well not just my cells go into a zombie state. I turn into a zombie, unable to function in an optimal state. The bigger problem is these zombies cells; research points to the beta cells in pancreas are not producing insulin due to being senescent. Metformin from my perspective and experience seems fraught with danger. I am not an athlete but was in my youth. I just want to optimize my energy to just get through the day like a killer machine. What am I missing in my knowledge? Please help me to understand. The rice diet takes people of meds and there is reversal of diabetes. This diet is low protein and zero fats. High in fruit and sugar. Again what am I missing?

He also _appears_ to conflate A1C measurements (% of hemoglobin that is glycated) with glucose concentration in millimoles per liter.
Very disappointed. The Noakes Foundation is based in Cape Town South Africa. If I go onto the internet to buy this book online via the South African sites it will cost me around R3600 . On the Noakes Foundation website this book is available for $112.50 . Which equates to R 2050 at the current exchange rate. Why must we pay almost double in South Africa ? Would like to purchase the book but don't want to be ripped off
I love eating this way. Mostly carnivore here. Only one pan to wash most the time...likeing that alot! Migrains reducing from 72 hrs down...love that most of all!!!😁
So much respect for both of you. I am trying carnivore for such a long time. Sometimes I can do it for 3 mnths feeling great and then something(?) pops up and I am off. I don’t know exactly what I do that I give up but I am SEVERELY addicted ro carbs and sugar. I sooooo wish I could just stick to carnivore/ keto. I do not like veggies or fruit. For people that are over weight Maybe young any diet is good if they stick to it When you have had an event heart attack metabolic disease stroke bad circulation etc we need to know the facts that coursed it How to reverse the disease if possible. Weight loss will follow if you stick with the low carb and fasting Doctors normally just say Mediterranean diet stents medication and calories Having discussed what I have learned from pod casts , my orthopaedic doctor I had a visit with, listened intensely to my findings as my inflammation had gone to my diet , the appointment took 2 years to get, Keto changed the symptoms in two weeks

Getting rid of my addictions has been one of the main purposes in life. Negative thoughts about oneself can also be very addictive. We are afraid of our light and power. It is so much more accepted to keep low profile especially in Flanders. We are not chauvinistic neither proud and our language is considered inferior as well.We have been politically betrayed by Flemish politicians for many years. . They stay in politics for a while and then they move up the political ladder and go to the European parliament. Politicians who care are in a "cordon sanitaire". Every group that wants to react against the extreme left media and politics is being called extremist and cannot participate in the national politics. Is this not what is happening worldwide? Furthermore we are an extremely medicalized country. (very chemical). Sugar is difficult if you do not think highly of yourself and if you do not love yourself enough to say "no" every once and a while if you are an empath. Very interesting conversation, thank you!

This was a wonderful talk! It's so hard to learn this stuff and then go out into the world and have doctors and nutritionists say otherwise. I'd love to see a panel of yourself and maybe one or two others who "get it", and have a stage debate with 2-3 folks from the "traditionally accepted" approach to diet, disease prevention, and long term health. It'd be helpful to see/hear such a live debate. It'd give you a chance to you medical terms like, "That's BS!":)
Absolutely!!! That would be awesome. Plus vegan side, carnivore side and balanced diet side. Have a three way debate. Downside - no one in the world has a proven one size fits all humans with a long term RCT'S proving which one and why. Yes we have short term studies but nothing long term and properly control with correct size conducted by researchers on all sides.
The Tarahumara Indians of Mexico run 430 miles in two days on a diet of corn beans and squash along with sometimes five percent animal products they also include a fermented corn beverage of three percent alcohol at the start of the run. This information can be found in a book published in 2009 titled Born to run. There doesn't seem to be any blood sugar issues here. Rather it points to the superiority of a plant based diet. I would also recommend What I would consider a Bible on nutrition The macrobiotic path to total health: How to cure the 200 most common ailments by Michio Kushi. Eventually I believe the understanding of what the east and the west have to offer regarding health will come about.
@@johnremesat4464 I visit the Tarahumaras one week every three months en Canyon de Cobre, Creel and Parral Chihuahua. My mother in law lives there. They love to drink and smoke. Lots of health issues as they get older.

