ive been watching videos on rewiring boats for over a year and today found your video. this is the first one that shows pulling wires down a conduit. thank you sir! I was surprised to see you cutting the cable before pulling and not pulling straight off the reels. My boat is in a marine environment so I use Ancor tinned cables for everything. great video. I'll be watching your others too soon.
Running wires through a boat can be tricky at times and thanks for sharing this video! Your attention to detail and the tips and tricks that you provided are really helpful! Thank you sir and hope to see you out on the water catchin some nice ones!
Yes with all the new technology everyone with need to know how to run new cables boats. Because the new units need more power to work right. I'm glad the video helped.
This was an excellent video. I was having trouble running my wires because of the location stuff in the channel and couldn’t get the wires ran so now I know how to do it. I use a fish tape but it wasn’t enough. Thank you so much it was very helpful
I glad I could help. Good luck with running the cables. Plus remember to leave a pull string or a pull cable in there for the next time you need to run cable.
Michael great video bud. Have a 2007 Ranger 520VX similar to ya 205 that imma bout to do the same thing. Running 2 12” Lowrance Carbons. Great video. Assuming I’ll use the old wires to pull my new wires with and get the pull rope set up then too.
That is the first thing you need to do. I just recently up graded the 10g wire to 8g. 10g works but with all the talk about the Sea Clear wiring harness which is 8g wire I just moved up to 8g.
You can also just tape the new wire to the old wire and then pull the old cable out and this way you have already run the new cable as it comes out. Easy Peezie
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Only question: why didn’t the connectors with solder in it work for you? I’ve already bought them and was ready to go. Will stay old school if it is better
Awesome video very glad you showed others how to always have a pull string available because you never know what you will add at a later time and saves a lot of cuss words and maybe a divorce lol. Those circles are called ring terminals I am also in the electrical industry but I sell all that wiring and terminals etc
You can find a fish tape at Homedepot and the pull string. The pull rope that I use was from a electrical supply store and it’s called mule tape. But that a lot of money for a bucket of mule tape when you only need a 40ft of it. I say get some string from Homedepot that ok size and use that. Good luck!
I did notice that my graphs did not blink and cut off when my battery was getting low. That was the big reason I did the upgrade. I think the graphs ran a little faster maybe. I know the did boot faster. But that was the improvement I seen. Plus my graphs are older units. I hope that answered your question.
@@michaelyoucanfixthat the new helix just shut off when the battery get to a certain point, they warn you right before they turn off. Do you know what I should do if I’m picking up static when trolling motor is in spot lock?
@@crappienaterfishing1198 that’s a good reason to run separate power cables for each graph. It will cut out the interference from other units and your trolling motor. This is what they call clean power. They have wiring kit to do this but they are about $250 to $300. The biggest one that the pro use is call seaclear power. Here is the link seaclearpower.com/
Good Info & demonstration Micheal. I also have a Ranger but it`s an older model . Where do you get the pull strap I don`t have that but can you also use the old tried & true fish tape thru the conduit tube to attach the wires??
Yes you can use that. That is what I used to install the pull string to begin with. But you want a pull string left in the conduit for the next you have to install wires. Because it’s always a next time. But you can use any type string that wouldn’t brake to easily. Home Depot should have something that will do.
@@horacelee880 I install computer network cabling for living. The string is call mule tape. You can only get that supply places like Gray Bar or you should be able to order it online. But you just can’t walk into Home Depot or Walmart and pick it up.
Great informative video. What did you use originally to snake the wires. I want to run 10 gauge wire up the port side for a dedicated line to hummingbird and 360 to a separate battery. Will I get interference if I go up the port side. It only has two battery wires for trolling motor in that conduit. Or should I just go up right side conduit?
I used a metal fish tape to run up the conduit first. Then I tie the pull string to the fish tape and pulled I back through the conduit. And make sure you tie more pull string on for you will always have a pull string in place. Good luck
Thankyou boss man. tell me how you got the string in there initially. Do you recommend a cable snake? Ive got to feed three 10 gauge wires from the back to the front for a Lowrance live target.Im adding 3 wires. not replacing any wires. Also, The panel where the throttle lever is at, does it come off? Thanks for the video!
I used a fish tape to get that string in there the first time. A fish tape is the same as the cable snake. But if you do not have either one. Go to Harbor freight, they have the fiberglass wire running kit. It is two foot sections of fiberglass rods that you screw together. You can push that down the side of you boat and tape you cable on to that. Then pull them through. But don’t forget to put a pull string in they to for the next time. That throttle panel will not come all the way off without removing the throttle lever. But you can see behind it. But should not have to remove that.
The fuse in the back is mainly because that’s the way the connection block came. You had to put fuses in to make the connections but it would help if you had a big power surge from charging or lightning while charging. But that the reason for the fuses in the back.
Are you using a marine grade wire? I was told to try and use something other then copper based wire due to a chance of corrosion? I bought some 8 gage wire from the big box stores that has the copper strands of wire but have not used it yet due to the potential of corrosion. Any help on the specifics of it Thanks
John, I don’t see any problem using copper strand wire. I have not had any corrosion. It you cut any wire on your boat right now. You would is copper strand wire used in you whole boat. So use they wire you have.
On the top and the bottom of the fuse block you are places where your main power lead and ground wires connect. You would run a ground wire from the ground side of the battery to bottom of the fuse block for ground and power wire from the power side of the battery to the top of the fuse block to get power to all the fuses.
I I can’t send you a video to this link but I don’t have it grounded properly hope that is the issues and I going to run dedicated line for my live scope also
@@jacobyaden1376 Yes, you have to have it grounded or it will show real grainy and not a good picture. Plus you have to have good size power cable also to give it the power it needs. At first I ran 12 gauge wire for my units but after a little research found out that might have not been larger enough size. So I went back and ran the 10 gauge wire you see in the video. The boat’s wiring my not be good enough for more that one unit. You need clean power and grounds for your units to show clear and work fast a possible. As for the half moon you are talking about. Im not sure of what you are talking about on that?
I’m pretty new to boating. I’ve never ran wiring in a boat. I appreciate the video...very informative. My question is, how did you run the original pull rope from the stern to bow.

No, a 10 gauge wire in a 16 gauge connector.
I can tell what u do for a living just from the mule tape and scissors.
Not many people have mule tape, right?
Ring lugs
If that boat was to be used in salt water, you would want a tinned type wire.
