Wasn't the original axle a splined shaft? The new axle was only cylindrical, hammered onto the gear by a sledge hammer and welded on one side. It is just a matter of time when this gear axle will break again.
While there are a number of issues I have with this, u would like to say as usual, I appreciate the resourcefulness of these workers. Having said that, I can see these are young men, possibly apprenticing on this small project, there are some safety things when working around lathes that I have to bring up. I can accept the steel toed sandals, etc but wearing a hoody with tassles hanging is absolutey UNACCEPTABLE - that's Fatal not just a broken toe! I'm sure these young men deserve to be able to grow old and carry on this trade.
