I'm amazed by Megumi's story, so full of potential, a limited view of himself, a man with morals that stunt his growth, a troubled child, and a really sad person. I've felt lack of self-worth many times and only thanks to others do I find it.
Dang never really thought about it like that. Like the whole picture really tells something new when you look at Megumi as a person rather just looking at his traits individually.
Honestly when I look at him like that, he reminds me of myself. And I think alot of readers could probably relate to his character more if they looked at him like that.
Lowkey, Megumi reminds me of Killua in a way. Killua was always pretty strong but due to Illumi's needle, he had thought very little of himself. Megumi internalized the fact that he could be less of a sorcerer and due to that lack of confidence, he doesn't believe he can be more than he already is.
I hate how people make fun of him for giving up after he lost his sister and father figure while yuji gave up twice and Todo had to motivate him everytime
Yuji had a mental breakdown he didn't giveup
i kind of agree but also people need to realise that these characters are different. like ok yuuji took it well but megumi is clearly just more sensitive to getting traumatised, it doesn’t mean he’s a wimp or weak or a crybaby he’s just normal bruh
@@MR.jaykko he literally was going to let mahito kill him
@@rohanking12able
but do you think yuji would let his friends die even in that situation.
@@asura3229It came off like he was telling them to give up on saving him and he rather die with Sukuna at this point. Cuz they can kill him with jacobs ladder. They had the opportunity before. But they didn't cuz they wanted to save Megumi.
But Megumi does not want to be saved at this point. He just wants release through death. He's broken and buried in the shadowy depths of despair.
At least that's how it came off to me.
I'm glad Megumin is getting the recognition he deserves, he has so much to offer in JJK even the fact that Akutami originally wanted him to be the main character somewhat says alot. I hope Megumi comes back very soon so we see him and Yuji take on Sukuna both together. Not to mention Megumi being praised and blessed by two of the strongest sorcerers in history and today is a indicator that Megumi was born for greatness and destined for more.
I had read and thought that megumi was briefly considered for main character, but originally Yuta was meant to be the main character, which is why he has a whole ah movie abt him. I may be wrong doe
@@Hpon. nah if you look at the original "pilot" for jjk he was actually the original mc in the draft
@@Hpon. but yuta is the kinda psuedo protag
Welp. Gege read this and now Megumi is going to die. I hope you're happy now 🤦♂️🙄
Apparently gege didn't want to write about a highschool age cast ,he wanted a more mature seinen ish manga with adults in the spotlight. So he was probably struggling to decide because their editors and sponsoring company wanted it to become shonen
Thank you! Sukuna literally drowned his soul, made sure to kill Yorozu with Megumi's technique so he could feel his death and people expected him to just brush it off and fight like his trauma wasn't a big deal? It's just dumb, Megumi was already a depressed kid who suppressed his emotions, him losing the will to live is a very valid response to all the hell he has been through
meet potential man!
Great character breakdown! I TRULY hope that you make a character deconstruction video on Sukuna. I really need a better, well detailed explanation and examination of his ideology, goals, and why he believes what he believes
Fuck potential man.
Megumi's mindset of fairness reminds me of Gon's mindset when confronting Pito to save Kite or when the appraiser mentioned his thoughts about Gon in the cafe. They both share the ideal of good and bad people, and desire to save those they believe are good. Another great video as always Sage
Thank you for defending Megumi! His story breaks my heart and I hate seeing people give him a shallow analysis when his psychology completely makes sense given his life experiences.
I only pray Gege has something phenomenal in store for my boy, lord knows he needs it

That L.A Noire-Rainy Mood music fits Megumi and his personality to a T! The rain is basically never ending for Megumi and it cycles to a typhoon that causes a flood to engulf his own soul, only to turn back into rain that keeps hitting the shadows
the song he used when megumi gets possessed is scorching winds from kenshi its damnable sad.
this gives megumi being a shadow a deeper meaning... especially when you think about how sukuna pushes him deeper into darkness it truly is sad and really shows that this series is really one big tragedy

