From one Darren obsessed with the sky to another, thanks for the ride along mate. How do you maintain separation in these environments? Are there set rules or is it down to etiquette?
You're welcome and I'm glad you like it. Yes there are rules - 1. Don't crash into each other. 2. Thermalling - there is a direction set for thermalling close to the take-off / in the start cylinder. So we are all turning the same direction. Other etiquette includes techniques for joining thermals that other gliders are in, giving way to gliders coming up beneath you (who are obviously flying better than you in order to go up faster). All rules and etiquette are trumped by Rule. no.1 though. In these big comps it can get quite crowded and you have to be on your lookout, though the general standard of pilot is very good.
Have any good resources regarding VG use and application? I understand how it changes the shape of the wing, but I don't understand the pros/cons of VG/no VG and when you would favor each setting. Thanks for the videos.
I have mentioned vg and how to use it in practice... though I can't remember which videos. I'll try do some more discussion on VG - maybe on my next flight.

Sorry about that! I've updated the title of this video now. The championship was based in a town called Tolmezzo in northern Italy and we flew from various nearby sites such as Meduno and Germona. The location was close to the border with Austria and Slovenia so on certain days we had tasks that took us over the borders into those countries. I'll make sure to make it clear in future videos and perhaps show the location on a map (like I think I did with my Ager series). Thanks for pointing it out.

Yeah. Just why I go flying. To hang out in a cluster, always looking for someone to collide with.
