FCPX: Using Draw Mask in Final Cut Pro

  • This video illustrates a way to use the Draw Mask effect to change the way a feature looks in your video.
    Steps:
    1. Establish start, end points with Razor Blade.
    2. Copy the clip and move the copy above the original in the time line with the start and end points lined up with the original clip.
    3. Disable the bottom (original) clip in the time line.
    4. Apply Draw Mask effect to the top clip in the time line (the copy).
    5. Set the play head at the first frame of the copy clip and draw a perimeter around the object you want to modify.
    6. Select Invert Mask in the inspector.
    7. Establish control points on the first frame of the clip.
    8. Step through each frame of your clip and adjust the mask with each frame. Check to see that the mask accurately tracks each frame properly.
    9. Enable the bottom clip and apply effects to it. Your effects should now "shine through" the hole in the mask.
