I think it's good to have both small and large watermelons -- small families (like the two people in my household) can use a small melon, while large families like yours may want the big melons. So keep going, and keep growing!

It's lovely to do your own landrace varieties - it's how regional and family Heirloom varieties begin! When you find one (or several) you really like, you keep planting those to reinforce their diverse genetics and the particular growing conditions. Saving seeds means you can then name that seed blend "The Good Lower Alabama Watermelon" or something. 😁

      Pffffttthhhh!! 😆
Nahhhh, I guess I'm just coordinated & also aware of my actions and surroundings.
It's something I learned very early in life bcuz I was not a child wrapped in bubblewrap.
Scissors aren't scary when you're aware.
No need to worry myself over it.
Teach the kids at a young age to be careful & aware instead of removing the issue.
Kids don't have to get hurt by such things in order to learn.
      Besides-
How will they ever learn if there's always a helicopter buzzing around them creating that "safety bubble" ???
The answer is- they won't learn.
THAT'S when they become a danger to themselves & others.
      Just sayin...

I threw all my old watermelons into my compost for the 2nd year. The compost got hot enough to break down into soil but not hot enough to kill the seeds. Fast forward there is watermelon vine stretching across my entire back yard throughout the entire garden. I have no idea how many melons are out there but most of the crops seem to love the vine keeping the soil moist for them. So I feel ya!

He seems so disappointed that they are small, but the reason I only buy one a year is because we can't eat that much before it goes bad. I would love to grow small ones that we could eat for one meal and not feel bad about wasting the rest, or filling up an entire refrigerator shelf with leftovers.

I can't stop thinking of names for the new varieties!!
    Kiel's Black
    Or
    Ezekiel's Black
And if it's yellow inside -
    Kiel's Black Gold !
    Let's just name them ALL !!! 😂
    Watermelon is my FAVORITE fruit!
I planted some seeds for the 1st time this year, but I got a late start, so I don't know if they'll produce any fruit?
    But I'm extremely optimistic nonetheless!!!
I took the seed from a Texas grown watermelon, one of those giant sized watermelons like the biggest long one Ezekiel has!
    BTW - His harvest looks
    JUST GLORIOUS!!!
    Congratulations Ezekiel !!!!!
Since I'm located in Central Tx,
& the watermelon I got the seed from probably grew within 200 miles of my location, I figured that was a good start for seed!!
(200 miles is just the same as a next door neighbor over here in Texas, and pretty much the same weather in any direction.)
Since I bought the melon from the grocery store I have no idea the variety.
    But it said Texas grown!
(We have a really good grocery store that buys produce from the local farmers.)
    The watermelon was super sweet,
& just perfect in every way!
Which is why I decided to plant those particular seeds.
I planted them in sort of a compost pile... (sort of...)
(And I was thinking of you DTG sneaking up on your compost pile and "accidentally" dropping your seeds while doing it!)
The only compost pile I have is a 4 foot deep bed of 1 year old woodchips.
It's only about half way broken down.
It's also about a 30 foot long bed full of those chips! 4 truck loads!
The temperature deep inside stays at about 95° these days.
    And I rarely water it.
It would probably be hotter inside if we had more rain, but we're in our 3rd year of drought right now, so the woodchips are only 95° & slow to decompose.
I'm just waiting for that big bed of chips to turn into rich soil!!
Meanwhile, I'm trying out some watermelons!
Although, with 7 watermelon vines growing in it, I am going to have to start watering it now!!!
Anyway, the seeds sprouted right away & are just now starting to take off into vines!!
It's all very exciting to me bcuz I've never grown watermelon before!
Luckily, we have a really long growing season, so even if I have to wait until September to have homegrown watermelon, so be it.
(It will probably still be hot in September, might even be hot into October!)
Any homegrown watermelon will be extremely welcome at any time!!!
If anyone has any tips for me,
    I'm all 👂's !

I wish I could let my gardens grow like that, but then I wouldn’t be able to walk in there, we have waaaayyyyy too many snakes here….😭 love how the watermelons are of soo many different varieties!
