Star Fox 64, known as Lylat Wars in the PAL regions, is a 1997 3D rail shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the second installment in the Star Fox series and a reboot of the original Star Fox for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Ryu in Landmaster: "How do I fly? This could be problematic" - me: "If only you had a player's guide"
This is the first game I ever played on the N64 when I got it for Christmas when I was 7. I can still remember my technology challenged parents desperately trying to hook it up. They had the system on, and were screwing the RF adapter in last, so I could slowly see the game start to come on the screen through the snow/static screen.
A memory that has stuck with me. I wish I could feel that amount of joy as an adult 🤣 Trying to medal this game on every level is quite the challenge. Wouldn't mind seeing Ryu attempt that.
I had Mario 64, Turok, Lylat wars best Christmas ever
Shout out to my N64 kids, pure nostalgia!
N64 kids never die, we just play Ogrebattle 64 in the sky.
not sure if you put it together but when Peppy says not to fly too low because your ship can't take it on Solar, they're actually telling you that you take damage faster the lower you fly. also Slippy says the Arwing can take temperatures up to 9,000 degrees. the arwing is taking heat damage, therefore (forgive me) IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND!
WHAT?! NINE THOUSAND?! There’s no way that can be right!
I remember the first time I beat Andross. Dropped the controller and walked away so happy and proud. Died immediately.
If I recall correctly, you need 100 Points on Sector Y to get the alternate route, so Ryu was one point away from it.
Yup! That's why Falco is acting like (even more of) a little bitch the entire time about your kill count
Truly a sadge moment. 😔
I played this so much as a kid! Called "Lylat Wars" in my country, the UK. Thanks for this, Ryu, I'm going to pour a glass of wine and enjoy this!
Still regularly play this
Lylat Wars in France too, it was probably the case for all of Europe.
@@ErlewynSame in Germany
@@Erlewyn Wonder why they changed the name?
@@modermonkula Apparently Nintendo hadn't copyrighted the "StarFox" name in Europe, which is also why the SNES game is called Star Wing here.
To get to Aquus, you had to kill 100 enemies before you got to a certain point. Also, if you flew into formation, you'd get a 1-Up from it.
In Katina, Peppy will sometimes accidentally shoot down one of Bill's guys.
That scream wasn't dramatic. In Area 6, if you don't shoot down all five missiles, one of your wingmen will get hit.
They run like that in the bad ending. The difference between the two is Andross' face doesn't appear in the sky in the good ending.
This is indeed a classic. One of the best games for the N64. I had many great games for that console, from Perfect Dark, to both Zeldas (OoT and Majora's Mask).
This is one of my favorite games ever. I so often go back and play this. Not only is it a great game, but the fact you can just pick up jump immediately into it and beat it in a hour or so keeps me coming back.
Now if only I was actually good at the game.
Who the fuck takes an hour to beat a 35 minute game?
He states “or so” and kinda says he wishes he was better at the game too. You may be slower than him though lol.
@@marksnow9917 What the hell is your point? Even being terrible at the game doesn't take an hour to beat. That means you would take the easiest route because you're bad and you'd still be able to beat it in less than an hour. Your logic is severely flawed, dipshit....
It literally would be SO EASY for Nintendo to make a 10/10 Star Fox game. But they refuse to do it 😢
What I'd do:
- Arwing Missions only
- Playable Star Fox, Star Wolf and Kat/Krystal/Faye/Miyu team missions
- Compelling story dripping in Nostalgia from the series lore, but relevant and new for our times. Possible AI/Robot baddies forcing Star Fox and Star Wolf to team up to save the galaxy.
- Online Battle Royale Dogfights in Space + 4v4 Team battles
- Top Tier Voice Actors. Think Nolan North as Fox, Dave Fennoy as General Pepper, Danny Devito as Pigma, etc
- DLC Pack Franchise Crossover, featuring the F-Zero universe and featuring the original 4 Pilots in F-Zero as a team (Falcon, Pico, etc)
I know they keep adding unessecary bits In all their new games just stick to the shooting man!
"Falco what happened?" after having shot at him again and again :D
RIP Rick May, voice of Peppy and many other beloved characters.
