Long-time lurker, first-time comment :-) Coming back after a long time away and ramping up to play 30s 'straight 4/4' and gj with a trumpet/cornet-lead quintet/sometimes sextet, this is exactly where I find myself. Every thought & word here is gold and I KNOW the time and editing that went into it. Rhythm skill is such an elusive animal - at least to me - in that the more I 'try' to learn it, the more it falls apart. It really does have to come through osmosis after endless listening and noticing - if not hopefully natural feel, but you nailed pretty much every aspect to consider, and yeah, each one could be broken out into a separate mIcro-lessons (and I'd hang on every one talking of shameless nerdism :-D ) Thanks Denis!

Hey Dennis many thanks for this video awesome to see and hear your analysis of this style, the differences in the rhythm are what really define the sound of the band in this genre. Played in a hot club quartet type swing band as the rhythm guitarist in the 80s(before the phrase gypsy jazz even lol) used ovation guitars playing hot club tunes Bireli style kinda maybe lol. eventually stopped playing this style and guitar for a long time have to say though absolutely addicted to hearing this style of rhythm love how its changed and evolved to the newer (French?) gypsy style (probably not new to the gypsy's Sinti or Manouche though) pushing the swing feel on beats 2-4 you can see this just by watching the right hand in some players keeps the sound exciting and moving forward in feel, love it ! have a nice time in the US and France bravo !

8:30 what you say there is so true and not a problem when lead players communicate but some lead players instead of telling you what they want just stay silent.

The Keep has a jam on Wednesdays. It's a bit mixed with some gypsy jazz, trad jazz, and bebop.
