Southeastern Virginia. Sit on my back porch in the afternoon for 15 minutes. We hear them all the time. Sometimes we see a parent hawk give a young hawk flying lessons. I love these birds.

I just had a fantastic encounter with a red-tailed hawk earlier this afternoon. I was reading in my backyard in Berkeley, CA, and heard an unfamiliar calling. I immediately looked up from my book and met the gaze of a hawk that was perched on a tree less than ten feet away from me. My jaw literally dropped, as I'd never been so close to one before, and watched it for a few moments before it flew away. Oddly enough, the noise that it was made wasn't like any of the calls in this video. So I am now curious about what it may have been trying to communicate... In addition, I was recently in the U.S. Virgin Islands on the island of St. John and saw several flying right by the sea. Absolutely beautiful.
I played the video by my pool and the kids says there's that hawk. Then turned it off and then the real hawk sounded off in our woods and flew over us. Awesome! The grand kids were in awe.
Same here I think mine have young ones around and they come flying around every time I play the red tailed hawk call. It only takes minutes before they show
There is a hawk in the trees behind my house in east Anaheim across from Yorba Regional Park!!! That sound is what I hear!! There is also an owl! I’ve seen remains of squirrels and bigger prey. I’m in Southern California!!
I just went out with my dog in the backyard and heard this exact scream and I thought it was a eagle! 😂 I had to look it up to make sure my dog was safe, just figured out that it was a red-tailed hawk! Thank you! I’m located at Minooka, IL!!!
Sitting outside in my yard in the northwest suburbs of Chicago listening to this video and the two live red-tails that have been hanging around the neighborhood for the past 3 weeks. Beautiful to watch them soar. Saw one with a squirrel in its talons last weekend.
Yes! Clinton Township, Michigan! I was sitting outside as I am writing this. Two birds were circling opposite each other with a third distant from them. Realized that I had my 8 lb. white Chihuahua in my lap and that these predators can see extremely well ... lol. The cries matched the cries recorded here that play 1st. 😮
First time I heard one of these beauties in the wild was over Lake Wheeler in NC. The reverb through the valley was better than any recording I've heard on TV or film; nicely forested long, deep valley with plenty of reverb decay. I found this video because I just saw a red tailed hawk perched on my back porch railing this morning! This is in east Raleigh, next to a storm water catchment pond that was already a habitat for a gaggle of resident Canada geese, a couple eagles, some great blue herons, mourning doves, and many little songbirds. I welcome this screecher to my humble neighborhood!
I’m sitting on the balcony of my ninth floor condo in Richfield Minnesota across from a pond. We get regular visits from a pair of red tail hawks. I was playing the sounds and getting responses from both juvenile and mature hawks. A juvenile hawk flew a few feet from my balcony. Whenever I hear them I have to go out and watch them because I love to watch them hunt and sore on windy days. They are truly beautiful.
I live in Southeast Alabama and have seen and heard them here all my 53 years. I can say with confidence in recent years their numbers are back in full force! What was once a rare occurrence when I was a Young boy is now almost a daily routine to see them soaring above. Thanks for your videos.

Well I've got one or two hanging around my back yard watching the birds using the feeders I have out. Their sound is very close to what Blue Jays sound like so when the Jays make their calls right before swooping in to get their peanuts it spooks the other birds and they scatter.
Several years ago one was caught in our mosquito netting in the back yard. I heard the calls all summer as the hawk stayed in a local clutch of trees. I talked with him daily while he healed. His parents finally came to feed him and stay until he could fly. Since that time 'Blueberry ' has returned regularly..once even bringing his Mate to meet me! The females are a LOT lar ger than the males. This is in Powder Springs Georgia. West of Atlanta. I have since changed to bird friendly netting.
Wow, that's so cool! I live near Woodstock, Georgia, I've heard hawks soaring in the sky with that classic voice sometimes. But I've never come across one at a close distance or spotted one in my backyard though!
An internet friend in Tampa, FL posted a pic of a hawk that sits on her fence almost every day. I looked it up and it was a red shouldered hawk and it was compared to a red tailed hawk to show differences. I live in Sequim, WA and usually see red tailed hawks here. Had one perching in a nearby tree just yesterday. Can always identify them when soaring over the fields because of their beautiful red tail. I've only heard them a few times over the years. Right now I hear the owls every night. Thanks for the video!
