"No time to waste”: Poilievre pushes Trudeau to recriminalize drug use in BC

  • A day after getting booted from question period in the House of Commons after calling the prime minister a 'wacko,' Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre continued to push the Trudeau government to quickly end a three-year pilot project in British Columbia that will decriminalize possession of small amounts of certain illegal drugs, including heroin, fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Trudeau responded that the government is working with the province after B.C. Premiere David Eby asked Health Canada to recriminalize the use of drugs in public spaces such as hospitals and parks.
“There is no time to waste,” said Poilievre, suggesting that six people die in B.C. every day because of overdoses.
Both Trudeau and Poilievre accused the other of playing politics when it comes to the opioid crisis in Canada.
Poilievre also demanded that Trudeau reject the city of Toronto’s request for an exemption from federal drug laws, which would see a small amount of illegal drugs decriminalized in Canada’s largest city.

Spare us the conspiracy theories. Conservative Benjamin Perrin, law professor and former legal council to Stephen Harper - has studied the opioid crisis and is openly critical of Poilievre's drug policies. Poilievre supports the war on drugs which has been an abject failure and helped precipitate the opioid crisis. Criminalizing people with substance use disorder doesn't work. Evidence shows that someone with substance use disorder is 50X more likely to overdose and expire if they are sent to jail. Don't be fooled by Poilievre!

Amazing how no one seems to know what’s Right and Wrong anymore. These puppets, acting for drug lords or for countries trying to infiltrate and weaken democratic societies, must be getting hefty benefits to put safety of kids and regular citizens at risk. Imagine how much worst the metro and downtown will be if hard drugs are legalized. Toronto streets are known for weed stench already, and it’s an odd day if you don’t see anyone out of whack on the subway on any given day. Good luck, Toronto!

Re-criminalizing drug use is just as stupid. We are trying to HELP people, not put them in jail. How stupid does PP think the Canadian public is? The whole reason to decriminalize is to keep addicts OUT of jail. That is not where they belong. If he wants to help them, incarceration is not going to do a damn thing to help them.

Hey everyone, instead of blindly allowing PP to pull the strings of your emotions why not read up a little on the subject.
Decriminalisation of heroin and other hard drugs has allowed addicts to be treated as patients. Users can seek help and are supported.
Just try for a moment to turn off your emotional reactions to things and think critically. (I know Pierre hates when his followers do this, but try). If you remove the criminal element in something you take away the organized crime system's control of it. Think of prohibition and the criminalization of alcohol, Al Capone, money and violence, all that. Not a problem with a proper control over liquor sales and decriminalisation of it.
Also the decriminalisation was towards possession of small amounts, not smoking crack in public. This has probably happened but Im sure it's rare. People will be addicts and die from OD whether its decriminalized or not. Statistically actually less will injuristictions with decriminalisation in place.

Please do this- my clinic opened a safe site in Calgary in a top notch facility under the NDP, it is now covered in graffiti, druggie and homeless lay about in the sidewalks and in the washrooms, urine is all you'll smell outside, trash all about.
It has gotten so bad they closed three entrances years ago, so now there is only one due to security concerns.
It has only become a magnet for the homeless, the junkies, and criminality for the area to save the feckless.
Pity the people who own property close by.

An approach of compassion? People killing themselves on streets in every city. Needles and drug covered tin foil in parks and playgrounds across the province. Ive seen people with pools of lighter fluid on fire inches from their tents and umbrellas with dozens of people walking right by a block and a half from new west police station. Thats a warped form of compassion. It breaks my heart.

Sure, if someone needs rehab, they might smoke up to desensitize from the drug but doing it at public... not condoned.
