    Of course, if you wish, you can convert this prescriptions, by converting to Spherical Equivalent. To do that, you just take the "Spherical" measurement, and add 1/2 the astigmatic value. You can ignore the angle. I personally prefer being prescribed with a spherical lens - as I do that myself. Thanks for your excellent discussion.

      Ian Squire Hi Ian - Thanks for your reply. I generally check my own refractive status using spherical lenses. If I can read the 20/20 line though a spherical, I just do not use a Toric. In my opinion, a person should be informed, that a toric lens is optional, if he has 20/20 though a spherical. I personally would not wear a lens, if I had naked-eye 20/20, with perhaps a self-measured astigmatism of 1.5 diopters. It means the difference between wearing glasses all the time, or wearing no glasses at all. (I would definitely given the patient that educated choice.

    Hi thanks for this. Is there anyway, for bifocals where there is reading lens, which numbers to add that to in order to get the reading glasses prescription? For example, with a distance prescription of -0.50, +2.75, 017 (vs it's transposition +2.25, -2.75, 107) , which transposition do I add this 1.75 number to in order to get the reading lens spherical prescription or does it matter?

    I appreciate your explanation of the optical cross, it was excellent! I am still a little confused of the 'why' in the 3 transposition rules you showed. Why does the cyl symbol change, why do you add or minus 90 to the axis etc?

      They’re equivalent that way. The “why” is because ophthalmologists typically write their prescriptions in plus cylinder while optometrists usually write their prescriptions in minus cylinder.

Will the overall thickness of the lens be the same if written either way? I guess in other words, will the lens be exactly the same if written either way???

      @@drdenniskessler this is my distance eyeglass prescription written in minus cylinder:
      OD - 2.25 - 0.75 x 180
      OS - 2.25 - 0.75 x 180
      and in plus cylinder:
      OD -3.00 + 0.75 x 090
      OS - 3.00 + 0.75 x 090
      They look different but are optically equivalent (the same).

    Thats my glasses presrciption. Trying to buy contact lenses,there is an issue. Due to standar cyl numbers in forms... doctors and opticians can not agree what should i buy. Others say to subtract 0.25 cyl and other that i will feel dizzy with that. Could you help me transpose glasses prescription to contact lenses? Thank you!