Great discussion. Love to hear Prof. Noakes eats well and still takes supplements. That is so near and dear to my heart. Interesting to touch on the Randle cycle. YES, we know more now then we did in the 60's. More work needs to be done at the major universities. The main push at the major universities is still focused on medications and plant based. Governments don't want to admit they are feeding military personnel, prisoners (we feed them crap, then have to pay more for their poor health/ health care) and school kids with what I call the "lobbyist" diet and not in accordance with the basic information, data and limited evidence. Food type/ Eating style / lifestyle kills more people than any virus

So glad that when I went carnivore I kept my raw milk. It always made me feel great. It manages my severe damage to my esophagus and helps my stomach immensely. I have recently cut back on it a little and I am trying to adjust to more meat and fat. I healed my Lyme with meat and raw milk (nothing else worked) and feel like it is an invaluable food for those that tolerate it and need some real healing. I have seen it help others as well. Everything I have tried to give up the raw milk, all my horrible stomach and esophagus symptoms come back. (I was told when I was 15 that I would need an esophagus replacement over time). I still have my esophagus and I am now 55. Been drinking raw milk for over 20 years. I am doing more fat lately and less milk and am experimenting to see how this goes.

What low-carb visionaries fail to consider is that the empire has run on grains for 4000 years. That side will always have the help of governments. Can you imagine the cost of a prison that fed humans a human diet? If corn and wheat stopped being consumed whole economies would fall. Those interests all lobby extensively. This will always be a knowledge of the select few who take the time to unearth it and rationally consider it, but I'm afraid you'll find that most people are hyper authoritarian. And government will always control the authorities on this issue.

I remember have a disagreement once about 10 years ago. Where I was absolutely adamant that we didn’t need carbs (I don’t know why I knew this) but for some reason I never used that thought to go keto until last year
I somehow knew, probably heard it read it somewhere when I was in my early 20s, that carbs make you fat. Of course, I forgot about that as I grew older. Now 56, on carnivore and feeling fantastic!
WHAT IF? If there is a relationship between cognitive orientated decline / metabolic health / diet and we commit folks to care homes and hospitals where they are further fed high carb diets ... hastening their demise ... I saw a RIDICULOUS photo recently of the hospital meal fed to a patient after suffering cardiac issues - pure sugar.
I have found a stepping stone toward relieving my carb addiction (5 apples , chocolate and nuts, in between meals) .
I postpone my snacks till after my meal so i find instead of many pieces, many handfuls and many apples ,i often dont even get round to any of those unneccesary snacks.
How did we ever manage (pre 1850) before food started to be processed on mass in factory style production.
We are now swamped with 'food like substances' they look like food, taste even smells like food but are basically devoid of giving us the necessary vitamins, minerals, macro's that our bodies need on a cellular level.

A first step might be to change the recommendations of the heart foundation and diabetes foundation whose food recommendations are very dated and wrong. Doctors who prescribed statins as a matter of course. Doctors who focus only cholesterol readings only. To encompass Doctors to understand what you teach. Patients should not be second guessing their Doctors. Well done guys great podcast.
Wouldn't it be great to have a worldwide reliable science based knowledge center on ketogenics? With free access for everyone? Like a wikipedia but specializing in keto knowledge? Combined with interactive media for communication and support. This could help so many people to become and stay healthy.

I'm 6'1 and 77kg, I would once have thought 81kg to be as light as I could possibly be. My observations tell me the more fat the lighter I get. It would be interesting to hear how this could be.
All chemistry is important to this subject. We are not purely organic machines, inorganic chemistry plays a big part. To be a scientist you MUST understand and be able to use the fundamentals.
Great discussion! Changed April this year from carb addicted to low carb training as long endurance atlete (Ironman en ultrarunning). The changes it made to my training and performance are amazing... I turned 50 this year and a week ago I improved my marathon Personal Best with more then 30 minutes...would like to see more about the effect with exogenous ketones...
I would love to see the standard instruction for personal training certification change along those lines! Carb loading is still the basis there.
People ave become too accustomed to thinking in terms of "going on a diet" with the implication that they will be "coming back to normal" eventually.
I have found low carb sustainable because I looked at it as a lifestyle change.
I'll buy this book. I will save up to buy a shelf full of these books to loan out!

