I used to go to our local multiplex on a Friday and watch the midnight show of whatever happened to be on. I walked into this movie with no prior knowledge or expectation and walked out at the end having been utterly charmed. What a gem of a film this is. I don't know if "unexpected" is the right way to describe it, but it feels right to me. Just a lovely, warm film.
This movie launched Tim robbins career, it was his first big role after small roles in Top gun and others movies. Excellent movie, also Kevin Costner was perfect
Even the music is perfect. This scene: Close up on Sarandon, barely covered with a light weight blanket acting out count down to lift off. Long slow pan down her body to Costner painting her toe nails with a the best is yet to come Honey expression. Sound track "Sixty minute Man". Now that's sexy.
Back when you might loan a DVD to a friend, I loaned this one, telling the friend that it was one of the great romantic comedies, and you didn't really have to know or like baseball. They both loved it. I love how Davis responds to the boy who says, "hit a home run Crash." "Shut up, kid."
Siskel claims Costner had a minor role. Sure, he was the has been baseball player, but he had all the great lines and was the leader of the Bulls team. He was THE star, along with Sarandon, of this movie, Gene.
Yes a well done behind the scenes an kept it entertaining useally they dont do both well....as a baseball player i could watch a pure documetary type movie but may be not the rest of the people
I think this movie exposed the dark side of baseball now u know if ur favorite team loses a game its because the pitcher didnt do what the catcher told to throw...baseball untold dark secret...i always listen to my catcher...i just seem to alway get picked to pitch...because real heat would make little league nervous....side arm too...one little league game i threw from side arm 3 quarter underhand every pitch i threw from a different hour on the clock 3 o clock side arm use to scare the pee out of them...i just got amazed watching the looks on the faces trying to swing at straight side arm...i think i threw a 6 hitter an struck out 9 or 10...i cant help but think nuke was inspred by Nolan Ryan wearing his 37 number....talk about bringing heat...
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig would have been alive in 1988 and should have been there for Bull Durham. But I realize Kevin Costner was dying to wear a Cleveland Indians baseball jersey.
I love this movie, but if it were made today it would be crushed by people on the internet because the reality is that while it's very entertaining and funny, it's a pretty lousy portrayal of life in the higher levels of the minors. The scenes with Robbins pitching are silly -- his windup, motion, and delivery are impossibly inefficient and he would never be able to generate the velocity he is supposed to have without any leg drive whatsoever -- he'd be lucky to throw a pitch > 60 mph with that motion. No amount of head games could make a star pitcher at this level miss Crash with the ball at the distance in this scene. These guys are supposed to be in AAA -- just one level below MLB -- in RL several of them would have had stints in "the show" by now either called up as a reserve due to an injury, or as a September callup. The scene on the bus where Crash describes the show to them and they react as if it's some fairy tale place no one has ever been to is ludicrous at the AAA level. Compared to "For Love of the Game" where the portrayal of a game and a veteran pitcher is pretty realistic, this movie is just campy slapstick for the most part.
Meh. It may have been technically AAA, but storytelling-wise, it was a poetic amalgam stand-in for the entire minor leagues, much of which happens in obscure dusty two-horse towns. As for Robbins not having the physical delivery of a credible pro pitcher, that's pretty irrelevant to the story. If you were looking for authentic ballplayer kinetics, just watch a video of a damn game (there's plenty here on YT). It sounds like the deep enduring genius of this baseball folk tale was totally lost on you!
@@markw4206 Sounds like you have trouble with reading comprehension as I started by saying "I love this movie." What I said is, "It's great IN SPITE of the fact that it's not in any way an accurate portrayal of minor league baseball." Which -- amalgam or not -- it isn't. Aside from the crappy bus rides and announcers and hangers on, this is not even close to being a realistic portrayal. It's a campy comedy -- a very funny one most of the time -- but just a campy comedy. Walt Whitman (blech) quotes not withstanding, this is NOT some serious examination of the meaning of the game to the American people or any other artsy statement you are trying to embody it with.
@@DirectionlessStudent It's... actually not even principally a comedy. There are certainly funny moments, but they're all laced with poignant conflict and meaning that really overshadows the haha. I'm sorry you didn't get it. Not every movie can be appreciated by every viewer. Stick to watching baseball replay videos if realistic pitching and batting form or documentary were what you were looking for. There are some great World Series replays here, or the Ken Burns miniseries. Real baseball and none of that "campy" commentary on the wistful "what ifs" of life, love and maturing as a young man stuff that seems to have flown over your head. Cheers.
@@markw4206 Sorry but if you think this is a "poignant" movie filled with conflict and meaning, perhaps you should try a Kurosawa film or something with an ACTUAL meaningful story and imagery. Just for kicks, ya know? But maybe that's too far over YOUR head. It's a fucking romcom moron -- it's not some deep, symbolic movie talking about the meaning of life by representing it as a minor league baseball season LOL. But hey -- you go on right on thinking only a critical genius such as yourself is able to recognize the life-altering subtlety of Bull Durham. ROFLMAO
Great arguments .. if the Durham Bulls were a AAA minor league club. However, when the movie was made, they were the Braves Class A Carolina League team. So .. yeah. Sorry you missed out on so much of this movie with a completely incorrect premise.
It's stunning that Susan Sarandon wasn't nominated for best actress for Bull Durham. It may the very best performance of her career.
The goat of baseball movies
#1 in my Top 10, FOR SURE

A perfect way to phrase it...totally agree.

he was Brilliant in Five Corners
The script is smart and delivered cleverly by very talented actors. Kudos to the casting director!
As much as these two rave about the movie, they don't even do it justice. If you haven't seen it, you have to fix that.

Best sports movie EVER!

He via the star. What the hell?
He said less flashy. Not minor.
If you are an actor, this is a movie you would be proud to have on your resume.
"Crash must have called the guy a c--- s-----"
"He's sooo romantic ... *sigh."
Kevin Costner starred in 3 great baseball films. "Bull Durham," "Field of Dreams" and "For Love of the Game."
For The Love of The Game is boring drivel.
"For The Love Of The Game" was absolutely awful.
2 great baseball films.
@@linkbiff1054 Damn, nobody likes "For Love of the Game." As I remember, it was very moving.
For love of the game is only good on baseball scenes. I fast-forward to each inning he pitches. Rest is fairly uninteresting
Thank God Gene got this one right. He was a basket-case at times.
I thought they both were at times. 🤪
Ebert called this one in
This movie was oozing with sex…it’s not just a great romantic comedy that depicts baseball perfectly. It’s sexy as hell. The bathtub scene? Smokin 🔥
Funniest baseball movie

One point that didn't work for me: Robbins is too old to be playing the 'kid'.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig would have been alive in 1988 and should have been there for Bull Durham. But I realize Kevin Costner was dying to wear a Cleveland Indians baseball jersey.
Babe Ruth died in 1948
And Lou Gehrig died in 1941
What the Frak are you talking about???!?
"Bull Durham" came out in movie theaters in 1988.