Rescued one in Western Maryland actually. Was surprised at how dull the talons were in comparison to other birds of prey. He chilled in my back window while I took him to a rescue to be checked out and the released back where I found him. It was an awesome experience (though admittedly very dangerous)to handle that beautiful bird.
Thanks for posting this video, especially including both the adult and juvenile calls. Next door neighbor got some chickens, which I guess are also known as red tail hawk BAIT. Lots of red tails hanging out around my house now. There is a juvenile red tail that is squawking up a storm out my window, but I wouldn't have known for sure what it was without your video as most videos only have the adult call which is totally different. Appreciate the info/education! Oh yeah, live in Northeast Oklahoma, lots of red tails here.
South East Michigan- I see at least 6 almost daily, and dozens more driving around this area. It's hilly, rural, and there are many lakes. It's really amazing to watch them glide and follow their shadows down into the valley. Every so often they dive and scoop up something. The neighbors with farms have to cover their chickens, and keep an eye on small pets, but it's worth sharing the land with such beautiful birds. The call is unmistakable now that I have been able to verify it here. I think we have Cooper Hawks too. Thanks for the audio!
I hear and see them daily… Jacksonville Fl. I often see them go after crows, squirrels and many stray kittens. There are several that seem to hunt with each other… with these sounds they circled above me
I have red-tailed hawks nesting on my property in McMinnville, Tennessee. They are in flight daily. The current juvenile is learning to coast and dive this week, but can frequently be heard calling to it’s mom and dad from the treetops near their nest. Such amazing creatures.
They are truly majestic, they've always been one of my favorite animals. One flew over head tonight calling for awhile through out the neighborhood, San Diego, CA. I've seen many in Utah, California and Wyoming. Their mating ritual is absolutely stunning and terrifying! One of the more dangerous and breathtaking mating rituals of animals.
We live in Acworth Georgia. We have Red Tail Halks around our home all the time. Today we had 9 flying all around out home. Our home has lots of trees one Core land. We just love to sit out and watch and learn from them. How could learn how to fly and care for the Halks

South East Idaho...I have a red-tailed hawk that showed up a little over a year ago. She lives in a tall pine right outside my back door(approximately 20ft from door way openining). My home is surrounded by several different types of trees,& bushes. She never leaves for too long. She's been a much needed source of therapy. I haven't forced anything, but let her come to me on her own terms. She mainly stays approximately 10-15feet high on her perch, & approximately 5-8ft away. She has started swooping down to ground level whenever I'm outside enjoying the serenity of my back yard, & walks the perimeter by my side. Sometimes shell even swoop down to greet me with another smaller bird/pigeon/dove/rabbit. They're never at a struggle, & it's always done when her prey has been noticeably freshly killed by her own claw. She's not much bigger than her prey, but seems to carry the weight with ease. At times it's almost as if she's puffing her chest with pride, perched a top her prey, calmy spreading & gently flapping her wings into & away from her breast. Turning towards me, head cooked from side to side, softly & gently screeching as sh seems to be considerate me, move off her kill, step back, & study me. She has gotten as close to me as 3ft. She doesn't seemed frightened as she preforms her beautiful solo dance, & song. I only ever watch her, & after a few moments she seems to almost be talking to me in an even more gentle almost loving nature. Sometimes we sit for long periods of times enjoying the company of one another. Not always does she bring a fresh kill with her. Other times she simply stands perched on a near by branch no more than approximately 6-8ft high, & within 3-5feet of the top of my head, or eye level. She's smaller than most hawks her breed. Her vocalizationshave such a beautifultone/very complex range. She particularly gets curious when I lay in my hammock, & read out loud to her. Her favorite books tend to be ones philosophical, inspirational/motivational, or composed of deep poetically thoughts of love/justice/honesty/strength. Sometimes she'll stay for longer periods of time,& others for only long enough as if to check in...vocalizing the most tenderly when my children, & myself are the only ones around. Moving with us, as if protecting us by keeping an unmatched level of devotion to us. I've noticed that she playfully taunts our