At the time George was going through litigation with his record company because he wanted to break his contract with them, and create the kind of music he wanted to. In the end he was able to break the contract, but the record company kept the rights to all his previous songs. This song is basically his declaration of freedom from the image of George Michael the record company created for him. That’s why in this video, he is blowing up his previous image, the leather jacket, the juke box from the Faith video, etc. He used the supermodels of that time in his video, and we never see him.

It is kind of strange that they would make such a big deal out of him being caught in that restroom in Beverly Hills. Reminds me of what they did the Mel Gibson after he spoke out against Hollywood they made him look like a total psycho by releasing personal phone messages which could have happened to anybody but no, it was Mel Gibson. So this song and video are one of the few punches back at the industry so I find it very poetic and brave

George wrote two songs titled Freedom. The first song was released in 1984 with his band Wham and is totally different from this song.

This is an original song by GM. Written, produced arranged and all the instruments played by him him. Sampled many times by past and current artists.
This is from his 2nd solo album. Listen without Prejudice.. This song was an anthem to breaking away from the image that Sony wanted him to have. He didn't want to be a sex symbol, or just have his image drive. his music. What he wanted was to be recognized as a songwriter which,he was. This is the reason he Expressed in the song that he has a different face for the boys at MTV. He eventually sued Sony to get out of his contact. He was a brave one, an innovator, and a pioneer for standing up to his record lable.
The man sold a 130 million records in his lifetime.Nobody ever wrote for him produced for him going back all the way to his Wham days. He was respected in the music business and admired by a lot of soul singers. Check out the duets with Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles,. Mary J and Whitney.. The list goes on really.!

George Michael was legally obligated to make a music video for the company that he was trying to leave, but nowhere in his contract did it say that he had to appear in the video. He got the supermodels of that time and had them lip sync the song. The song is about having the freedom to change your image ("Sometimes the clothes do not make the man" and "All we have to do is change these lies and make them true") and the freedom to be who you really are ("All we have to see is I don't belong to you and you don't belong to me"). If you watch his earlier hit music video "FAITH" he wears the leather jacket and leans on the jukebox that you see him burn up in this video.

    It’s not a cover.
He was a heart throb in the 80s
“I was every hungry school girls pride and joy and I guess that was enough for me.” But he was really gay. And he thought if his audience found out they’d reject him. “I won’t let you down. So please don’t give me up. gotta have some faith in the sound. It’s the one good thing that I’ve got.”

The song has been applied to society in general in that we do not control each other and cannot know someone by the way they look. George was also tired of remaking himself to please everyone else. He needed his creative and personal freedom. Many famous people felt owned by big business (fashion and music industries).

The real gay mans anthem, not sure its a thing but this song is all about it. "Sometimes the clothes do not make the man" indeed.
