    Another tragic thing about this death, is that Bardo's name will forever be tagged to Schaeffer's which I think was his ultimate goal, such as with Chapman/Lennon.

    It seems like Rebecca was just someone trying to become a working actor and wasn’t caught up in being a famous celebrity. It’s just such a tragic story. You got a wonder how the private investigator and his brother feel knowing that they helped him commit that murder albeit unknowingly.

    • @garmtpug
      @garmtpug 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yes! I have to wonder why the brother thought that buying a gun for someone who had a previous disturbing history was a good idea. Especially since the dirtbag had already been turned down for a gun purchase. This type of thing should be against the law. In fact I’m pretty sure it is. Such a tragedy.

    My best friend from high school later became OBSESSED with Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. It was creepy because he was 20-21 at the time while the two singers were 15 or 16. He wrote letters to them many times. I don’t think he was disturbed enough to stalk them, but his obsession with them caused me to eventually stop talking to him. It just didn’t feel right for an adult - even a very young adult - to be so obsessed with girls in their mid-teens.

    • @brucejohnson9696
      @brucejohnson9696 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I think immature, socially awkward guys get obsessed with younger girls because they have a harder time connecting to women their own age(?) Not really sure, I'm just practicing without a license.

      The Schaffer case is mentioned in The Gift Of Fear by Gavin De Becker.
      When you're young in adolescence, it's quite normal to have celebrity crushes. However obsession in adulthood is rather sick indeed. It's a case of wanting someone unavailable you cannot have. There are groupies and then there are obsessed fans.
      Celebrities have no anonymity or privacy.
      For many people celebrities are societal role models.

      Indeed, "nobodies" don't get the press, but do get killed. It happens more often than many realize. And almost every woman has been stalked, sometimes unaware for quite some time. I don't know how one can know which stalkers will go right to killing, but all will eventually attack.

    This isn't the major issue often discussed about this case, but one of the saddest parts of this story for me has always been that Rebecca was an only child. Her parents lost their one and only. Not only did Rebecca die, but her parents didn't get to experience the joy of seeing their parenting efforts come to fruition as Rebecca matured. And as she had no siblings, her parents lost their only chance to do so. They didn't get to see her develop a career, pursue other artistic interests, marry, have children herself. They never had grandchildren. I think people who have lost their only child to murder have a very complex loss.

      Yea and on a related note there's direct contact now thanks to twitter and cameo and TH-cam. Seems like the barrier is growing thinner. That and influencer culture = the feeling of relatability to someone they barely know. Even if they realized the actor wasnt the character, they may delude themselves with thinking there's a friendship bx the celeb always "responds" to the posts. It's very strange. But once again as with many other killers, the cause is often being rejected or getting indignant and possessive over someone that doesn't "belong" to them. We need to figure out how to teach ppl that they aren't entitled to anyone bc there are so many ppl who have lost their lives just for saying no :(

      Back in 2006, I was fortunate enough to meet soap opera actress Kim Zimmer (Reva and "Guiding Light") back stage after a performance of the musical "Gypsy." As I was talking with her, a woman asked her if she called her co-star Robert Newman (Josh) by his character's nickname, "Bud." Miss Zimmer seemed a bit annoyed by this, but graciously answered the question. I just couldn't believe that someone would ask her something like that, but it was clear to me that woman's perception between reality and fiction was askew.
      Later, when I showed a friend the picture that had been taken of the two of us, he asked me if Kim Zimmer actually had cancer, which was Reva's storyline at the time on "Guiding Light." I was dumbfounded again. I really don't think that sort of thing is all that uncommon after that experience.

    I think that some of Bardo's fixation on Rebecca Shaffer, likely came from the fact, that she was at a stage in her career, where she was just starting out, she wasn't a huge star, so she seemed accessible and approachable to him, sort of like the next door neighbor or something. She wasn't surrounded by body guards, assistants, and wasn't living behind a gated estate. She also had personally responded to his fan letter, which someone close to her, told her was a bad idea, because fans tend to over exaggerate the "relationship" that they have with the celebrity. Just a sad situation. She could have possibly gone onto be a big star.

I was like, who in their right mind would want to be poor and famous?!😖 Your fame exposes you to completely crazy people, but now you have no resources to deal with them?! I would much rather be left alone to live my life, have financial security and help people as I wish without scrutiny.

    I like doctor's last phrase in this video very much. 💜 I would like to add to this case that the behaviour nowadays called "stalking" hasn't always had such a negative image and closeness to criminal actions such as murdering someone. In the Medieval Age it was called high courtly love and well accepted. Once it was done properly it was rather an art. Of course this kind of remote admiration needs to root in a mental stability that a person diagnosed as bipolar or schizophrenic rarely fully obtains. Mental health problems have become so widespread in modern societies that doctors last sentence is without a doubt true.
