Thank you Art Gallery Explorer for this super video of Frank Auerbachs paintings. One of the great artists who transcends passing trends and fashions. RiP Frank.
I wasn't very familiar with his work, so thanks for introducing him in such a context. Those landscapes were stellar. What a show for a private gallery.
Another great post. Although thick paint has been out of fashion with younger artist I have loved his thick juicy paint application and his beautiful use of color for many years. Looks like a stunning exhibition. Sad to lose him he was a pinnacle of the art world. Thanks
Thank you once agin - I like the thickness too but find his contemporary Leon Kossoff a bit TOO much - it is almost 4d thickness. I hope younger artists are tempted.
Quite one of the very best art videos I have seen in a long while. And then for it to be devoted to Frank Auerbach was an absolute joy. Insightful comments from the presenter who clearly ( like myself ) admires this great artist. What a group - Bacon , Freud , Kossoff & Auerbach. What pleasure they have brought but coupled with superb observation & truthfulness. When will we see such a cohort again? Thank you for putting this video together. Booking my train ticket now !
Really hope you enjoy the show. and find it as Intimate and powerful as I did. Check the opening times before December 7th 2024. It was a rich generation, wasn't it!? Maybe combine with the Bacon show, if you haven't seen it? Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow! I would never have got the chance to see this show live but you have offered us the next best thing. Thank you from Australia. I loved it and I’m sure I will rewatch it again and again. As one tiny note of feedback, I really appreciated your scanning / panning details of the paintings, (wow😮 ) and I would’ve loved the image to linger for a few more seconds after the movement stopped. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for taking the time to comment and will definitely take that on board and slow it down a bit. I kept extending it by a few seconds but can see I need to slow it further.
Excellent show as usual. I could feel there’s much more to those paintings than just the visual . I couldn’t imagine living with the fact that both your parents were murdered by the nazis let alone one had to flee to live in another place because of that. A living nightmare . Good choice of music
Thank you so much for commenting. I agree that shadow can't help but hang over his work at a level. He was so young when he came here, too. If you look at his Charcoal Heads works from the 1950's, they are visceral. I always think that his London Works document a journey towards hope from the building sites showing the rebuliding of a war torn city to some scenes about home.
Great works - a labour of love. I like the way he lays it on thick but not too thick (like Kossoff at time). Thank you for taking there time to comment on this one.
Must be incredible living for all that time and knowing your legacy continues after your death, forever immortalised in his paintings !😍 That’s the sort of legacy I’d like to leave too!
Thank you, Wendy. Very much felt melancholy because he had been producing great work until the end but also this felt a celebration of his life and work.
The paintings are STUNNING!!! What use of colour, line, shape and texture!!! I am amazed and dazzled at his talent, a big Thanks ❤for this wonderful clip, Cheers, Caroline from Australia ❤❤❤
Thank you very much for showing us these beautiful works, I was very saddened to learn of the death of Master Auerbach, I will dedicate my next exhibition to him
On the third day of Advent, a red squirrel..card, but also the gift of a free day. So off to see the Auerbach-Portraits of London! Currently, my favourite painting to go into the imaginary pictures from an exhibition house, is Looking Towards Mornington Crescent Station. Night. 1973. Thank you George, I would have missed this exhibition and venue...treat. Wendy
That work was lovely - a feel of dusk moving into night. Isn't it such a cosy gallery? I loved the way you could be in a room on your own with two or three works and follow the flow of the exhibition across the spaces. I am really glad you caught it.
Great video! If you ever get the opportunity (and feel so inclined), please do a video on the work of George Rowlett, who I believe Auerbach was a fan of. Wonderful heavy impasto paintings!

A really good showing from Offer Waterman. I love these works too.

It’s great. It just needs a moment for us to appreciate the final section of the pan before it cuts. 🙏
Thanks for that , great show. Good choice of music too. Well done
Thanks John - always a bit nervous with the music as want the art to do the talking.

Thank you, Love the thick impasto and expressive marks. So beautiful how Frank has translated his unique perception of London on to canvas.

Stunning... Thanks for sharing. Loved the choice of music with this episode, too.
Thank you - always nervous with the music because of different tastes!
What an incredible artist. Thanks so much for posting this. I'm going to rewatch your other two videos on him and enjoy his amazing work.
Thank you James. There has been a series of amazing shows featuring his work over the last two years.
Must be incredible living for all that time and knowing your legacy continues after your death, forever immortalised in his paintings !😍

Aim to get there by being true to your artistic vision. Let me know when you show stuff!
Thank you for this vlog. A visual treat, but sad time.

I will definitely look for show featuring his work. Thank you for recommending.
I don't think I'll have chance to see this, so thank you for sharing. I absolutely adores his work, and it truly is a massive loss to the art world 🩷
I agree - a big loss. Thank you for watching.
