This looks cool! Really nice to see the drive features are gain-compensated - it absolutely baffles me that this isn't a standard feature on every plugin.
IKR. Its not completely perfect, so you'll notice as you really increase the drive, the level will go down a bit (hence the Trim control), but its definitely much better than not having it, IMO!
Yeah would be cool to have a "auto gain" switch in Ableton's Utility device… wouldn't mind an extra device for that. Maybe it turns so successful that Ableton will officially integrate at some point. Wouldn't be the first time.
Me too! Its quite a fun challenge to design devices that feel like native devices, but still have a unique character. I always want my Max devices to feel like they just fit with everything else though.
Thank you so very much for sharing these. Simplifying the controls and choices is DEFINITELY going to help me figure the results rather than becoming confused by choices and parameters I don't fully understand.
Very simple and effective. Excellent video on these. Too many super producers trying to over complicate things these day. Simplicity = best results 👌🏻 Cheers
These look awesome; excellent work. I recently watched the talk you gave about building Max For Live devices, so I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on under the hood with these!
What a nice simple collection. Having a mono button directly in the stereo width device is so good, same like gain compensation with the drive… The filter is also nice (especially with the analog drive) but it would be nice to also have a Dual Filter for live performance :)
The filter is a dual filter! Or do you mean a combination filter that you can turn one way for highpass and the other for lowpass? That would be cool actually, I’ll have to make one of those.
@@ELPHNT Yes, one knob that combines the two. Pioneer DJM mixers have that for each channel (although they don't sound so nice like e.g. Allen & Heath)… For a live set that's quiet interesting and currently the only option i know of is to built an effect rack where you map one knob on the frequency of two e.g. Auto Filter devices…
@@ELPHNT If there would be a resonance or drive setting it could be a useful feature to allow the user to set this separately for both individually the Hi-Pass and the Lo-Pass side of the filter…
That’s not really something I’m super familiar with, but it’s probably pretty easy with the new Tuning Systems in Live 12, so I’d recommend looking at some videos for that.
Yes! Both the HPF and the LPF are totally bypassed when the filters are fully open. I always use to build a Rack like this with 2 Auto Filters and mapping their on/off switches, but its much nicer having it in a Max For Live device 😎
Bought the collection right ahead. Since then, Colour, Widen and Excite have become an essential part of my go to mixing tools. I don't crank em, always use em subtle and with intention. Especially when you have knobbing fatigue like me you just want to know a plugin that does "this" thing and that does it well. Thanks!
It'll probably show up organically in some future videos, I think 🙃 I've also got a video in the works which is a Max tutorial showing you how to build it from scratch.
@@ELPHNT The Soundtoys wrapper I experienced all the parameters and knobs on the contents: Decapitator, Little AlterBoy, Little Radiator and Radiator which cannot be used on my Live 12. The same thing happens to the Analog Obsession Wrapper. I hope you can help me.

Yo Tom! Great stuff in here, gonna check out them later. Quick question, what happened to "Essential Audio"? Got your Colour Compressor but it needs an update to VST3 or AU to work properly right? Any plans for that? I really love it but cant use atm since Live just crashes over and over.. 😢 /Big love from Jono in Sweden!
Essential Audio didn't work out unfortunately, and has since shut down 😢 We were just never able to generate enough interest in the plugins. Unfortunately this means there won't be any updates to Colour Comp, though I might end up building an M4L version in the future. I know that kinda sucks, so please feel free to drop me an email and I can sort you out with some free ELPHNT packs.
Does anyone know if there's a m4l lfo or divider for lfo that lets you sync slow lfo like the ohmforce stuff syncs to 256 but i haven't found a live device that can sync slower than 32 i know you can do slower unsynced but its bugging me to the point i might have to learn to create m4l devices anyway great stuf in here ✌️
Yes and no. Technically you could build something close to all of these things natively with Racks (except Colour, which has some custom distortion code), but I find Racks pretty dull and uninspiring. Part of making these for myself was to make something a little more engaging. Even so, mapping in Racks can only work linearly, so you're also restricted by that, whereas in Max you can define how controls and parameters behave in any way you like, so you'll find these devices are a little more 'fine tuned' than what you could build natively. P.S: Also worth pointing out a few things you think native devices might be doing, but aren't: Many people think Utility can do stereo widening, but it would be more accurate to describe that as a 'stereo balance' control. Widen applies something slightly more advanced that will let you add additional width, even to totally mono sounds. You also might think Filter could be easily replaced by Auto Filter, but the biggest problem Auto Filter has is that its always applying a slight amount of filtering, even when the cutoff is all the way down/up. This is most noticeable if you are, say, applying a highpass to your whole track (like you might do in a live siutation). Even when the filter is all the way down you will hear a noticeable drop in low/sub frequencies. Filter, on the other hand, totally bypasses the filter when the controls are all the way open, so its much better for doing full track filtering (its kind of designed mostly as a performance filter). So, again, yes and no 🙃
Thank you for this nice little "tools". I've got a problem with Filter. Used it on the Master, works fine in Ableton, but when the track is rendered the effect isn't there. Colour and Excite working fine on my Lead Bus and getting rendered without problems. Is this a Max for Live problem with the Master Bus or why did this happen? Never had something like this before. I'm on 11.3.25 EDIT: Found the problem. I automated if the Filter is on or off. If its always on it works.
I think it would be a good idea for the future to set the pay if you can for any amount. Id loved to have been able to pay a bit towards it however i dont have £15 to spare. I would of liked to have been able to atleast send a few quid your way rather than nothing!
I appreciate that - I would have liked to have made it ‘pay what you want’ but it requires a little more backend work, so I just figured it’s either pay what I think the pack is worth, or grab it for free 🤷♂️ And I’d rather you just grab it for free anyway, rather than pay a small amount 😊 You can always grab another pack or something else cheaper in the future.
Well...maybe. Simplified tools become increasingly useful as you get better at mixing. I know I can accomplish the same or more with Roar, for instance, but less interface using "colour" will save time. especially with built in gain compensation. That alone makes at least that module useful as hell. In fact, I was thinking about making a simple saturator with built in gain compensation myself on M4L then pop into youtube and see they just did it for me.
