- We are very excited to be sharing to be introducing the new Tern GSD in all it's new variants. The GSD has been a smashing hit since the introduction in 2017. The team at Tern has been very diligent about connecting with the community of cargo bike users and improving based on their feedback and experience.
The new GSD has many great improvements including the updated Bosch Generation 4 Cargo Line Motor. The addition of the Gates Carbon Belt, Rohloff E14 hub on the top of the line GSD R14. Other changes include a new chain guard, kickstand with a remote and updated accessories including the Clubhouse Plus.

Tern really hit the spot with the GSD. Having smaller wheels brings many advantages, you can put the load lower at the back for example. Smaller wheels are stronger than bigger wheels as well, the smaller rims being less flexible than larger ones.
There are loads of options for the cargo area at the rear. So that one bicycle can be used for many different things.
Small children would have far more fun travelling on that than being sat on the backseat of a car.

Still too expensive for a bike. Be realistic; money doesn’t grow on trees and unless you’re that standard city hipster or upper class family I think price are way too much for something you want to be more accessible. Rad power bikes are for sure not as well nuit but they understand that electric bikes are not for an upper elite. Stay safe. 😊
I think if you look at the demographic buying the GSD you would be very surprised. People are replacing cars with these bikes and they need to built to a quality which can be relied on in the same way. Many products out there cut many corners where the novice rider doesn’t notice and they create the impression that your getting a good deal. Your often getting a product which doesn’t last and needs increasingly more service. This just kicks the can down the road.
This is without even discussing the safety factor. But we can all decide ourselves how we want to spend or invest our money.

Great review. Tern really listened to customer feedback this time around. My only complaint about my S10 (which is probably very NY-specific) is that the lack of front suspension made for a pretty harsh ride over our terrible roads. Seat suspension helped alleviate it somewhat, but having that front and seat suspension standard is probably going to make a huge difference in smoothing out the ride. If only I could retrofit that fork! Oh well.

Thanks for addressing the kickstand question. I've been looking at the Rolling Jackass Stand, and knowing that the new GSD stand isn't compatible with the Gen 1.
A feature that I wish Clem had: a way to attach an integrated light to the underside of the front Cargo tray I bought from y'all. Once I add a crate, my front light can't illuminate the trail very well. It is excellent for finding the keys in my purse, however.
I upgraded my generation 1 S10 GSD with the Atlas Kickstand and it was a great improvement. It doesn't lock in place like new Atlas but still works really well.
I would recommend the Atlas kickstand for the Gen 1 bike. It could be possible to mount a light under the tray, but I don’t think you can easily mount the handlebar light there.

Fantastic bike. I am a car owner for one more week, and a GSD with the belt and Rohloff would be my perfect replacement.
The only thing is the security. Unfortunately for the time being I think I’m going to stick with my manual Dutch bike for daily riding and just use my R&M e-bike for fun rides and longer distances. But as I go back to going more places at some point, the unpowered bike probably won’t cut it with the insane headwinds we get here. Not sure what I’ll do.
I wish there was better bike parking options to address this. I think this is the future.

One thing you don't mention Chris is the weight. These bikes are *heavy* at around 80+lb (US measures) - that's a LOT for anyone who can't register what this number means. Good luck getting that to stand vertically!
All that cargo capacity has to have some weight penalty, but I can't help but feel they just kept adding stuff to it, and forgot about the weight factor. As Kiichiro Toyoda (founder of Toyota) famously stated: "Too heavy is bad design".
That aside... although I *love* the tech of the Rohloff and Enviolo sealed hubs w belt drives, those are the money-no-option choices, but honestly the 'deal' here is the entry model. It has excellent Shimano gearing, same latest Gen 4 motor, and if/when needed, you can buy a 2nd 500w battery, giving you 900w to ride all week without charging. IMHO, that's the one to go for.
This is good feedback. I do think there are many use scenarios which require a lower weight, but cargo bikes are usually optimized to be strong over light. I definitely wouldn’t consider this bike to have bad design, maybe if you presented a better design I would rethink that statement, but I haven’t seen anything out there.
I should also note that I haven’t found many people having trouble standing the bike vertically due to the design of the rear end, it probably only takes about 20lbs of force in my experience and Tara our videographer stores hers in her apartment standing up and she’s pretty petite.
I do think the derailleur S10 version is great, but the S00 with a belt is very low maintenance easy to operate and a great way to go for this type of bike. It does weigh a little more, but I think that slight penalty is totally worth it.
Last point I want to mention. The kickstand on the bike probably weighs about 5 lbs. you could save that weight with a more basic kickstand, but I don’t think given the choice most would give that up.

