Yeah it remained so popular because these early episodes made such an big impression..without being too cheesy, they really did have the perfect blend of humor and drama which is unfortunately something they lost the ability to do in the later years..

You could see Tom Oliver laughing a bit at 35:39 when Ian Smith started to get angry as Jelly Belly then fully lost it at 36:00 after he shouted ''But Madge''. I bet some of those scenes were improvised. You could see Jason Donovan trying not to laugh.
The combination of good writing good acting with the exactly the right blend of humour and drama made Neighbours a classic once as shown here. Should have been axed many years before now. Thank goodness it has finally been laid to rest !

Television in general now is terrible, not just the newer episodes of this. Its far too looks orientated so you end up with alot of talentless actors. And this has been going on for a long time now, but not only this, we have the woke inclusion to deal with as well.

Tom was obviouslly channelling Jack from Number 96 when he started playing Lou. I'm glad they toned him down and made him a more sympathetic character but not without his charm.

Love Neighbours, but this is actually appalling to watch, the writers were mocking Harold (and anyone who gets bullied) as much as Lou is mocking him in the script. Then, when Harold finally stands up for himself no one supports him, not even his fiancé. It's really good that attitudes have changed since these victim-blaming old days.

Lou was a bully but Harold did himself no favours. He was the one who kept antagonising Lou. If he was civil instead of confrontational when they first met, things would have been different.
Mrs Mangel was English but the rest are Aussie. Anne Haddy was from Quorn, SA. Harold is from Victoria I think but occasionally sounds almost British. Anne Charleston is Aussie but pretends to be Irish in some interviews for some reason.

A lot of nieghbours cast has English ancestry and many are born in the UK from niegbours cast and left to go to the sun from the cold UK.