Ugh, this video is such a breath of fresh air in the ("potential man" meme drenched) Megumi discourse!! Thank you for this very thorough character portrait!! My man Megumi deserves more grace in regards to his potential imo there's just too much to his story to brush it off
If there is a continuation of jjk, it better be about this guy. I feel like Megumi is the character that could become the real redeemer of the jujutsu world. Maybe the reversal of the 10 shadows could be the 7 lights, and we see the opposite of curses... blessings. Just a thought... maybe i should write my own story instead of hoping for someone else's to be how my mind sees things.
I was kinda mad on how they used megumi. I mean he was like the perfect weapon against gojo for sukuna to use. I respect the fact that we could see early in the series during the sukuna vs megumi fight that sukuna knew right away he was the key to stopping gojo. So it was devastating to see that he was basically just a weapon sukuna needed to fight the one guy megumi respected the most. A pawn for sukuna to use. That was a sad day for megumi fans like me.
megumi is my favorite character i hope he gets to redeem himself later in the story

Finally, a good analysis of his character without a "man up dude! You just lost your will to fight. That's not a big deal!" message!
I agree with most you are saying, besides one thing: Megumi didn't choose to be more negativ about himself, imo.
He is a character who resembles a lot of a depression state known as dysthymia. People effected by it are naturally negativ. They aren't in a real depression, but their mentality is naturally more negativ than by normal people and because of that, they get way easier too a depression.
Megumis negativity from a very young age is very telling for that. It's very unusual for a child to be so negativ and to not care about him/herself safty or happyness. Him only asking for Tsumikis safty and happyness on its own shows he already sees no hope for himself. He shouldn't be so negativ, when someone comes to him and tells him he will bring him and his sister out of their miserable life. Shows he is naturally negativ. But there is also his 10 shadows technique.
What I love about Jjk is that the ability of a character is also heavyly effecting their mentality. Like Getos technique had a awful tast, which he had to endure. It brought him done and was a part of his downfall. Megumis technique is heavy. Everything in his shadow will become a heavy weight for him to carry. He already has 10 shikigami in his shadow from the beginning. We find that out in his fight against Reggie. We also find out, how it feels like to be in Megumis shadow. When Reggie falls in his shadow he can't get out on his own. The shadow itself is heavy and drags everything in it down. It means Megumi also gets dragged down from his own shadow.
So no, I don't see Megumi choosing to be negativ all the time. He got cursed by nature.
It’s hard to realize our self worth when we go down certain paths in our life. So instead of expressing ourselves we just hold it in and like Sage said we numb the pain or feelings, but even when hope is lost and we give up on life God will always be there waiting to help dig us out of the hole we dug. Preciate the video and God bless everyone
It’s very interesting how expression of emotions is so deeply rooted in JJK’s narrative but also it’s world. Curses come from feeling intensely negative emotions and that’s where their source of strength comes from as well. The greater the emotion, the greater the curse. Both Yuji and Megumi go about limiting their intense emotions through different means, Yuji confronts them head on and doesn’t hide from his feelings, he’s able to express them in a way that allows himself to grow beyond them and move past them. Megumi never takes that first step and bottles it up inside himself which is why I think he ultimately fails to save Sumiki. His inability to confront his inner demons is exactly why curses are so strong. People don’t like to look inside themselves or confront the cause of their negative emotions because they hold a lot of the same mindset as Megumi to a lesser extent. This develops their characters as they’ve experienced similar trauma but because of the way they go about it their resolves are wildly different from one another. After losing his mentor and female friend whilst also causing the deaths of thousands by his own hands, Yuji is broken but able to still find a way to keep moving forward. Megumi on the other hand remains broken indefinitely as he is had been unable to express himself choosing to favour a nihilistic facade over being vulnerable. In an ironic way. Yuji’s allowance of himself to be vulnerable at loss or express himself in a vulnerable way has made him effectively invulnerable with unshakable will, whereas Megumi choosing to not openly feel emotions and not be affected by anything has made him the most emotionally vulnerable and tormented character in the series.
I'm glad you specifically noted Megumi has low self worth. This gets confused a lot with low self confidence, but Megumi seems pretty sure that, in a pinch, he can indeed "go all in" and at least severely inconvenience his opponent. He just intends to sacrifice himself in the process. He knows he has potential, but his lack of self worth prevents him from tapping it, almost as if he wishes all that potential was given to someone else.
Always enjoy your thoughtful analyses.
I love megumis character a lottt, can’t wait for him to come back
So the whole series is comprised of "if only ..."
A deluge of broken dreams and melancholy that can only be remedied by taking from others.
Perhaps we are all potential men🗿
Not all of us get to be what we wanted to be when we were kids
Timing of video is immaculate. We just see Megumi fight back Sukuna and help Yuji in chapter 266.
I think you meant "immaculate" but I entirely agree. bro must have pre read the raws before drafting this lmao 😂
@@CrazypumaX Pulling an all-nighter always fucks your brain.😂
Despite the fact that Megumi isn't even really around, I think Sukuna v Gojo really shows what would of happened if Megumi didn't get taken over by Sukuna. If he had just tamed all the ten shadows, he could have been honestly in par with someone like Gojo. This is kinda proven by Gojo talking about the 6 eyes and ten shadows users' fight all those years ago where they both end up losing. But Megumi didn't care about himself, and as we see, self confidence is the road to power in JJK
Tl;Dr - Megumi could have been special grade, had he just realized his worth
Thats weird because Yuta hated himself even more
@@rohanking12able but Rika didn't and as we see Yuta wasn't very strong before the time skip in JJK 0 but Rika was known as special grade. Yuta grew when training with inumaki, panda and Maki. We even see the improvement in the fight against that one cursed spirit that Geto sent after him and inumaki with the light beams. That's the start of Yuta's self confidence boost, and the start of his strength
just a question but how was megumi ever going to tame mahoraga and wipe his ass with one kill shot. sukuna is different. it's like ben simmons, he has all the talent in the world but with no proper mentality, talking about potential is honestly useless
@@yeatdagoat173 well I heard once that Toji might be able to help him, he wouldn't be targeting by domains and it can be inferred that the ritual acts like a domain
@@yeatdagoat173the good old ox shikigami treadmill method
So many people hate Megumi saying he "folded" that one chapter with his soul. But man can u blame him he was depressed and had confidence issues way before any of this started.
His sister was a big motivation for him to go forward and being forced to kill alot of the people who gave him the will to live took its toll on him.
He just wants to die at this point
But hopefully Yuji can bring his friend back from the dephs of Despair
All these people are lying to themselves. Its kinda funny. Megumi loosing the shred of life that he deems worth living for and people are upset hes lost his will to even stand up
He just doesn't care about Yuji ig
This, but also on a much simpler level, somehow people always forget that he’s a kid. He’s only 15, and he never even asked for any of it. He’s been through so much unimaginable trauma and loss at a young age, never had a reliable figure to help him unpack anything, and yet people still look at him and go, “just get up!” Like, how would he?
Someone finally says that he is traumatised since his childhood. The fact he doesnt even care about his father anymore explains that he still thinks that his father left him because Toji didnt find any value in him and his father doesnt like him. The fact that he had to mature up at such a young age, and had to initiate to protect his sister at such a young age, even Gojo was surprised to see how matured Megumi was already at the age of 6. Its really sad that a fandom cares more about powers than a character's depth. A lot has to be also blamed on Gege, he didnt give Megumi enough screentime for the fans to empathise with him. So most stupid fans in jjk doesnt see the character's depth.
I've always thought that it was peculiar that no matter what he achieved, no matter what progress he made, Megumi was never once proud of his ability.
We never see him chase after that sense of accomplishment, of that sense of freedom you get when you're at your peak.
He was always a sorcerer, but he never cared about jujutsu, it was just a means to an end for someone else. Never for his own personal satisfaction.
He has so much potential yet he lacks any greedy desires to grab onto it, Hell he can’t even see his own shadow to get a clear idea who he really is.🐱
Something tells me this situation with sukuna will lead to him realizing his potential but I feel he will twist Gojo words into a villainous greed that might shock the fandom...
The timing is crazy ahahahah
What an amazing take👏 this give insight to Megumi and kinda changes my view on him even though I wished he would’ve reached all his potential