I was thinking of the Benno Boost, another mid tail cargo bike that has same Gen 4 motors, can carry 2 kids, and has excellent cargo/ hauling capacity. (Most cargo delivery riders I see are towing trailers now, and not carrying ~200lb on frame!) Benno's top spec model weighs 58lb, GSD mk2 top spec model is 88lb ! I hear what you say, but still feel it is over-built. In some ways that's a "nice problem to have" but for many of us who need to wrangle bikes into elevators or apartments, or just need to flip the tail around on a sidewalk to lift it closer to a street locking post, weight is a real issue.
Aside from that, which model? Sure the belt drive is sweet, as are those amazing internal hubs, (Enviolo/ Rohloff) but... at a serious price bump. The S00 is very good for $1000, you are right, but I still think the base model is the deal here. YMMV of course!
@@Merriman-bn9ge looking at the boost specs, 60kg payload on the rack, vs 200kg (inc. rider) on the GSD. The Boost seems more comparable to the HSD.
These are some great comments. Sorry for missing the earlier reply. Keep in mind that the GSD includes many features like a double kickstand, second battery, suspension fork, seatpost and frame lock. All of these add up quickly.
I do agree that the boost is more in line capacity wise with the HSD however the Boost can carry two child seats which is a major difference.
First of all, congrats for the video, very useful and well done. I like both the Tern GSD and the R+M Multicharger; in your opinion which one would be better to carry two kids (2 and 4yo now, but also when they are 5+)?
I have the same question. Just with twins at 2 and a half years old. Also, at which age would you recommend switching from the childseats to these padded seat options? 🤔
@@julew7003 I have an Argo, so my kids have been sitting side-by-side. But they are 3.5 and 5, and I think they're ready to sit on a tandem padded seat. They haven't fallen asleep on a ride in a long time now (that's the major concern with younger kids in my view).
Thanks for the extremely informative videos. In your opinion, is it more comfortable for a small-to-average sized adult to ride in the front of something like the R +M Load 60 or on the back of the Term GSD?
Thanks! I think comfort depends on a few factors, the Load will give the passenger a better view and be a bit more comfortable due to the suspension, but the GSD might be a bit more comfortable with the leg room. I hope this helps. I love both bikes, but I ride the Load most often.

Are all of the frames functionally the same? If I got a lower spec frame with a ten speed derailleur could I update to a belt drive system later?
Do you think the enviolo is enough for SF type hills, or would you go with the R14?
I think it should be fine with the new cargo line motor. You might go up a little bit faster with the R14 but it’s not gonna be a dramatic difference.

We have been pleased with our Yepp Maxi. It has worked from the time our daughter was just over a year old (on our non-electric bikes) till now as a six year old who currently one pound below the weight limit.
The five point harness is very much like a car seat, and she is used to that. The straps don't have a sternum clip, and when she was itsy bitsy, they tended to fall off her shoulders sometimes. I made a sternum clip out of some ribbon and snaps. When she was little, she also could wiggle her feet free of the foot cups. (She liked to kick Daddy to make him go faster.)
We added the running boards to our S00 so that she could climb up and into the seat on her own (while I held the bike.) We skipped the clubhouse because that seemed like an obstacle to her climbing in. We keep the seat in the most forward spot. This lets her use the seat handle as a hold on and my body as a wind break.
We just imported a Qibble Junior seat from Holland. We decided on this because it has a chest strap. If she were more confident (she has a disability that affects her balance) we probably would have done the Captain's Chair.

