    Over a year later and I really appreciate having the wood chip paths that I have made here on farm. The higher traffic areas have held up really well and they add both aesthetic and functionality to the farm.

    Would love an update video. See how that wood chip road lasted. I've been learning from Gary's best gardening that a huge drought in Texas killed trees along the highway and they ended up pilling the wood chips from the dead trees alongside the highway. The next year it was all green around the wood chips because they held the water from the dew on cool nights. Another Gary tip is that soil is sand, silt, and clay and NOT compost. Compost is toxic poison to roots, sure they can grow in it for a bit but real permanent soil is sand silt and clay. Key thing is having the duff layer where fungus grows and trades the roots nutrients and roots give it sugar. the fungus connects all the root systems of all the plants. He has mentioned some farms with orchards were up on this and piled a foot of wood chips everywhere even up on the tree bark. Didn't matter and they never had to water their trees again. Pretty sweet. The rotting compost rots the roots and starves them of oxygen so it's important for any long term plant to be in actual real permanent soil. All the compost stuff should be on top. Pretty logical when you think about it. All the nurseries have been scammed by the academia mafia to start growing things in dead stuff so you can always wash off the dead stuff and plant in real soil...it's amazing I have seen my plants come back to life instantly when they get the oxygen back. When I get some land I'm going to go crazy with wood chips. But I would love to know how your's has held up over the last 7 years. Thanks man.

    John, thanks for following up on this! I'm glad to see it's working so well. I've attempted to contact 10 or so tree services in the area and they either don't answer their phones / email or they're not interested in bringing it out. This video has reinspired me to keep asking around. Thanks!

    Hi john,I use mulch in my vege garden for the paths in between rows,let them go for 12 months then dig them in and make the old paths where the mulch was the new beds.the wood chips are a untapped resource.great benefit to the soil and plants.

    Thanks so much for this! Been getting a lot of nay sayers so it's helpful to see a success. Sorry if you've addressed this in the comments, but do you have any hilly areas? Any thoughts on whether this will work on hills? Property slopes the entire length of the path/drive I want to cover. Can't take my x534 garden tractor down there if it's at all wet or damp from rain. Thanks for any insights!

    I used cypress mulch over a path my dogs made in back lawn as i was sick of it turni g to mud when it rains and mud walked in house, but ive searched youtube videos for a way to keep it in place when dogs run over, i know i need edging but i want them to be able to run without knocking there paws on edging, i thought of digging a trench as edging on both sides of path and filling the woodchips in and bordering it with mondo grass, its down a slope, any suggestions?

    Hey John, when you laid down the wood chips did you put any geo-fabric or plastic down before you put the wood chips down? Also, how is the drainage off the wood-chip paths after rain storms?

    • @farmmarketing
      @farmmarketing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't put any fabric or plastic though that is an option. I have a whole crap load of chips so I just put down a whole crap load of chips. I start with a 6 inch layer and then add more as needed. The thicker layer of chips combined with the constant traffic keeps the weeds down. If I had put fabric in the low-traffic areas I might now have as much grass. No fabric was cheaper though.
      As for rain drainage I find that they drain really well as they're on a bit of a hill. The porous nature of the chips allows the water to drain quick and then the chips help keep things from getting muddy.

  • @huntbz

    Did you do any plowing on the wood chip road or pathway? Curious how that worked out.

    • @farmmarketing
      @farmmarketing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't plow it. Well, that's not entirely true. I plow it occasionally but I lift the plow so it's about ab inch or so above the chip road. The chips would dig up easier if they weren't frozen together so I don't like to plow it too much or directly on the chips because then they all just get pushed into the grass.

    Hey John, have you seen this film: www.backtoedenfilm.com/ (free download at the bottom of the page link) There are a TON of benefits to the wood chips but I'd not thought about them for roads. Great usage for sure. I'll use that for sure at The Covering as we'll be building roads for tourism as well. Blessings...

      I live in a very wet area and my driveway was turning to muck. I had wood chips from the county tree trimmers dump 2 loads of chips in my driveway. They have been holding up fantastically, I'm no longer getting stuck in my driveway and my boots are clean when I get to the house. I absolutely recommend wood chips as a road base or driveway base.

    Gravel is a better idea. my soil is a mix of clay sand and rock after grating and compressing it I add gravel. Twice a summer I grade it with the tractor. every couple of years I add some gravel it isn't that expensive and you have a road that isn't muddy that is semi-permanent. broken down woodchips are good around trees but not great for weed control in gardens.

      depends how much you add. enthusiasts here in AZ are known to add 12". I did 4-6" and no weeds at all.
