So what program do they have in place to hire qualified minorities because dei was brought in because of discrimination same thing with affirmative action
I just want a meritocracy, I want the most qualified engineer, doctor, medical professional, trade contractor, etc, etc to be doing my work or anyone’s others work.
Ya the US isn't even that without DEI lol even before the craziness is was always people hiring who they know or friends first. I used to work in restaurants, and new upper management people were always like some other manager's friend from college or a different restaurant. They rarely promoted from within
In what world does that happen? We aren’t ai machines. There is always bias and preference when humans are involved. DEI at its best try’s to mitigate that.
In Canada, DEI is still pushed almost like a state religion. Government agencies and institutions have mandates around these trainings, and this also extends to most private businesses and organizations that work with the government in any capacity. Anecdotally and likely by the metrics as well, it seems to have created a lot of unnecessary confusion, contention, and division. It’s also been expensive to implement with no observable monetary benefits for taxpayers or private enterprises. I really hope we set this ideology aside and just get back to basic merit and common decency.
It's wild we had to test if a meritocracy works better than a divisive identity forced workplace? Also crazy how far this had to be played out for them to realize this.
@ when it first began especially, it was also very toxic and tore apart a lot of relationships and eroded company cultures. People were too scared to lose their jobs to mention it openly, but depending on the trainer, some of these programs acted like “struggle sessions” where people were more or less categorized into victim and oppressor groups. Then tragic stories like Richard Bilkszto started to come out and break a bit of the silence, but on a governmental level there hasn’t been much of an effort to correct course. The Canada I grew up in was one of the most warm and welcoming places anywhere on earth regardless of someone’s background or beliefs, and that was within a meritocratic context. I’m hoping we can return to that soon.
This was a very nuanced conversation. There are multiple points of view here and it's good to be able to see both sides of the argument and how it affects all involved.
DEI was only tenable while the government subsidized it. The US federal government, in tandem with other western governments, offers lenders tax credits to banks in return for them issuing loans that meet ESG criteria of which DEI is a prominent component. Mechanically, it works a lot like first time home buyer loans. With Trump winning the whitehouse and conservatives movements gaining prominence in Europe, as seen Germany's AFD rising to being the second largest party and recent elections in France, this government funding for DEI is drying up. No one actually believed in the McKinsey and Co papers. Everyone knew they were conflating correlation with causation the entire time. The only way DEI made money was through government subsidized loans.
As a hardcore moderate, I think this all started with some good ideas 40 years, that got WAY out of hand. I wonder what damage it's already done: Amtrak's replacement for the Acela, Avelia, has gone off the rails (pun, eh, intended I admit) several times and is years overdue. I just know what I see and am told by other people in the DC area. It has a lot of minority representation in upper management. So I wonder...were these people maybe unqualified to run a railroad and/or manage such a complex purchase initiative?
I never had a problem with affirmative action programs, yet I find DEI to be completely different even though they seem pretty much the same to a lot of people. And I think the difference is that DEI has a whole ideology behind it which I think is destructive rather than helpful. Affirmative action didn't try to control your thinking, whereas the goal of DEI is to force everyone to accept a certain kind of thinking.
Walmart SAYS It is ending DEI. BUT IS IT REALLY? Just like all these corporations that say they're donating to this group and that group and never do. No one ever checks on these people to see if what they say is true.. NEVER ASSUME They are telling the truth! THEY MAY BE SAYING WHAT THEY THINK YOU WANT TO HEAR...
This wasn't primarily because of "activism," Walmart sees the writing on the wall with the SCOTUS Affirmative Action decisions and knows that the days are numbered for these policies. It's the power that made Walmart susceptible to Starbuck's approach.
For 40 years you all told us to listen to Martin Luther King Jr and ignore race, judge people on the content of their character. That's all removing DEI does. We should eliminate *ALL* federal laws that mention race, color, creed or gender completely.
He has a point, because of DEI I can’t trust that the person I’m dealing with is qualified. For example, how do I know the pilot of the plane I’m boarding is there because they’re qualified or because the airline had to hire them despite their qualifications?
@@NotLikeUs17Baltimore just lowered thier standardized testing to become a police officer because not enough black women were passing. They news leaves out that the test that was being administered was at a 5th grade level. Let that sink in.
Pilots license are granted by the FAA. You have to pass their test to qualify as a pilot. If you're flying a plane, it's because you're qualified to do so. What has happened however is that companies like United Airlines are hiring (qualified) pilots based on their race and gender. The problem isn't competency in this case, it's that a company is making discriminatory hiring policies in a pool of qualified candidates.

If 1% of the people get treated differently because their gender identification or racial status, not because of meritocracy, the rest of 99% will slack off and be lazy. It is a pernicious avalanche effect.
Love how Walmart says, "foster a sense of belonging'" Just a sense of it. Can we please just call a spade a spade and say that walmart is just towing the line for the shareholders and to keep their wage slaves in line?
This bozo is arguing that DEI is already mandated in federal law? Well, good thing that federal law is about to change now that we have house Senate and executive… The grift is over!
I wouldn't hold my breath. Ultimately the oligarchy gets what it wants, and it wants social strife and class warfare to keep the population busy fighting each other.
Glad this stuff is coming to an end. Meritocracy is the only factor that should matter. How are you supposed to compete when the deciding factor is the identity you're born with? I can't become blacker so that I get the job so it becomes an impossible barrier to entry that doesn't convey any net benifit to society, but instead a net loss from whatever merit was left at the door due to racial discrimination. Do not repay evil with evil, which is what this was.
You also need the level of diversity to have understanding of the people you are impacting. Yea get the most qualified but efficiency isn't truly present when ignorant biases allow you to ignore nor recognize what is circumstantial and what is perspective.
Why Those Woke activist only Push DEI in USA , EU , Japan , South Korea , Tunisia , South africa , Malaysia , Rwanda , Botswana ? Why Not Push DEI in Somalia , Zimbabwe , North Korea , yemen etc ? Why Fix Something that isn't Broken ? . Instead of fix something that Broken ? .
How long? How long should efforts be made to make up for past inequities by setting quotas? What if the company never participated in those inequities itself? That's a terrible argument for continuing any kind of artificial racial balancing of who you do business with.
Awareness is one thing. Wokeness is something different entirely. Unfortunately that wasn't always the case. 'Woke' used to be a term simply meaning awareness that other races and ethnic groups have had a harder time of it in this country. Now it means anything that slaps convention or tradition in the face, and the more outrageous the better. People are pretty understanding in general, right up until something crosses into the realm of the ridiculous. In this country, we don't react...we overreact.
There is a difference between hiring for government jobs/contracts, etc. [Whether or not there should be is a separate question.] The argument from history is false. Many economists and historians (including prominent Blacks) have pointed out that for a long time in the US, black workers prospered partly because they offered more productivity, artistry, etc. for the cost than their white competitors. Merit based hiring is a net plus.
If you want a majority share of the market, then why choose a minority at the expense of trust and credibility from the majority. At a business level it doesn't make sense to me.
Is this guy attempting to say Biden saying he was choosing exclusively a black woman is the same as Trump saying he would choose a woman exclusively? And then he goes on to say Jackson was qualified even though she couldn't define what a woman was?