pet Rottweiler/Boxer Samson most often initiating play. So I've given her the name deliah to match. They don't bother one another, yet live in harmony & understanding. She's very protective of our little family. Smaller than most she may be, but as courageous as a mythical pheonix. Whose wings seem to cast a protective shadow over us all in ways that are nothing short of magical. She'ss graceful, regal, proud, & allows onlythee most beautiful song birds such as the robin, miniature sparrows, rocky mountain blue birds, & also humming birds to occupy her space. None of which were birds that I noticed to be in abundance of until she arrived. Tbh none of which are found within city limits. Even if rural like our city, & aren't frequently seen outside the confines of more densly secluded mtnous areas above our 6,500 elev. I don't know how she found us,& don't know how she survives the frigid -25°F to -30°F, 50-60mph wind gust, & heavy white out blizzards we get constantly. Her spirit is strong, her will is free,& whatever wonder brought us together. I don't strive to question it, but rather be grateful & humble for the gift she will forever be to my family. She is a cherished companion, & friend I only hope I'm worthy of claiming. 🙌🫶🦅🙏😌weather watchful eye
Awesome! Wasn’t sure if I had a Red Tail or Cooper’s hawk. Used the sounds for both. I got responses from the Red Tail in our woods. So the sounds helped me clinch it. I am in Louisburg, NC. Thanks.
I had the honor of coming to know one quite well in Western Canada through numerous times out hiking. Although with the fires and smoke an inability to hike at that time I thought I had lost the connection we had developed. To my surprize the Hawk continued to follow me and fly over my home many times. It was only last week after hiking out to the area I meet up with the Hawk that I noticed he wasn't around or were the Swifts that darted about . I spotted many Hawks in the Eastern skies but for some reason the 5 the put on shows for me were absent on my last two hikes out last week.
I live in the Okanagan, on the east side of the valley. We see Red tailed hawks quite often as well and like you we had one that showed up over our house at around 4:00PM daily. It would also call out a few times, ride the thermals and then it would head further up the east side of the valley. We also haven’t seen it since the fires started last summer.
Since comparing tail coloring and sounds, I've confirmed that the very sociable hawk I've been seeing nearby is a juvenile red-tailed hawk. I thought it must be a red-tail, but wasn't sure. Yesterday, he sat in the large old oak in my front yard having a screaming contest with a mockingbird for the better part of an hour. I kept thinking one of them would get too thirsty to continue. It's been so hot and dry here (Cuero, TX) that I hope this youngster can find enough to eat. There's plenty of gophers but they're not as active with the ground so hard. Plenty of huge grasshoppers, though, and I hope he or she eats those, too.
Just had one out by my backyard in Beloit, WI. Saw it flying yesterday, today it was perched on a pole. Just making its calls. Just love to see these guys that you just don't get to very often when you live in city.
The hawk has been a spirit animal of mine for quite sometime , my father rest his soul , passed that on to me, heard a screaming like sound in the trees this morning, called back and one flew closer to me, sun isn’t even up yet, John Michael walleye park cypress springs tx
Took a trip to Skykomish which is about 2-3 hours from where I currently reside in. Stumbled across this video while sitting out there by the river and while watching it there came one out of the trees. Didn’t seem very happy either lol but none the less , it was awesome to see it and then make this exact same noise ! So Majestic
I see the exact same one everyday. In Louisville KY. I love him. He is amazing. I have witness him catching prey. I have had an up close experience with him. It was awesome
Nokesville VA. They attack my chickens so I must watch carefully when they are ranging. In fact, a hawk had one of my birds down one day, and I charged across the meadow and it released it, and the bird survived, but others unfortunately have not.
We live in central Florida and we’re fortunate enough to have a pair of red tail hawks build a nest in our backyard this past spring. There are several of these hawks that stay around our area. Have seen several catching snakes and a few bring them back to our yard to eat them. Beautiful birds. Really enjoy watching them. Definitely know when they are around, they are loud.
I’ve been hearing that call for days. I thought it was a fawn in distress. I went looking down an alley in the wooded area and five hawks flew up out of the trees! I’m so relieved to know it’s not a deer! Thank you!
