Mary Jones has it all: a husband, a kid, a lovely house with frilly window treatments in the kitchen, and, of course, the 250 pound Ironrite that sits in the middle of her living room! These contraptions were made to make ironing easier.. No wait! It was made so that you would WANT to do ironing! The machine, which looks hopelessly dangerous and complicated is operated by pressing on levers with your thighs (!!) and letting the rollers press the clothes in the proccess (watch those fingers!) Why it's so easy, you can do it blindfolded! (yes, that is shown). An amazing contraptual film, nice color, and totally insane. Highly reccomended viewing!
I inherited one of these Ironrite machines about 15 years ago and found a similar video on the internet to learn how to use it. It works very well and really is faster than using a handheld iron if you need to iron something. It is absolutely fabulous for ironing tablecloths and napkins for holidays and entertaining, and it really is easier to iron a man's shirt using this rather than a handheld iron On the downside, it requires a lot of floor space and it sucks electricity. The manual indicates that you need to change the oil every year or two, which isn't too difficult. If you transport one of these machines, it is very important to keep it upright so that any oil left in the gearbox doesn't get into the motor and ruin it.
+EnneagramOne I remember these things! You know, I don't think we had perma press back then and synthetics were nasty, itchy and probably flammable. Ironing really did take up a lot of hours. I think that's how Soap Operas got started, anything to cut back on the boredom of this drudgery. This must have had a ton of appeal. I just hate the manipulative narrator saying that if you lost your beauty, it was because of all of the ironing you did!
A gotta have for ironing sheets - especially these real large queen size ones we have today.
my mother demonstrated Ironrites and taught women how to use them. she actually sat in a storefront at Northland Mall outside of Detroit. She was blindfolded. i would live to see any pictures or movies of that.

I have this same Ironrite machine and I love it. It will iron items so fast and flat, that your ironing is over with very quickly. There is no better way to iron sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths anything big is a plus on this machine. Mine even came with the manual. I love watching these old video's. Thanks for sharing.

but who irons sheets today??? why would you iron sheets? i love this machine but these days if ironing dish towels and sheets are over. you can spend time doing other things that matter.
I go to many many estate sales. Every so often I will see on of these things. Know I how they work. I bought a Singer steam press iron. That works very well for everything.
I have an Ironrite, it is very easy to use. And no I don't get burned. It does takes practice, but everything in life take practice. I won't trade my Ironrite for anything.

I just dug this out of the corner it was covered up since we bought this house in 1998 the previous owners left it here. Mine is in a mahogany case in very good condition. I came across this video by accident while looking up this unit. Well just another thing I have to sell on Facebook marketplace. The one I have is model 88.
They are a really cool machine. And there's online groups that can help you find one, repair/restore them. Its really neat.
I miss ours from my childhood. Mom brought one home and we thought she was nuts. The thing was a beast. But man did it ever iron efficiently. The three of us kids actually argued over which of us would get to use it fist and get to iron more of the clothes than others got to iron. Every now and again I see them on Craigslist and just about pull the trigger and bring one home. Some day I might. Nothing beats these for ironing sheets and a boatload of machine wash slacks or Dockers quickly. Just takes up a bunch of space. And electricity.
So funny. My mom had one of these in our kitchen for years but rarely used it. Us kids used to have fun ironing things from time to time. But eventually it was moved to the basement. I’ll have to see if it’s still there.
One of these just became available to me, but I don't have the space in my house for it. I wish I did, as I iron quite a bit. Found this video in a search for more info about the device. The cultural references are rather humorous to say the least!
My Mom kept ours in one of my brothers' bedrooms. No problem.

In 1957 my Mom bought one. I was 12 years old and she taught me how to do my Dad and 2 older brothers shirts and Levis.
In 1967 I took a home ec class at the U of A. The teacher did not know how to use it so I taught her and the class.
In 1989 I was visiting Linda Ronstadt at her 2nd home in Tucson. She had one in her guest house. I taught her how to use it which requires touching a person's legs. She entertained often and loved being able to iron her table cloths and napkins.
She had just arrived from her house in San Fransico in one of the 1st Lexus LS400 sedans sold in the US. They were very pricey but she could afford it.

Cool machine but reminds me how very diff my life would have been if I was born 40 yrs earlier.
I was thinking this was a silly idea, but it actually looks ergonomic and more efficient! Then its failure must be owing to high expense and more informal dress at the office.
The fact they took up a lot of space and electricity may have also prevented some families from purchasing or keeping these machines. Kinda hard to beat a regular iron when it comes to portability and low electricity use. Then again, if it took twice as long or longer to iron something with a standard iron, I guess the iron may not be as efficient after all.
My grandma says it's because polyester was invented and didn't need to be ironed.
@@rachelh5211 Funny enough, they don’t use that much electricity, at least compared to regular irons. Per my Kill-o-watt, it uses about 1200-1500 watts, while my good iron uses 1600-1795. They do take up a lot of space, but I got the one in the wooden cabinet, so it sits in my family room looking like an old stereo. My cats love to lay on top of it.
@@CZEdwards Interesting; thanks for sharing. Now that I think about it, my regular iron makes my lights flicker or dim, whereas I've never had this happen with other appliances. Not sure whether that's relevant to the amount of energy it consumes.
@@rachelh5211 It absolutely is. Most household circuits (one breaker/fuse worth) are either 10 amp or 15 amp, and something drawing 1800 watts is straining that limit. (I have that problem, too.)
I actually remembering burning a few items on this baby but I think I was a baby myself when asked to use it. It was kind of scary. ;)

Takes as much time as using a standard iron. IMO
At 13 years of age, I could iron one of my Dad's or older brothers' shirts in about 2 minutes. A pair of Levis in one minute. In the 1950s teenage boys would only wear ironed Levi gens.
Interesting but I couldn't store it under my sewing machine cabinet like my 9lb old black and decker iron.
Men's shirts are just as easy to iron as a napkin. I don't think so!!!!!!

Nothing insane here, America was better, stronger, safer and more in keeping with it's constitution. Would be great to find women like this today. I would buy her an iron-rite! A far more homogeneous society based on Northern European culture. The nation functioned much better. Cities were cleaner, people left their doors unlocked, gun rights were virtually unrestricted but crime was very low! In came the 1965 immigration act and the nation fell apart, crime ridden, Bill of rights under siege, job outsourcing and an oligarchy of interest groups who pull strings over the open pockets of our politicians, a true mess.