Judgment Day with Will Smith? lol
PSA:
Independence Day - Will Smith
Judgment Day - Terminator/Arnold Schwarzenegger
He got his days mixed up and for a second I thought it was me who was confused XD
psa, dont put blank lines and force everyone to hit a button to read things.
I remember playing this game so much on my N64, such good times. Finding the shortcuts and dodging all the fire and saving Slippy's sorry butt numerous times.
Absolute gem of a game. Glad to see you playing this
Core memories BIG TIME unlocked.
29:26 Slippy just witnessed an entire facility explode by a train that crashed itself and its crew into it. Brutal.
Easily one of my all time favorite games. Even after all these years I still have all of the dialogue memorized. This video made my day.
I’ve been watching you for years, but this might be my favorite video yet. I have so much nostalgia for this game, it was cool seeing you share in that as well. I could never get the epic ending as a kid, so we’d play multiplayer on my friend’s N64 who was able to unlock everything.
That 1997 hit hard... Thank you for reminding me this game. I used to love It too back then.
My brothers and I used to take turns on the story missions so we could unlock everything like the landmaster and on foot for vs. This game was my childhood and the music at 53:40 will always get me in the feels
Still waiting for a muppet-based Star Fox TV show.
it was called crank yankers.
@@joejoe2658 I'm not sure in what way that is anything like Star Fox.
I was thinking more like Thunderbirds, which was a classic puppet-based sci-fi adventure show about pilots.
I'd rather have a Star Fox show thats animated. Nintendo made a short for Star Fox Zero a couple of years ago, and it was well done! If anything, that should've got its own series.
51:26 you say that like it's bad 😂
This is probably my favorite videogame of all time.
This is still one of my favourite games ever. A lot of it definitely comes down to nostalgia, but I have so many good memories playing Lylat Wars/Starfox 64.
I especially remember being really proud when I reached Venom on the hard route for the first time, just to reset the console because I was scared of Andross' brain boss form. Did that every time until I got a little older lol.
When it was announced for the virtual console on the Switch, one of my friends immediately jumped to the shop to get me an N64 controller, since they knew how much I love this game and how long I waited for Nintendo to release that controller.
I freaking love this game. Slippy get back here!
Funny how you got the strategy guide but, never used it once this whole playthrough. Also funny Fox crashed right in front of his father at the end. Lastly, I don't mind hour long retro games like this. Keep them coming, bro.
I played this game probably as much as GoldenEye back when I was a kid on the N64 even bought the Star Fox 3DS game when it was released
You have to get all the medals in every level to unlock hard mode. Gotta get a certain score on each mission with all 3 wingman surviving.
I had so many of the voice lines stuck in my head for years, sometimes they still come up now and again
The end of the final mission always hits, especially when fox doesn't have the courage to talk about his dad.
*You've gone so strong, Fox..*
...😱💔
Cocky little freaks is my favorite boss line 😂😂😂
Katina is my favorite level, it reminds me of Independence Day
I won the StarFox Super Weekend in my state.
Ryu forgot the guide was sitting on the desk 😂
Great video as usual, man! I grew up with this game and it is one of those awesome N64 classics that is easy to revisit! While it is a very short game, it still is quite fun and replayable. I hope you do more '90s Nintendo classics!
This really makes me wish for a new Star Fox game! I just hope they go back to what made this series great! Simple, fun, intense shmup with charming characters and corny dialogue (and lots of explosions)!
"Don't let Andross have his way with you, Fox." You know, that's pretty sage advice.
They should do a remake of this game, but way better than the 3DS version
The Land Master missions were always my favorite!
SMASHING that like button. I adore Star Fox 64.
Was anyone else getting frustrated when he was flying low in Solar? lol
I was sarcastically thinking “maybe you should actually read that player’s guide you have” LOL.
I actually think the game does a good job at communicating that mechanic though, you get audio feedback as you get closer to the lava, and one of the teammates has that early comment about flying high.
Ah, that sweet sweet nostalgia hitting me with this one.
Blabba Wing Damage! Do a barrel roll!
Have not see this game in decades. Its amazing how much i still remember great vid
Bro you are the master of locking on a charge shot and then immediately shooting the target down, thereby negating it 😂
Great play through, lot of nostalgia there
I used to play the crap out of this game as a kid. Love it to bits.
The nostalgia is strong with this one! You better be using the rumble pack! Oh nm you’re playing on Wii U lol.
