This song has a great mood. It is about a troubled relationship between two lovers. He loves the other person but because of the conflict between them, he cannot live with them or without them. Or it would be painful to stay, but also painful to go. 😕
I had a marriage like that. Didn’t end well, but we are friends now and I still love him, just in a different way. But it was an incredibly painful split and took me 2 years to get over it. And he is a wonderful dad to my son (who was his stepson from the age of 5) and I love him for that alone, he has no legal obligation to my boy, but he regards himself as his father, and I love him for being there for him. Love you Tony.
Bono, U2’s singer, has said interviews that this song’s lyrics were inspired by his struggle to reconcile his nomadic life as an artist (which kept him touring & spending long hours in recording studios, etc, away from home) and his domestic life as a loving husband. In other words, he loves his wife & doesn’t want to be away from her, but at the same time he’s not willing to give up being an artist in a rock band and all that is required with that. At times these “two lives” felt in conflict to Bono, as he couldn’t live fully with his wife at home but he couldn’t live without her either. He smartly crafted lyrics that could be interpreted in the more common, relatable sense of a rocky or toxic relationship. Either way, in the end it’s about inner conflict-the battle within oneself. One of the all-time greatest songs. Love U2.
U2 and their ethereal haunting sound on display here. The build-up to that incredible Crescendo is one of the greatest and most moving recordings in rock history. They have always been on another level. Sometimes rather than trying to analyze their songs it's best to just feel them.
The best band of the last 40 years. you will grow to love them. All of their early work was about the troubles of politics in Ireland. Then came the Joshua tree which put them on another level. Greatness awaits.
U2 are an important band. Great music, great lyrics and always an element of truth. Check out other great songs by them: Pride (In the Name of Love), One, Ultraviolet, Every Breaking Wave (not the video, it's very distracting from the music), Vertigo, and an incredible dance track, Night and Day, from the Cole Porter tribute album, Zoo Station, Lemon... that can get you started, their catalog is very very deep!
Almost anything from The Joshua Tree or Achtung, Baby. My personal faves are Where the Streets Have No Name, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, and One. Any of them will blow you away, and there's plenty of others.
I was never the biggest U2 fan back in the day. I certainly appreciate them more as a grown man, now. I think "Where the streets have no name" would be my personal favorite U2 song.
U2 was a rock band from the 80’s!?!?! 😂😂😂. U2 has consistently been the biggest rock band of the last 37 years. And still… the biggest rock band in the world.
I think, this lyric expresses the dynamics of a marriage or a long relationship. It's not always easy, there are arguments and there are feelings that make you think. However, the decision to live together is never questioned.
U2 is a very interesting band, Highly political, especially in their early stuff you should check out New Year's Day or Sunday bloody Sunday. Or anything off War or Under a blood Red sky.
A lot of their live performances are good. Check out: Where the Streets Have no Name - Elevation tour in Boston Mysterious Ways - ZooTV tour in Sydney Every Breaking Wave - EMA Pride - Music video Sunday Bloody Sunday - Rattle & Hum
You will enjoy It's A Beautiful Day, and also love hearing Bono's voice on Sunday Bloody Sunday and his all-star collab for East African Famine Relief called Do They Know It's Christmas?
The relationship mentioned in this song is between Ireland and UK. There were conflicts between two countries regarding the north Ireland back to the 80'. Lots of U2's songs in 80" were related to political, religion, and humanism. Such as "One", my favorite song.
Anyone who has been involved in a toxic relationship understands exactly what Bono is singing about. You can't live with the person, and you dont want to live without him/her.
I am usually all about the lyrics as well as the music but in this case I just let the lyrics be because the music is so gorgeous and the change ups in his voice so moving that all I want to do is FEEL the song.
You have to listen to the band Boston and the songs foreplay/long time and more than a feeling you won't be disappointed it's what real rock perfection my parents had their albums their from the mid 70s and brad delp had the voice of an angel up right with freddie mercury from queen and the guitarist phenomenal and what makes it even more is that they made the album from a basement it's pure fire
I think he’s talking about the same person. You can love someone who is not good for you and who you argue with, but you can’t live with them can’t live without them.
It sounds like the usual relationship turned toxic. Reminds me of Led Zeppelin's "Ten Years Gone" where Plant's gf issued an ultimatum: "It's either me or your career!" And Plant picked his career, which turned out to be an excellent decision.
You said you were gonna go back into the musicality of this song once you finally forget about them lyrics. So what happened? 🙁 The flow of this song is so legendary. And I freaking looove that subtle drumm drop at the begging, but I think you missed it because you just paused it at that exact moment when you were asking about the lyrics. Damn. I'm still glad you did this one tho, because it's such an amazing song. Bono also sounds so good on this one. This one, "Where the streets have no name" and "Bloody Sunday" are probably best U2 songs. Oh and a tip: If you ever do "Where the streets have no name" avoid the official video at all cost! It is so distracting, you will get nothing from the actual song. Love your reactions!
Do urself a huge favour go out and get the album The Joshua Tree on vinyl preferably and listen to the album without interruption it's one of the greatest albums to ever b recorded, this track with or with out you is on this album❤
I've had precisely the relationship he is describing. Still to this day, i know we are better off apart but i would do anything to be with that person and there have been times when living without them didn't seem possible. Thankfully, i am still here. I'm not sure why you are confused as you are describing the meaning of the song to yourself...he is caught between two opposing positions...it is that simple. Not complex at all.