I’ve figured the key to the whole low carb/ketogenic thing after seeing a different take each week from different low card docs. Just stop eating period. That’s the only safe way to go.

It looks like the originally intended first word of the book title was going to be KETOGENICS, but that the publisher Elsevier ended up starting it with KETOGENIC with no s on the end of the word. I think either should be OK, but it might be good to clarify all listings, so that any confusion does not inhibit pre-orders and sales.

Hi Sonja….I have FSGS. When diagnosed my eGFR was 17%….that was 13 years ago. I have been keto and ketovore for 5 years….my eGFR has been in mid 50s for over 4 years.
Car racing has influenced regular cars more than just regular cars being made and profitable. Racing has said, what do we need to do to make it last and go faster. Then oh, right we can put this on the regular car and make it safer and longer lasting or not break with less metal added. Or run the regular car longer with less problems.
Keep it up nokes and cywes. I plan to buy the book to share with people that want to know what to do and why. It will be a best seller for a few years in a row.

Interesting that the prof takes Metformin at his age when prof Ben Bikman opines that it is a mitochondrial toxin that inhibits exercise gains, especially when the prof has a personal trainer .. that’s the complexity of science right there isn’t it?
I long for further discussion as I can't even walk on Metformin. As soon as I stop my body craves physical activity, and I can put on muscle and burn fat. On Metformin, I can't get myself off the couch. What is wrong with me that I feel like an invalid on Metformin. Off it, I am my old kick-ass self again. 😢
I can't understand the concept that when AMPK is activated it signals that cells are stressed and those cells become senescent. Commonly referred to zombie cells. Well not just my cells go into a zombie state. I turn into a zombie, unable to function in an optimal state. The bigger problem is these zombies cells; research points to the beta cells in pancreas are not producing insulin due to being senescent. Metformin from my perspective and experience seems fraught with danger. I am not an athlete but was in my youth. I just want to optimize my energy to just get through the day like a killer machine.
What am I missing in my knowledge? Please help me to understand.
The rice diet takes people of meds and there is reversal of diabetes. This diet is low protein and zero fats. High in fruit and sugar.

15:10 Noakes does not appear to be aware of the hypothesis that A1C values can be higher than expected (based on average glucose) if RBCs are living longer than average.
He also _appears_ to conflate A1C measurements (% of hemoglobin that is glycated) with glucose concentration in millimoles per liter.

Very disappointed. The Noakes Foundation is based in Cape Town South Africa. If I go onto the internet to buy this book online via the South African sites it will cost me around R3600 . On the Noakes Foundation website this book is available for $112.50 . Which equates to R 2050 at the current exchange rate. Why must we pay almost double in South Africa ? Would like to purchase the book but don't want to be ripped off

Why does Tim Noakes choose Metformin over berberine? Does he use a continuous glucose monitor to see what foods he’s sensitive to?
So much respect for both of you. I am trying carnivore for such a long time. Sometimes I can do it for 3 mnths feeling great and then something(?) pops up and I am off. I don’t know exactly what I do that I give up but I am SEVERELY addicted ro carbs and sugar. I sooooo wish I could just stick to carnivore/ keto. I do not like veggies or fruit. I do love coffee with cream though.
I know that feeling so well. I try to just get back on track again...time and time again. And yes, it's hard.
If you're eating sugar have it with your main meal. Sugar with fat and protein does not spike insulin as much.

Maybe young any diet is good if they stick to it
When you have had an event heart attack metabolic disease stroke bad circulation etc we need to know the facts that coursed it
How to reverse the disease if possible. Weight loss will follow if you stick with the low carb and fasting
Doctors normally just say Mediterranean diet stents medication and calories
Having discussed what I have learned from pod casts , my orthopaedic doctor I had a visit with, listened intensely to my findings as my inflammation had gone to my diet , the appointment took 2 years to get, Keto changed the symptoms in two weeks
When I was growing up, it seemed to be a common belief that if you stopped weight training, it would "run to fat". Interesting to hear of a possible mechanism for that - i.e. that it will happen to people on a high carb diet.
The conversation would have a much better flow if the host wouldn't constantly interrupt the guest.