Oh, just nyloc nuts on the frame lock, great :S I'm sure the ground rack will enjoy the new chain and frame lock.
I think most won't use this as the only lock. If you did want to do that and prevent someone from removing the lock and your wheel you could add a front axle lock like Hexlox or Pitlock to the front fork.
If only I could get this with a high torque Bafang M620 motor.... But I guess it would lead to a lot of premature wear on driveline components not used to that much torque. It would necessitate the Rohloff hub.
What are the main benefits of the R14 compared to CVT on the R00? I understand it's a wider gear range, but why does that make a difference for an ebike? Is the shifting more responsive? How about maintenance and longevity? Do the R14 features justify the significantly higher price?
Great question Kyle! I actually made a video about this which I’ll list below, but basically the R14 is more efficient with a wider range of gears and the Enviolo is possibly easier to use and very smooth. The R14 requires an oil change every 3000 miles and the Enviolo needs new cables overtime. I think the R14 is great for those who want the more sporty feeling of a derailleur with the lower maintenance of an internal hub. Most will choose the Enviolo in my experience and personally I’m a huge fan of it, but mostly for ease of use.

I have early version of S10 GSD and am very impressed with the braking power even fully loaded.
I agree, the brakes on these bikes are very powerful and the tires have great grip so the stopping capability is pretty great.
Is it possible to retrofit front suspension forks on the older models? The bumpy ride is really the only thing that bugs me. Otherwise, a great bike.
As far as I understand it might be physically possible, but it's highly discouraged. I would recommend running the front tire at a slightly lower pressure and adding a suspension seatpost.
Out of all the options for the GSD including the 1 and 2nd generations what would be most suited for carrying shopping and a toddler up a steep hill? We have been looking into getting a GSD but I'm struggling to understand what would be best for our situation.
Any of them would work really well actually. The Gen 2 will have slightly more torque though so it would technically be better for climbing hills.

The Benno doesn’t have a front suspension , which is a deal breaker as far as I am concerned.

The resale value is pretty good. I would buy it, enjoy it and maybe upgrade in the future. They are awesome bikes and 8 months is a long time to wait. The new bikes do have some great updates though.

The S00 is available in Beetle Blue and Rhino Grey which is fairly light Grey. On a single battery most should see on average around 30 miles, but a second battery would double that.

Although it might be physically possible it’s highly discouraged. The stem is not made to carry that weight and force unfortunately.

The new Atlas stand, it seems to be narrower than the previous stand. Do you feel that it is wide enough for stability on the left-right balancing?
The prices are now confirmed. Regarding the kickstand, it seems very stable and the fact that it locks seems to improve this function.

You say that it is at a cheaper price point but it still costs £4200 to $5200 in the UK, well outside of the reach of those who would be able to make the best use of them.
There are cheaper bikes on the market, but most of them don’t compare in quality. If this is your primary mode of transportation it’s actually not so bad. We would love to see lower priced options, although Tern does also offer that.
Just to make sure. Video has bike prices at $400 less. Did pricing go up due to covid, and will prices go back down?

I'm confused... I thought that the bigger kid must go first, for stability issues. Is that right?
Can you remove the telescopic seatpost and install a fixed size and probably more durable aftermarket part? Especially when one is above the max riders weight. I guess this and the handlebar stem are the most "critical" parts regarding riders weight? I don't care about higher wear+tear but don't want to end in the ER or on the graveyard due to some catastrophic failure.
Yea, I have the 2017 model but I'm sure it's the same just like other bikes. The telescopic/suspension seatpost is just like any other seatpost. The base is fixed so I'm pretty sure you can just take it out, read the size of the seatpost and then replace it.
You can definitely do that. The inner diameter is 34.9mm but you could run a more common 31.6mm with a shim. The 34.9mm would be the strongest though.
If this had a throttle it would be the absolute perfect car replacement bike. Really a spectacular and high quality bike, but being able to throttle into an intersection from a stop is so incredibly beneficial, and as someone with a bad knee being able to take a full-out break from peddling for a short stretch if it's giving me trouble is really valuable in a daily vehicle. As a short person, the fact that this cargo bike is set up so low is amazing, most are too tall to be practical or safe for people like me, and the dual battery range is incredible. Honestly the throttle thing is the only thing I can even hold against this bike, and I know it's because of the mid drive so I understand why it's not a feature, but if they could figure out a way to incorporate a throttle to make a class 2 version of this bike, it would honestly be perfect for me in every way.

