He is a true vocalist, not a pop star, and I mean that as a true compliment. He sounds similar live or recorded because he isn't relying on mixing and auto-tune. to clarify, he never goes into falsetto in this song. The high parts you hear are all in his head voice ( which is different than falsetto). In head voice with proper technique ( which it sounds like he is using) a talented vocalist can belt with no damage to his voice. Damage is only caused if you aren't using proper technique.
Hes actually using both ...as a voice coach I'm beyond familiar.. He's good but def over hyped ...he's clearly a early Stevie wonder/Jackie Wilson student but has that modern john legend edge for those who like that style.... I enjoy him but he's only seemingly amazing because of the lack of great voices today....

Yeah that technique you can get away with singing any song and sound good. I have a strong false-setto so I can get away sometimes but wish I had a stronger head tone, but I'm just a lazy singer.

he's amazing. it's a rare think nowadays for a singer to actually sound like their recordings when they sing live in the whole auto tune era. sam smith has amazing vocals and definately sounded the same live as he did on his record.
Yeah sam smith is great. The reason some singers arent as good live is because at a concert it is too loud for them to go falsetto and sound good. Singers sound good at shows like this where everyone is quiet.

The audience can make a voice sound less powerful but you just have to look at Muse live and you'll know that the audience being loud doesn't stop a great, powerful voice from shining through. Or try a chaotic metal audience, Avenged Sevenfold's M shadows is great too

This is legit raw talent. No auto-tune, no background track. Just him, his voice, and the beautiful melodic instruments playing. He is a damned masterpiece on legs. For God's sake, there hasn't been a single song i've hated from him. What the hell. He's so amazing, it literally brought tears to my eyes. He doesn't even try and he's still so amazingly soulful. So passionate, so spontaneous, so refreshing. The words to describe how amazing Sam Smith is, is infinite. I hope he stays in the music industry for a long time. It's time for some real music in this generation.
I agree with most of your assessment. I will, however, disagree with you saying he sings without trying. He has so much talent that the effort does not show. That ease is because he knows his ranges for chest, head, and falsetto as well as phenomenal breath control. He makes it look easy, but try to sing it. I'm a pretty accomplished musician and this song is definitely not as easy as it sounds.

I think his popularity in the US speaks for itself. I saw him supporting Emeli Sande in April 2013 at the Manchester Apollo. He sang lay me down and I was transfixed. I knew then that he was going to be big.
Stay With Me has become super popular. A ton of my friends are totally obsessed with it, but none have heard any of his other songs. I like Stay With Me, but he has so many that need to be heard. I'm sure in time he'll gain the appreciation he deserves, but for now, it's a start. I absolutely adore him. I just bought his cd (: it's lovely. Listen to Like I Can if you haven't already. I understand your point, and in that case I can see why you might find it a bit sad, however you gotta remind yourself that it's a choice that person has made for him-/herself and our opinion about it shouldn't be relevant. I myself have recorded a couple of concerts, but I did it because my girlfriend really wanted to be at them, but couldn't, so I recorded some of it, so she could get a glimpse of it. I wholeheartedly agree though, that the best experience is without the phone, but we can't pretend to know the reasons as to why people decide to record.

JOEY M Sam is a low tenor, he's hitting those high notes in falsetto. A high tenor would be able to hit them in their natural voice