Yep, fantastic as expected. I really loved how you talked about having a sense of self, because that's something that I started really thinking about after Sukuna's praise of Todo during his reappearance and it really lines up so well with the story.
From my interpretation, having a strong sense of self, really understanding and KNOWING the individual that you are, is one of if not the most important thing for realizing your potential as a Jujutsu Sorcerer. When you examine the characters, it makes SO much sense looking at it this way, too.
You already mentioned Yuji, Sukuna, and Gojo and these three characters are all great examples of sorcerers with an undeniable sense of self and identity. In particular, Yuji and Gojo actually become STRONGER as they start to understand themselves better, just like how you mentioned with Megumi letting his shadow out. Even Sukuna during his fights has moments where he becomes stronger because he's presented with things that TEST his very sense of self and his ideals - people like Gojo "The New Age Strongest" in his eyes, and Maki, a person "whose very nature defies Jujutsu Sorcery"
Something that I started really thinking about though, was how much this applies to so many other characters in the story. All of the strongest sorcerers in the series, the ones able to reach their true potential, share this same undeniable sense of Self. Mei Mei, Yuki, Geto, Kenjaku, Yuta, Todo, Nanami. These are characters who understand themselves, both as people, and as sorcerers. I don't know if this was something Gege was going for, but I love this interpretation regardless! Great video 👌
Everyone needs to remember that Megumi is 15 years old and has been through so much shit so he shouldn't be blamed for not fighting back and he's at a point where he just wants to die
Most of shonen is 15 years olds suffering yet still choosing to fight regardless...
and that changes anything how? why are we judging megumi for what other shonen protags would do and not megumi for what he does do?
My hatred of Megumi is purely theatrical, my true hatred is placed with Gege Akutami, for killing all of my favourite characters and creating Potential Man, rather than creating Megumi Fushiguro

