The Hawaiian Music Scene of 1972.
THIS EVENING’S HŌ‘IKE takes a nostalgic look-back at Hawai‘i’s dynamic music scene 50 years ago. Three musical milestones of 1972 inspire tonight’s performance: Gabby “Pops” Pahinui‘s historic “brown album” titled “Gabby” featuring the
traditional kī hō‘alu favorite “Hi‘ilawe”; the haunting love song “E Ku‘u Morning Dew” composed by pioneering leader of Hawaiian language revitalization Larry Kimura and revered Hawaiian music traditionalist Eddie Kamae; and the release of the album “Cracked Seed” by the iconic trio Sunday Mānoa, featuring Peter Moon and Robert and Roland Cazimero. Their meteoric rise reflected an emerging cultural renaissance led in large part by the younger generation.
Helping to recreate some of the musical magic of the era is the multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning trio Keauhou: Zachary Alaka‘i Lum, Nicholas Keali‘i Lum, and Jonah Kahanuola Solatorio. They are joined by noted Hawaiian music educator and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning performer Kamuela Kimokeo-and other special guests.
Join us as we revel in the beautiful harmonies and exciting musical stylings of five decades ago, brought to life through the vibrant hula artistry of our youth. Please enjoy the Hawaiian music scene of 1972.