I live in Beaverton, OR, and frequently hear the screech of a red tailed hawk. At first I thought it was a seagull misplaced from the coast, however, today I saw him or her flying around in circles over the farm next to my townhome. It was an amazing sight!
I played this every morning for about 5 to 10 min now I have a nest and a beautiful couple of hawks that frequent my back yard could not thank you enough.
I have only heard this sound in movies until today when I stepped outside and heard this call of a bird overhead. I looked up to see one of these beautiful hawks soaring way above. What an awesome way to start the day! Austin, Tx
Playing this in hope they come down to my doorstep! I watch them everyday and along the river on thr weekends. Play music for them and they start flying around me closer.
I'm in Woodstock Ga and I had a large Red tailed halk in my yard all day yesterday. We had a lot of rain and pools of water in the yard. She was gathering worms and enjoying her meal. She didn't seem to mind me watching her. Beautiful birds ! 😊

Thank you for this. I have been mixing up red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks for the last several years where both live in and around my property in SC!
I'm in Tulsa Oklahoma across from airport and for 2 years on a row we have family of hawks and We get to hear them and watch them teach their babies to fly is the best
I live in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There is a pair over my neighborhood. They live here year around. Beautiful birds, fierce hunters. They rule the skies here.
We live in the woods that is home to at least one and see it almost daily here in NW Connecticut. It brushed its wing on my front door as I was grabbing the handle to head out. I could feel it connect from the other side and I got an amazing view opening the door. It happened to be the week of my due date while I was pregnant and I will never forget that experience.
We recently have had a juvenile red tailed hawk hanging out in the treetop near our house, I love waking up every morning and hearing the calls ^^ I even see it when I leave the house for work, beautiful bird all around.
I live in Connecticut near a few small airports. We have always had ton of red tailed hawks. I remember being outside early one morning when one burst through the bushes. It had a mourning dove and ate breakfast about 30 feet away from me. It was thrilling and began my love for them.
Been seeing one for past few days in a large front yard tree and today as I was walking my dog soaring overhead making the first call exactly! I’m In upstate New York. I see Cooper’s hawks often as well!
Thank you for your video! Just answered my question on the hawk screeching I've been hearing for 2 weeks. It is a juvenile! Very cool! We're backed up to the national park in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
Saw and heard the calls of a red tailed hawk on my property today in Villanova PA. We have a lot of sharp shinned and perhaps some Cooper’s hawks hitting the bird feeders. This is the first red tailed I’ve seen in a while. We had some nesting in the back yard a couple of springs ago.
Yep I see them often especially in a small wetland area near my condo just east of West Chester Pennsylvania. I’ve seen up to three at a time. My favorite hawk!
I see them all the time where I live in a Northeast Tennessee. I see them roosting in the trees, soaring and diving around the hills. The woods here have all manner of small animals for them to eat, moles, chipmunks, squirrels, groundhogs, possum, raccoons... It's a target rich enviroment. Watched one today cruising around directly over my back patio. I think they may have a nest on my property this year because I constantly hear them, very close to the house and stationary.
I live just west of Des Moines. We see them all the time. Had one perched on my fence a couple weeks ago, just outside the window, so I got a really good look at it from about 8 feet away.
Got a couple not so good pics but he comes to our yard and watches the field before swooping down for dinner. Beautiful big hawk. Randolph County, West Virginia
I came home yesterday around noon and a large Red Tail was hanging out on my deck. I went inside and took some awesome pics of videos of it through the window, he was maybe 3 feet away and he just chilled and let me film him. Was pretty cool to see one so close up.
Good morning! Today in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The adult RTH had just caught either a large mouse or small rat. It then flew out of sight…and screeched twice! Beautiful!!
Yes! Grand Ledge, MI Today a male and female were behind my house in the woods. They flew together and landed twice about 5 foot from each other. Very vocal, and is how I found their location in the trees.