If anything megumi coming back would fill the Ryomen Sukuna role since it’s a title not a name apparently. He’s now officially had the most of sukunas CE running through his body and definitely the most time under fighting tension and sense apparently the host retain the muscle memory of the symbiote which is basically what he is in finger form on top of the upgrades that sukuna gave to his remaining 10 shadows which might just come back to life with his chimera shadow garden who knows 🤷🏽♂️ it’s incomplete so maybe once he comes back and gets his awakening he can revive them all in the shadow garden or fuse them for that big skeleton thing. Back to my original message tho hopefully he snaps and becomes the new big bad guy to stand against yujis ultimate good. Just to keep the cycle going of the 2 strongest being ideologically opposed to avoid the most over used shonen finisher with the world being saved 😂
I always say it's bumgumi but I do like his character, hope he comes back somehow even after adapting to gojo and getting hollow purpled and all that
Unfortunately for Megumi and all young men, to realize your true potential is going to take suffering. The greater the potential the more you will have to overcome, whatever happens happens. It's all about your perspective of growth, do you see your life as a burden? Or maybe a means of achieving the greatest honor any of us can hope for? To be loved for who we really are and touch the lives of the people we care for. PEACE 🎉
Finnally the goat is recognized
People who make fun of or criticize Megumin are missing the point. By not putting themselves in his shoes they make it laughable easy to judge him when those same people would crumble on the spot if they lost even one person who’s close to them. Nothing he went through makes it easy to bounce back so quickly yet at all. Speaking from experience. Losing loved ones changes you and your motivation.
I'm keeping my Megumi stocks regardleas of what others say. And I really hope Yuji's words from last chapter were heard by him (kinda like how Sukuna got involved whenever Mahito touched Yuji's soul)
A realization came to me, it's probably summed up or said in this video but, it's the fact that megumi isn't able to get to his strongest sense of self because he was too busy trying to survive as a child, he wasn't able to form a sense of self outside of how worthless he was to his father and people caring about him goes against what he knows
I hope megumi gets to do something cool in the sukuna fight.. he was the one who started it all when he met yuji

Okay, read it now. I think I'm kind of upset that as of right now (There's like 5 chapters left) we never got to see a fully realized Chimera Shadow Garden. At the same time, I don't know if it would have been as satisfying for the reasons you mentioned. If he ever actually hit that ceiling, would it have been within character, I doubt it. I think the most repressed part of Megumi isn't his anger it's his compassion. He just actively represses any compassion for people he deems "bad" compared to tsumiki even himself.
He's genuinely fascinating as he operates on his own moral compass and its endlessly compassionate/forgiving when it comes to people he deems "good" like yuji, tsumiki, yuta, maki but he completely shuts down that part of himself when it comes to toji or himself or Reggie or remi and thus has to rely on tsumiki's moral beliefs.
Everyone else has a consistent moral compass but not him.
Like gojo has a consistent moral compass and he extended it to everyone including sukuna, geto same goes for Yuji but for Megumi its a toss up of whatever your first impression is on him.
Just beautiful

So Megumi not living up to his potential is in fact….fatherless behavior
I love Megumi, it’s just that I believe Gege messed up what Megumi would actually say to Yuji when he tried to bring him back from Sukuna.
He made Megumi sound as if he didn’t care about the lives that he cares for were being taken, the same lives that are fighting for his sake.
I understand that being bathed in the pool on top of having the death of his sister and Gojo would make him unable to get up and fight, but it seemed like he was UNWILLING to, like he didn’t care anyone else would die even though they’re fighting for him against the greatest threat ever.
I wish he said something along the lines of “I’m sorry, but I just can’t, Yuji.”
Because with this, Megumi’s would be consistent even in this moment where he’s absolutely shattered.
