Parakeets are extremely social birds and will fall into a deep depression without someone to befriend. Constant handling from everyone at home or a few parakeet friends works great for this. They also get bored extremely easy, so I hope you put in lots of different elevation perches, mirrors, toys, and treats! Millet is one of the best parakeet treats you can get and is a very high priority reward for any training!

If you want a parrot to bond with, handle, and play with then adding another parrot could backfire on you because they will bond with each other and not care about you. If you give a parrot a lot of love and attention then YOU become one of their flock and they will sit on your shoulders preening you like they would another bird. If you just want parrots to look at and NOT interact with the YES getting them a friend (or a couple of friends) is the right thing to do. I will also say that your last sentence was wrong. Parrots can 100% be left alone. They will not die if they are alone. Hell my Hermes, who I rescued 14ish years ago, has been alone for the last 7 years and he is still a happy, healthy boy. Due to his past owners being aholes he is not handleable so I just sit next to his cage and talk to him and he talks back to me with his little chitter chatters. He has everything a parakeet could want. Tony's parakeet is still young so bringing him a friend should be no problem but getting a friend for parrot that is already old could be a huge problem... They could fight 24/7 and your parrot could kill, or be killed, by the new parrot. So you have to be very careful AND you need to slowly introduce them to each other. You should only get your parrot a friend if you're not willing to take the time to make your parrot part of your family and give them enough attention.

Also I tricked my boy with treats! Hold the treat between your forefinger and thumb, try not to let your other fingers stick out all scary, and hopefully when they try to get a better angle on the treat they'll step onto your finger. Do this enough they'll associate your hands with treats. I then transitioned to having the treat on the palm of my hand, this let my bird know that even if I could, I wouldn't grab and restrain him. Now he hops out every morning into my hand, and we have a lil cuddle before he wakes up properly for the day! Honestly if your bird seems wary of your hands, don't worry. My boy used to bite me so hard just for putting my hand in his cage, it just takes time and patience! Don't give up and don't rush anything!

They all have a lighter pinkish/purplish color when they're young but once they hit maturity the cere (aka the part above the beak) will change. Males typically get blue ceres and females get light tan-brownish ceres. So we don't know whether its a boy or girl yet.

Make sure to get it one or two friends. Those birds tend to get depressed if they're alone. A few sticks to perch on and some partot toys will make it happier too.
Candle, Cloudy, Cleo, Sunny FYI the parakeet is actually a budgie girl you can tell as boys have blue noses and girls have brown and the one you were given was the wild vereent. BTW they're native to Australia 🇦🇺 and I know because I own 4 soon to be 7 (they mated!) And I also read books about them.
Btw parakeets like natural perches not the smooth wooden ones, I have one and don’t get sand paper it hurts they’re feet, also don’t get any mirrors to keep them in the cage, it can give them joy at first but when they realize it’s just them and not another bird they get very lonely, also parakeets like to be in pairs or groups so yeah.

It is a female. Parakeets can be sexed by the color of the bridge of the nose. Looks light colored in the video so would be a female..❤️❤️

FYI the parakeet is actually a budgie girl you can tell as boys have blue noses and girls have brown and the one you were given was the wild vereent. BTW they're native to Australia 🇦🇺 and I know because I own 4 soon to be 7 (they mated!) And I also read books about them.

Btw parakeets like natural perches not the smooth wooden ones, I have one and don’t get sand paper it hurts they’re feet, also don’t get any mirrors to keep them in the cage, it can give them joy at first but when they realize it’s just them and not another bird they get very lonely, also parakeets like to be in pairs or groups so yeah.
Mirrors can make a great toy for parakeets, but it is CRUCIAL that there are other birds or constant handling to imprint with, you're right!