That's right. In the US at least, I think this game was the debut of the N64 Rumble Pack and it came packed into the box (if I remember correctly).
@@mattb6522 yes you are indeed correct!
The Star Wolf battles were always the hardest for me. I do really awesome in the "all range mode" stuff, but all my idiots seem to have taken their stupid pills before they start flying and it quickly turns into a 4v1 whenever I play. I seems to remember running into them 3 times taking a certain route, but THEY are absolutely when the game stops pulling pinches and just grabs you by the skull.
Nice job, btw. You did great, considering it was a somewhat blind run.
for anyone who's curious, the secret in the 2nd level he played is unlocked just by getting enough kills. It's pretty tough because targets are relatively scarce for how many points you need. You want lots of bombs and charged shots to take out groups.
The funny thing he was only 2 points off
He was only ONE point off! 😂 You need 100 hits to unlock the hard path in the second level and he got 99.
The secret path he's thinking of, is in the meteor field. There's another secret path in sector X.
That file select music ❤👌
This is one of my favorite games as well. I, unfortunately, did not grow up with the original N64 version. But I bought it on virtual console (Wii) with some of my christmas money in high school. The 1st time I beat the game my school had just announced that next day was a snow day. One of the best nights ever!
I remember I was at a party at my sisters house as a teen, and there was this chick I thought was hot and I tried to impress her by playing Starfox 64 LMAO!!!
did it work?
@@Ryu we talked a few weeks but she was into drugs and alcohol too much for me. Funny though she turned her life around later and is still friendly.
@@Ryuwouldve worked if it was dkc2
Something I do remember is that there's a difference between mission complete and mission accomplished. Been years since I've played that game, such a classic! Oh and also if you lose slippy you no longer see the bosses health bar. A pretty cool feature IMO.
11:43
DON'T POTTY JUST YET!
IT'S TIME TO TRY OUT OUR NEW BATHROOM!
"have you tried not being useless?" 😂😂 I've literally said this to family and coworkers 😂😂
Man, I love Satrfox, the music is awesome, but my favorite is Starfox Adventures on the Gamecube. Love your channel man!
Adventures wasn't even a Starfox game lol, it was originally called Dinosaur Planet then later had Star Fox slapped on it. I say Assault is the best.
@@ItApproaches fun fact: The sequel to 64 would have been an adventure game with or without dinosaur planet. Miyamoto wanted the next game to be an adventure game.
@@ItApproaches yeah well let's call it a Starfox hack lol, regardless it was a good game, Assault was awesome too.
@@kurokamina8429And we never got it. Poor Star Fox....it really deserves better.
Damn this was so satisfying to watch. Great job, Ryu! I don't think I ever got the shortcut in mission 1, so it was a treat to see.
This game, ladies and gentlemen, was absolutely incredible back in 1997.
Unfortunately, I think Nintendo doesn't care about this franchise anymore. The mere fact that they didn't release anything for it for their 'successful' Switch is beyond anything I can add to this subject, it speaks for itself.
lol I never realized how funny that line was! "Andross wont have his way with me!" And I've played a butt ton of this game over the years
Man what a good choice for a retro video. Would love to see a route that includes the tank.
I played this game and went every path I possibly could while I was on leave recovering from surgery. It's so awesome!
Now you gotta play the other routes including the submarine level!
OMG THE SUB!
I don't know if it's random but at the end before it says rank in you would see Andros' face and laugh maniacally. It was creepy as hell. It's probably the bad ending but I've even gotten it when I would get all the medals in a run basically guaranteeing the best ending. Can someone confirm that?
Also I remember General Pepper saying "whaaaat!?" at the end when you get the bill when you destroy a crazy amount of enemies.
there was this kid i used to know and i would over to his house just to play this game
This is my all-time favorite game, good playthrough! The Voice acting is just so nostalgic.
Also killing Slippy in Area 6 is just perfection.
So much secrets and things you can find in the game. A game with so much replay-ability
so nostalgic thank you for playing this!
The not answering the calls was stressful! haha, great to see a playthrough of this game though, one of my favs for sure
I love games where the bosses go "AAAAAarrghgr!" and explode into a beautiful orb. Also, I'm playing "try to remember the different exit conditions" game along with ya.