U2 is one of the most important Iconic bands ever. Sunday bloody Sunday is deep❤
Live version!!
Yes Live At The Red Rocks (1983) so electrifying.
The best band of the last 40 years. you will grow to love them. All of their early work was about the troubles of politics in Ireland. Then came the Joshua tree which put them on another level. Greatness awaits.

Listen to ONE by them... and then listen to the version Mary J Blige sang with him OMG!!!SO GOOD..
ANYTHING on U2’s “Joshua Tree” album won’t disappoint. Lead singer Bono’s vocals are so powerful and haunting.
Almost anything from The Joshua Tree or Achtung, Baby. My personal faves are Where the Streets Have No Name, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, and One. Any of them will blow you away, and there's plenty of others.

Impeccable rhythm section. The guitar sound running through is an E-bow, i think.
Nope. It's a special custom pedal made for The Edge called "infinite guitar" plus shimmer.
You....young man give me hope for the future is in capable hands 🫶
Michael Brook created the 'infinite guitar' which is responsible for the longer, sustainable notes featured in the song.
💙 U2 "One"
Great song U2 MAGIC Band.......
U 2 form their rock band in the 80's. "New years day" another great song.

Living with someone can be combative - living without that same person can be stressful because of the silence.
A lot of their live performances are good.

enjoy ur discoveries, u2 r worth v journey

The Edge is playing a hollow-body electric guitar. Rather common actually. Very popular among a wide range of guitarists.
This reminds lol of when I was 13 or 14 and we had to move away from 1 of my first "puppy loves". Oh man, yeah. 😢😊
😂😂😂
Next you should listen to She Moves In Mysterious Ways. It was one of their biggest hits. ✌️❤️
❤

This album was so big!!!! Like it but have heard it too many times. Great in concert by the way.
You maybe want to react to The Smiths , a very iconic British band of the 80ties . Or Depeche Mode?
Heaven knows I'm miserable now
People are people.
I think he’s talking about the same person. You can love someone who is not good for you and who you argue with, but you can’t live with them can’t live without them.
I think that the song is about the struggle to sublimate your own ego in a relationship.
The Joshua Tree launched U2 into superstardom....it was impossible to get tickets for this tour.. they sold out immediately!

I think that's a Gibson ES175. One of those Gibson hollowbody jazz boxes anyway
Edge is using a prototype of the Infinite Guitar in this song. Can hold a note… infinity
if i stay with you, it's bad. If i leave, i miss you. :Lose lose
U need ro react to their Live performance of "Bad" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday". I think it's in their Live Aid set if I'm not mistaken.
Do urself a huge favour go out and get the album The Joshua Tree on vinyl preferably and listen to the album without interruption it's one of the greatest albums to ever b recorded, this track with or with out you is on this album❤
When this album came out with it's 3 huge singles, it became almost impossible to get tickets!
Even harder during ZOOTV. First arena show I tried for sold out in 30 seconds. I slept on the sidewalk for 3 days to get tickets for the stadium tour.
Have you seen that conans new album is out?!

Thorn in your side , is Jesus
You're overthinking it
Don't get me wrong. I think you are one of the better reactors. But sometimes you don't have to overthink it.
