      Karina Nunes it seems to be that the actual vault is bigger, therefore harder to achieve. I’m not sure, but ever since it has gotten bigger, the move has been harder to achieve and that might be the reason.

    • @seleleota

      she just got more power than anyone else did really... that's what it comes down to... and she could take the really hard landing and stand it up

    • @scottstrange8809

      Look at Produnova’s run and block off the horse in comparison... She has better technique off the board, and block during pre-flight huge block and her rotation in the flight is so, so much faster.
      The horse versus table: no, the table gives you way better and safer blocks than the old horse ever did. It should be, and in men’s gymnastics IS way easier to turn over a hand double on the table versus the old horse. It boils down to technique and power

    It's just my theory, but I think the reason why no one can succed with the Produnova nowadays is the change of the vaulting table. It seems to me the block there for front vaults was bigger.

    • @shushunovafan4301
      @shushunovafan4301 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's the opposite actually, blocking is much harder on the horse than the tongue since you have to be much more precise with hand placements.

    • @JennSCHWA
      @JennSCHWA 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There’s no theory. It’s a very dangerous vault. She was good at it because it was her skill and she worked on it to be a vault in her name and over time, it looked easy for her because it was. Now, people who attempt it even working on it for years are over thinking because there’s so many injuries that can come from that vault alone and they’re trying to not die and land. That’s why. There’s no other reason.

      The only thing other than her being exceptionally powerful and fast is that with the out of 10 scoring system, deductions for form weren't as harsh, and tucks were often "cowboyed", allowing faster rotations. But all in all she was just POWERFUL!

  • @internaloptometrist2702
    @internaloptometrist2702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    When they changed the vault, it changed the sport. Notice not many high level gymnasts were able to learn the new table and keep going. It did seem to create a new generation of gymnasts who weren’t too engrained in there old skills. 🥳

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The old vault horse HAD to go, it was just too dangerous. There was very little room for even being slightly off, and several devastating injuries had resulted. The new table is much safer. The best can adapt to any situation. If not… then they aren’t the best anymore.

  • @LaurenThompsonIsMyRealName
    @LaurenThompsonIsMyRealName 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The vault always impresses me because it has to take guts to go for it, to even try it. And how do they know just when to do their roundoff or handspring so they will hit the trampoline just right? It's probably one of the more dangerous elements but the vault is always impressive.

      The best thing is to give harsh penalties for landing with feet and body(butt) together, which I think is in the code now anyway?

    • @catriona5268
      @catriona5268 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was. A new Code of Points is put out each quadrennium. In the 2017-20 COP, its comparative advantage over the next-highest vault was lowered, and a specific rule was introduced to downgrade it to just a handspring tucked (really easy vault) if the behind and feet touch at the same time.

    • @sktzn6829
      @sktzn6829 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should but that just goes against the reason for a code of points. Its high up there because it is the hardest vault and only those who can do it will try it. That's like lowering the Mo, Nabieva or Hristakieva because people could get injured doing them. Like people can hurt themselves on every single vault anyway. Also gymnastics these days is boring enough. Everyone is copy pasting routines on floor, bb and uneven bars and doing the same vaults as everyone else. Would be cool to see any Produnova (well executed or a complete flop) in the middle of a Amanar/Cheng/Chusovitina fiesta.

Aliya Mustafina comes to mind. Always has bent knees in vaults and on floor when twisting... maybe because she gets less height? I think she might be retired now. Not sure.

    beautiful, Bogi put artistic in artistic gymnastics, everything since and already in her time has been more technically difficult but lacked her grace and elegance. Biles for instance is a vastly superior gymnast technically but is she really a better artistic gymnast, her artistic bits are only there to fill time between tumbles. Gymnastics has not improved one bit artistically since Bogi's time, if anything it's gone backwards with opportunistic routines calculated for maximum point potential with minimum risk.

    • @mercuryfever392
      @mercuryfever392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jkrdyn See this brings me to an interesting question. And that is, in 1996 at the Olympics would a height adjustment for smaller, shorter gymnasts have been easier for them? It makes me wonder if that's one reason why Dominque Moceanu and Kerri Strug sat down on their vaults. Remember in 2000 at the Olympics in Sydney? They had that whole deal with the vault being too low. Taller gymnasts like Svetlana Khorkina totally crashed on the landing because it didn't give her enough leverage.

    I think the Produnova salto is triple tuck not double.Because when the 70's I count the flip is 2.

    • @jesb3973
      @jesb3973 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rotation count starts after the block (as you leave the vaulting table). You could think of it as 2.5 rotations because you leave the table upside-down, however it is officially 2 rotations.

    When I tell my grandparents about gymnastics they ask ‘do you do rings or horse’ and I’m like that’s boys gymnastics! Because they’re so used to the old gymnastics

      No, the body type of a gymnasthad change radically over the decade and have been a mater of discussion since Always. At first gymnast were women with low muscle , then little girl and now young woman very muscular. Just look at the comment under a video of today gymnastic , 1/3 would be like: they are not girls they look like men and so. 40 years ago people were talking about women gymnastic which became little girl gymnastic. The bodytime of a gymnast had always been discuss sometimes more than the performance

    • @peregrination3643
      @peregrination3643 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it also depends on the country. China admits to purposefully selecting little girl bodies to this day, even by Chinese standards. US and GB tend to favor power gymnasts. Russia tends to have more artistic, middle-toned gymnasts. Less dominant countries I don't think have had vast enough of a pool of potential to get too selective. So even though the sport itself leans toward power right now, each country still has some preference on style and body type. Looking at this through the decade would be interesting. Leo styles too.

      Strange to judge a gymnast by how their body sets muscles
      I have actually never seen a comment saying that the women looks like the men in gymnastics, but I don't doubt the fact that they are there, just not 1/3.
      The main discussion in gymnastics today is whether there is (enough) artistry
      Artistry is different from person to person and so is their body.
      Gymnastics today requires big skills, big skills takes a lot of strength, strength = muscles
      It seems like we are back to the "how a girl should look"-talk
      Maybe this a topic that would be "fun" to discuss, but it would be weird making a video about it.

    • @peregrination3643
      @peregrination3643 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Especially during the Olympics, it was a wide-spread news/social media hype. Sometimes it's just the pure muscle more apparent in a still photo in a mainstream article like NBC's site, but there was also a beach photo of Aly, Maddie, and Simone in bikinis showing their six-packs that was viral and heavily criticized for the girls actually being men. "Only men can get abs" type criticism. It was ridiculous. I don't think those people watched gymnastics, they just came across the articles and photo elsewhere.

      Today's gymnast on any apparatus in the 1950s would be insane! Same withfigure skating. The axel was itself a new feat, while today girls regularly do triple triple and even quad jumps.

    To be honest, the person who actually changed vaulting for women the most was undoubtedly Cheng Fei- LEGEND!
    Edit: what the actual fuck. A video on vaulting and Cheng Fei, the best vaulter of all time is not in it? She has three consecutive world vault titles to her name! More than any other gymnast!
