I like to think that Hermione restored her parents' memories once everything was safe again. Plus, I never realised that Catelyn Stark, AKA Michelle Fairley, was Hermione's mother in the seventh film, having replaced another actress from the second movie.

The part if the movies that really passed me off if what happens to the elder wand. In the book, he uses it to repair his wand, which I think shows a desire to simply be himself and that he has no interest in power. But in the movies, he simply destroys the elder ward.

    • @Inkyminkyzizwoz

Actually, on balance it probably was better that he destroyed it rather than returning it to Dumbledore's grave, because in the book he said that if he died a natural death without being defeated then its power would die with him, but as he was planning to become an Auror that was a VERY big 'if'!

I've always wondered if there was an Australian/Oceanic wizarding community/school. I know there's an Australian quiditch team, but I think that's the only other reference to Australia in the series. I feel like Hermione would've told her parents what she was going to do before she did it. She's going to bury all of their memories of her anyway, so there's no real harm in being upfront about how and why. If the Death Eaters already know who her parents are and can find them, her charm isn't going to stop them from killing them; all it will do is give them extra security and make them harder to find, and prevent them from risking themselves to find her.

I'm currently writing a fanfic that is called With the Parents of My Enemy and while it is a post war dramione fic, i focus heavily on Hermione restoring her parents based on the film adaptation of the oblivate.
I created a "total recall" spell that she actually practices on St Mungo resident Gilderoy Lockhart first and actually restores his memory though he's still in the hospital until the Wizengamot can decide what to do with him.
I felt that the Grangers deserved to be more than just a prop and have given them personality and presence in the story. It's still a WIP but i update it regularly as it's my passion project.

I think it’s being too critical and purist to say the movies “got it wrong” in this instance and I’d attribute it more to the fact that that we’re dealing with two different formats of media here.
Film is delivered by things you can see not just information you read like a book, and a scene where Hermione exposits what she did to her parents would work _fine_ but the key rule in film is “show, don’t tell.” We know what obliviate is, and we can clearly see what’s happening as it shows us just how much Hermione is willing to sacrifice to keep them safe without using any words to do it, but just through watching her memories literally disappear before her eyes.
Yes, the book’s explanation is superior because it can be more detailed, but that’s what books are for and movie scenes that are 100% adaptations of some book scenes just don’t work at all. I don’t think this was due to laziness on the part of the writers and director but a conscious creative choice to simplify this scene to a spell we already know rather than explaining a new one, and also taking the opportunity to showcase how emotional this was for Hermione and the impact that the war was having on people besides just Harry ina way that fit better with a visual medium.

You have to take the movies and the books as two different perspectives on the same thing there's a logical reason why they had Hermione obliviate her parents because they'd already established the spell in chamber of secrets and it gave the decision much more weight because of its permanency which better illustrated the sacrifices they were willing to go to to defeat Voldemort a casual viewer having not read the books would not understand the difference between a mind-altering spell and a memory erasing spell so it was simpler and carried more weight visually for the story

I'm a little worried about the Secrets Of Dumbledore trailer with Grindelwald talking about a war on muggles. The thing that made Grindelwald interesting in COG was that he didn't want to wipe them out, and he wanted to use them for what he believed they were good for. If they abandon that angle in favour of him becoming a muggle murdering psychopath, then they run the risk of taking away what stopped people from comparing him to you know who. Until now Grindelwald stood out as another great villain on his own merits and motivations. So I hope I'm wrong and the impression I got from the trailer was just misleading

I said this in the original video and I'll say it again: The movie may have messed up what actually happened, but an explanation of what happened to them in the movie canon is not unsalvagable. My interpretation is that the movie makers decided to just combine all of the possible memory charms into the one spell for the sake of simplicity, so obliviate is actually a multi-functional charm that produces different results depending on intent, circumstances and how much power was put into it.
Think about it; the last time casual movie watchers would have seen obliviate in action prior to the fantastic beast movies was Lockhart's botched attempt on Ron and Harry, which obvious went very, _very_ wrong. So why wouldn't we expect more varied results from someone who not only knows what they're doing, but casts it with a wand that actually works properly?

The way they portrayed Hermione's actions with her parents in the movie always bothered me, and I never felt it fit with the way it was portrayed in the book . The movie made it feel more serious, sad, and permanent, whereas Hermione made it clear in the book that, if she survived, she would track her parents down after the second wizarding war was over and remove the spell. @@LovemyDrones I learned about apparation's limits from a Super Carlin Bros video.
I *believe* that port keys and floo powder are further reaching. At least I know port keys are, they can be enchanted to take people to a specific place, like Scotland to Brazil (such as I think we see in the trailer for Secrets of Dumbledore).
I'm not sure if floo powder has any other weaknesses besides pronunciation (like distance) - maybe/hopefully someone more knowledgeable could answer this.

This is interesting, but if we would of known about any extra stuff for knowledge then JK should have added them back in the last book which is Harry Potter & The Cursed Child so that being said means and is clear indication that what’s said in the video could be wrong it could just be someone saying like it be nice if she brought back their memories but what if she didn’t I mean if she did a cloaking spell instead then why not just do the memory charm to whipped their minds thinking they had a kid but didn’t the next but it does beg the question weather or not if she knew she Should have done it earlier in her earlier yrs before leading up to her 7th year I mean she knew Harry was in danger even though they remained close as friends but if that’s the case then she should have whipped their minds long ago I’d say she should have done it in her 4, 5, 6, year but I think the earlier the better I’d say: her 5 year because that’s when things we’re getting to be more dangerous for Harry and the rest of friends too not to mention Hermione as well.

Am I the only one who doesn’t get worked up about the differences between the books and movies? Like at all, I genuinely do not get any form of upset. Maybe I’m just living up to my Hufflepuff status, but I’m in love with any form of media given to me even the most controversial for others.