Yeah, this was probably my favorite N64 game back in the day. I used to speed run the hell out of this game. The N64 version with the original controller is the best way to play.
This game was so fun...thanks for the playthrough!
Went to get some pint of ice cream, greek yogurt, chocolates chips, shreaded coconut, bananas and mixed up yogurt and ice cream for self serve yogurtland. Great memories playing starfox 64 with my froyo and this video brought me back
The Credits scene in this game always makes me wonder, why did they park so far away?
The amount of secrets in this game use to blow my mind as a child
Wow! Proper nostalgia feels. I used to be able to complete the whole game without dying!
I was 8 years old when this came out this was my first love of video games. Play hours of it and I still can’t beat my childhood score of 2863 hits. Still saved to this day I never want to beat it I’m very rusty I even have the strategy guide as well with a 3D print arwing. This game loves rent free in ma soul.
I medalled this game top to bottom, both on the N64 and on the 3DS. Love this game!
First game to ever have rumble and it came packaged with the Rumble Pak. I remember tipping my wing into the water on the first level and I "felt" it in my hands. It blew my mind at the time.
Fox: here's the bill.
Pepper: WHAAAAA
this was such a fun watch, had me rolling with laughter on a lot of those levels
Man I loved that game!!! I really wish Reukar had the N64 controller for the WiiU. Makes a huge difference!!
13:37 nice little easter egg 😂
I spent so many hours getting the expert mode. Unlocked everything. I know that game like the back of my hand
You said Diddy Kong's Quest but it's Diddy's Kong Quest, I learned that from you
My favourite game of all time, what a treat to watch you play, Ryu. Feel free to show off all paths, I'll be here for it.
“Damn im old”
Ends the video
😂😂😂
I can't believe you are just playing my favorite game ever! THANK YOU!
First thing I thought of when I seen the video. Peppy being like do a barrel roll!! This game was great.
This is a game that takes up serious real estate in your brain when you play it at the right age. Shit, it's still taking up real estate all these years later in mine.
These videos are so nostalgic and great to watch! Please finish dk country you will love the speed run with the parrot in the second last level
Thx
Star Fox was the first N64 game I ever played. Loblaws (grocery store) for some reason had a Nintendo promotional event there for the release of N64 and I got to play 1 level and I was absolutely blown away at the time. Still one of my favs to this day.
You probably mean that the event was made for the release of the game itself, rather than the N64 console. Because the console itself came out the previous year in '96 (and SF64 came out in April of '97).
@@lyrand6408 maybe I was about 6 or 7 so I dont remember much, but I definitely didn't play n64 before that 😅
Man, such a shame, Ryu. You were *one* point off of maintaining the hard path on Sector Y. lol
Unlocking all of the medals can be a pretty fun challenge. Ironically, hard path Venom is the easiest medal to unlock. Just gotta make sure _you_ kill each of the Star Wolf members within a certain time limit that isn't that strict. Easy path Venom is actually pretty tough as I remember.
Also, the path you wanted before Andross was, I believe: Left Right Left Left Right Right. I might be remembering wrong, but the guidebook you have shows you what's on each path. That one gets you health and weapon upgrades If I am remembering correctly.
even before I became a furry Starfox was a franchise that I really loved for the characters and design but never played because back then I wasnt into dogfights (if you can even call the first games that, more like rail shooters) but the music was constantly in my ears from one afternoon staying at a friends who played it.
Only game I played myself was Adventures for the GC and Starl̶i̶n̶k̶fox: Battle for Atlas on the Switch but I still love the series existance
30:30 it was 300 points. You need max
Bombs and know exactly when to use the
I will play the map music while I'm at work. I played this so much the Christmas I got my N64. I think I got Mario Mario Kart and Starfox. Was a great Christmas.
You lost your laser upgrades because you lost one of your wings, and you'd have to get other upgrades to get the more powerful lasers back.
I know everyone loves tips for a 30 year old game, but in the fire level you take more damage the closer you are to the lava. If you stay at the top of the screen, you barely drain health.
Hey Ryu, your Yootooz figure arrived today! It looks awesome! So happy I got one!
40plus mins is perfect for retro when its good!
You should give Spacestation Silicon Valley on the N64 a try. I remember that game being super hard when I was younger and the wierd quirks of the animal things were always hilarious, like the rat the pooped explosives. 😂
