I was lucky enough to spend a week in Hawaii this year. It is a truly magical place. She’s not wrong about the culture being washed away. I was only on 1 island but it seemed like there was almost more Japanese influence on the island than the indigenous people had. Pan-pacific folks are being wiped out of the history books right in front of us. When are we gonna live and let live???

Tourism is the primary Hawaiian industry. Without a steady and reliable income, the Aloha spirit would be going hungry. While you can't sell Aloha, it can used to attract tourists. You can't sell the beaches and sunshine either, but they can draw income for the state.

Compound this with the fact that disasters disproportionately impact low income natives in less developed areas, who have a much harder time getting relief and less resources to use. The people who cannot recover from their losses are considered a nice bonus for the rich overseas moguls who buy up the land for more hotels.

My family is planning to visit Hawaii in February and I was thinking of going, but hearing these takes from the perspective of native Hawaiians, I'm not sure I want to go now. I would genuinely feel unwelcome and bad as a white person from the mainland. My brother recently built a modest house on the Big Island that he rents out on airbnb. I see now that he's part of the problem. Yet tourism brings a lot of money to the Hawaiian economy. Of course, most of that money lines the pockets of non-Hawaiians and major corporations, huh. I can see how over development can play a part in the Maui Wildfires, but having too many vistors and not enough indigenious people leading to wildfires? yeah no. If that weretrue this wouldn't have been the first time that these wildfires were so devestating.
Would the wildfires still have happened? Yes. They would have been just as devestating, but in more localized region rather than being as widespread as they are. So in this way over development can play a factor, but having too many tourists and not enough indigenous people is simply grasping at straws to explain something.
Seriously the undertone that People should stay in their own spaces, is myopic and unrealistics given the course of human migration (and as far as historic migrations go, native Hawaiians aren't native to Hawaii. They are the result of migration too. They just happned to be on the island sooner and longer than anyone else.)
Again, Over development I can agree with, but too many tourists and not enough Native Hawiians? Yeah, not so much.

ETHNIC CLEANSING is the systematic forced removal of ethnic, racial, and religious groups from a given area, with the intent of making a region ethnically homogeneous. Along with direct removal, extermination, deportation or population transfer, it also includes indirect methods aimed at forced migration by coercing the victim group to flee and preventing its return, such as murder, rape, and property destruction.[3][4][5] It constitutes a crime against humanity and may also fall under the Genocide Convention, even as ethnic cleansing has no legal definition under international criminal law.

On the other hand they do appreciate the benefits of tourism, i guess.
But we see increasing numbers of wildfires all over the globe in the last five years, which are the hottest globally since the start of recording them. The predicted consequences of climate change are showing, plain and simple. It is getting bad very quick by the years. Today it is where you go for holidays, tomorrow it is your homeplace.

It wasn't tourism which caused the wildfires. It was the importation of grasses, the abandonment of sugar and pineapple plantations, and a perfectly-tracking hurricane.
Without tourism, the old ways would fade even faster than they have.

The people of Hawaii need to look to their state government for mistakes and to change things. When Ellis bought an entire Hawaiian island to create a place for the uber wealthy, who let that island be sold in the first place? If the electric company isn't responding to threats, the government needs to crack down on them. It keeps getting blamed on tourism.