The standard motor is very fitting, but maybe we will see this in the future. I know many have asked, but they are definitely not struggling for sales.
Would love if this had the speed motor, especially since it also offers 85nm now on that model as well.
The HSD is now Class 3.

You could also buy loads of other things. Fortunately for Tern there are plenty that see the value in what Tern has to offer and they are leaning into that. They could make cheaper bikes, but instead they choose to try and make the best bike they can. There are plenty of brands trying to make the cheapest ones and their customers suffer when it comes to service, safety and support.

So, I bought a Tern GSD and it is still within it's warranty period. There was a problem with the lights (lights switched off every time I pressed the brakes) and the bike had to be sent back to Tern for repair.
1 month later, the bike is still at Tern. I called the distributor for Tern in Belgium (Hartje) and the guy pretty much asked me why I was calling and what did he expect me to do about my bike being in service. He also said that I shouldn't expect my bike back before some time next year because they are busy and have a lot of bikes to repair. HE WOULD NOT EVEN TELL ME WHEN NEXT YEAR I COULD EXPECT MY BIKE BACK.
This is a bike that cost Euro 6500, still in warranty and which we used to use daily fro dropping our kids at school. It should not take 2+ months to repair - especially since apparently what is needed is to replace the internal wiring.
I didn't pay this money just to have it sitting in a repair facility in Germany.
I would recommend connecting with Tern directly. They are usually pretty responsive. You likely need your brake cabling replaced.

@@DucksNuts.they are great bikes. The problem was the distributor in Europe. I definitely would not reco buying this if the exclusive dealer is Hartje where you live. The shop I bought the bike from was very sympathetic but nothing they could do in this situation.
If the distributor where you live is responsive, then it's not a bad option for a car replacement.

could you guys emphasize the making of a 45kph version? i dont get, why they wouldnt make one, since that makes any motorcycle obsolete and makes even more sense for bike messengers going through an entire city all day :)
From my understanding feel as though it's best to keep the bike at the standard speed since it's often marketed as a child carrier and there can be safety concerns there.
read the room man, buy a moto if that's what you want, I don't know a lot of people who can corner at crit speed on narrow paths with 300 pounds of stuff. Piloting a bike is an art, NO ONE can tell me they have the reflex to handle this unless they are crit specialists... more torque simply means you take off faster at the red light, not burn it like messenger. This thing kills at head on 45 kph ffs

This one is pretty low maintenance since it’s a coil spring fork, but I do understand your perspective.
me too. I guess that folks complaining about the lack of comfort of the GSD Gen 1 just haven't figured out the benefits of running their tires on lower pressure.

Absoluut niet vreselijk vanuit mijn perspectief. Ik denk dat er nog vele anderen zijn die het ook met mij eens zijn. Gelukkig hoeven we het niet allemaal eens te zijn. Dat zou eigenlijk vreselijk zijn.
Smaken verschillen, het lijkt me een geweldig pralktische fiets voor alledaags gebruik in een gezin met meer dan 1 kind. Groot voordeel vind ik dat de kinderen er zelf in kunnen gaan zitten. Zal veel rugpijn kunnen voorkomen bij (groot) ouders.

What does this mean?
The very small sign made it hard to find and I almost got bit by a vicious dog next door,then after ringing the door bell many times …. The person made me feel like i needed a appointment to be there.

There was a lot to cover on this bike. We could make the video shorter, but from my experience most people value the detailed explanations. The views and comments seem to indicate this, but I am certainly open to other ideas.
