    Would be hilarious if Chris is finally released from prison, decides to take a trip to the mall to see how times have changed, and it turns out that even though it's now a ghost town, he's still banned, and is promptly apprehended by security and escorted out.

    It's sad and almost unreal that Chris Chan is now in prison and has been for over a year (going on 2) and the mall is dying. Something something, changing times.

    It’s sad to see this place in decline - until fairly recently, it was in pretty good shape, if the CWCki is anything to go by. Still, its association with CWC means that even when the time finally comes for it to be dismantled and replaced with something else, its legacy will live on in corners of the internet! Among the famous ‘Christorical events’ to happen here are the Tale of the Crazy Pacer, Chris’s date with Emily and the appearance of the Man in the Pickle Suit, Chris smashing his PS3 at home then coming to the mall to expect a cash payout, and most famously, the “DON’T CALL ANYBODY!” incident of December 26, 2014.

    I live in this area and can only imagine the impression it leaves on visitors to see Fashion Square in that unkempt state... and to be known as the "Chris-Chan mall", holy moly. I've seen malls in far worse condition on Dan Bell's channel, but it still is a poor impression to people who visit.

    Really a shame what happened to this mall. It used to be toys and games, now it is just clothing and other crap. I remember there used to be a really nifty fellow that would walk around. Real nice and friend, hung out near the Pac-Sun and wore a good looking striped little number. Wonder where he is now.

    This makes me sad, my mom, who has now passed, worked at that sears for 16 years before she finished her degree. I spent so much of my childhood sitting in the employee lounge or running around the mall, fantasizing about all the cool things we were too poor to buy. In 2022 I worked in that spirt Halloween, and the entire store was decaying, the employee lounge was gutted, which was difficult for me because it was one of the biggest memories I have of time with my mom.

Great hair stylist 💈. Fun fact: this same Charlottesville VA mall was a location in a Tom Clancy novel. 📚 Plot: Islamic terror groups stage mall shooting attacks.

    This is my mall. I could probably tell you every store that was in here 15 years ago. Being in there is the biggest slap of nostalgia ever and it’s embarrassingly sad to me to go in there now and see how dead it is. Belk, bath & body works, and build a bear are still going strong. The tiled floor makes me think of being a kid.
    Leggett is correct, that was friend’s family’s store.

    To answer the question at 12:35, I believe why malls are dying is due to ownership. This mall is absolutely gorgeous and for it being the only mall in the area, it should be doing great. The city I assume has some control, they could try if they really wanted to. Pennsylvania is really hurting on malls considering Namdar pretty much took over the PA malls like Chambersburg, Logan Valley, etc and also considering they just purchased my childhood one in Western Maryland. Not all malls are dying tho, but the ones that are is just because of poor ownership and lack of caring.

    Wallie, thank you for this video. I haven't been to this place in over 30 years. It's so interesting to see how much this mall has changed since my childhood. I have to say, growing up the mall looked far better in its early to late 80s form. Just remembing how busy the mall used to be on a Saturday, and the massive arcade this mall had next to JCPennys. It's sad to see it in this state, but not surprised.
    I hope you get a chance to swing through Texas at some point, there are a few malls here that are definitely worth checking out. Rolling Oaks in San Antonio and how badly deteriorating the closed Sunrise Mall in Corpus Christi is just to name a couple.

  • @hannakinn
    @hannakinn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So disheartening to see this mall is so dead now. I don't live in the area but always stop there on the way home from visiting my mom in Virginia. It's about the half way point between my mother's home in south cental Virginia and my home. I go in that mall now every year or two, it used to be every 6 months. It's been 2 years now since I was there and goodness it's a lot more dead now than it was on my last visit. There is/was a Chinese take out sort of place in there with a few tables. I liked to eat there and then go into Belks and walk around in the mall a bit before resuming my trip home. It looks almost as bad as the dead and dying malls in my Mom's town and in the towns I used to live in in Maryland and close to Maryland in Pennsylvania.
    The mall in Danville, VA was the closest to my mom's small town, it's almost dead now although I wonder if there may be hope for it to revive somehow due to the casino opening and tourist coming to Danville to gamble. Security Mall in Maryland was where I had my first jobs I heard it was dying or dead, Columbia Mall in Maryland was where we used to love to hang out as teenagers is dying, we used to go to outdoor concerts at the Lake in Columbia and hang out at the mall, it was also a mall we loved to visit on Saturdays just to go somewhere different from our regular malls. Cranberry Mall in Westminster Maryland which was stupidly renamed The Town Mall or something dumb is dying. As a stay at home mom in the mid 80s that was my mall, it was like my main street. My son grew up going there, spent a lot of his childhood there and had his first 2 jobs in that mall. I also used to go to the North Hanover Mall in Hanover, PA. It used to be grear to drive up there with a friend when we both had young babies. It was fun to push our children around, shop and get lunch. That mall is also dying, it's so so dead now, I almost cried being in there the last time I went. Another mall I used to be in all the time in the early 1980s was Hunt Valley mall in Maryland. I worked in Hunt Valley and used to eat lunch in the food court there and sometimes skip lunch to play video games in the arcade with my coworker. I used to shop there after work too before going home. That mall was torn down and turned into an outdoor type of shopping complex. Later on I worked in Owings Mills, Maryland and used to love to go to the really beautiful Owings Mills mall. That was a very nice mall in it's prime. Going there to shop and eat was a great experience until it became too dangerous in the area to go there. The last time I went there my supervisor at work was really distressed to hear I'd gone there, thinking I'd get robbed or carjacked. Owings Mills mall was torn down and I still think that was awful. The food court there was beautiful, I miss going there. Harbor Place and The Galleria(?) Mall closeby in downtown Baltimore are really dying or dead now too. My ex and I used to go there when it was safe to do so back before the assaults and the unruly gangs made it unwise to go there very often. It got to be a place to avoid at night. People used to make jokes about all the floaters found in the harbor there.
    It's terribly sad for me to see all of these malls dying, dead or gone. They were a part of my life. The first mall I ever visited a lot was Tarrytown Mall in Rocky Mount, NC. It was closed after a flood, never restored and then demolished after it sat deteriorating for years. I have a lot of memories from that mall. My father was a part time mall cop there. We had family reunions inside the mall. My girl scoup group sold cookies inside the mall. Our art from elementary school was on display inside the mall. The church choir I was in sang at the mall. For 2 years that mall was really a big part of my childhood.
    Watching malls die is sad. The nostalgia is real the sadness is too.😢