Guess I have one in my yard this year! Lots of territorial fighting going on! Amazing bird! He perches near my house and I see the other birds attacking him but he is still and watches. Amazing, not sure it's a good thing but it's definitely amazing
Hi Swimming outdoors at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena California near the Arroyo Seco...Red-tailed hawks often fly overhead...Always amazing and the squawking calls often heard....Love these awesome raptors!!!!
Just saw 2 in my backyard. 1 I believe is a juvenile. I'm in Pell City, Alabama. I'm playing your video sounds and one of the hawks responded to it. Cool
Thanks for posting this. This is what I am hearing. There seems to be a nest one street over from me. There are two red-tailed hawks that targeted my 14 week old puppy. She is about 20 lbs, so I was shocked when they swooped down at her. Luckily she was walking onto the covered porch, but one brushed the porch roof. I am just north of Denver, CO.
We have one that lives behind our house in North Georgia. As soon as it makes this call all of the little critters take of running. It is quite funny to watch squirrels and chipmunks scatter everywhere.
They are everywhere here in North Mississippi! I sit out on my patio and watch them all the time! I even had one land on my bird feeder platform and chow down on some whole kernel corn. I have to chase them away when they are sitting in my tree looking for unsuspecting birds and squirrels.

Beautiful story!
We live in Ankeny, Iowa. We've had the pleasure of listening to this beautiful bird
Yes. We had a pair at our farm for about 15 years and now, six or seven years after they were gone, we have another pair. It makes me so happy!!!
Thank you!
Today in Ann Arbor. It was soaring in the air and it was so loud. I don’t think I have ever heard a bird that loud before.
Fairplay, Colorado - I noticed fewer birds, then started hearing the hawk - amazing birds
I live in Toronto, ON Canada and i hear this amazing bird all the time where I’m at. I love it
I'm in Woodstock Ga and I had a large Red tailed halk in my yard all day yesterday. We had a lot of rain and pools of water in the yard. She was gathering worms and enjoying her meal. She didn't seem to mind me watching her. Beautiful birds ! 😊

Northwest Ohio - juvenile and adult calls led me to your video. Thank you for posting!
I live along the Allegany river in western New York and I hear red tail hawks all the time. Beautiful music to my ears.
Im in east lansing, Michigan, and the hawks are out and about! Just heard this exact call from above :)
I live on North Vancouver Island, BC, and I've heard and seen these guys flying around. Pretty cool!
See & hear them all the time. Marietta, GA
Yes, we have them in the horse pastures of our barn in Gig Harbor, WA. They are so beautiful!🧡
Just about everyday! 🙏 Had one watching my son and I from top of power pole this morning! 😊 Love them! 💖 Poteau Oklahoma
I came home yesterday around noon and a large Red Tail was hanging out on my deck. I went inside and took some awesome pics of videos of it through the window, he was maybe 3 feet away and he just chilled and let me film him. Was pretty cool to see one so close up.
WOW! I’ve been hearing a LOT of these lately. Northern Adirondacks! I must have a whole bunch of them here and I love it!
I listened to one yesterday afternoon.
It was high up in a hardwood tree, looking over the Jenkins Branch Creek here in south Harvest, Alabama.
Good morning! Today in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The adult RTH had just caught either a large mouse or small rat. It then flew out of sight…and screeched twice! Beautiful!!
Yes! Grand Ledge, MI
Today a male and female were behind my house in the woods. They flew together and landed twice about 5 foot from each other. Very vocal, and is how I found their location in the trees.
I just saw the biggest one I have ever seen today and heard it calling. Bone-chilling. I'm in Atlanta.
Guess I have one in my yard this year! Lots of territorial fighting going on! Amazing bird! He perches near my house and I see the other birds attacking him but he is still and watches. Amazing, not sure it's a good thing but it's definitely amazing
Hi
Swimming outdoors at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena California near the Arroyo Seco...Red-tailed hawks often fly overhead...Always amazing and the squawking calls often heard....Love these awesome raptors!!!!
Yes, they are in our back woods ... Thank You for idenifying their sound
Yes. I heard one this morning in the woods in Huntsville, TX 🙌
Have two in my neighborhood. Beautiful creatures.
Sitting outside in Birmingham, Alabama listening to a red tail hawk
I just heard a red tailed hawk here in Lake Elsinore California
