    Also as far as I know that cross has other associations and pre-dates Christianity (anyone who knows a bit more might be able to clarify or correct this).

    What I mean by mixing up is that unfortunately I see an awful lot of people mixing the Wiccan concept of Maiden, Mother and Crone into the triple-goddesses of Early Ireland- they are not the same of course :) (I just wanted to make sure (and you're grand!)because as a pagan and someone who is in college studying Archaeology and Celtic Civilisation it can get a bit annoying when it happens XD)
    You are right in the mix of faiths-in fact Abrahamic religions may have a root in Zoroastrianism

    • @animalsfirst3
      @animalsfirst3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well in my opinion is worse when the people make Brigid become a saint,( a Catholic creation) when the Goddess is kidnapped by the Catholic church/Christianity and become a saint , change everything what she was. That mix is awful. She is a Goddess , pagan and always will be, she doesn't belong to the Christianity and never will be. I don't make tis connection.

    My Father was from Turners Cross
    His father was the oldest surviving member of the original Garda Siochana from 1922
    He fought in MONS then returned + fought with the West Cork IRA
    When the truce occured he joined the free state Garda on the recommentdations of the West Cork IRA Brigadier (I still have the letter/ references )
    4 weeks later they were fighting each other
    They were BOTH god-fearing men
    A priest would usually bless them before an "action" and then hear confession if they survived

    St. Brigid worshipped within Christianity may not be a goddess however her attributes certainly hail back to the older figure.
    I never said she worshipped another? Why would she? You need to learn to read your facts before dismissing something or claiming to know anything about it.
    If you are going to claim to worship something you should at least do the reading of where she comes from. Look up the Saint's Lives, a parish priest may be able to point you to them if you cannot find them online.

    @cathbhar1 Thank you for your feedback. This video was made based on the mythology and folklore, not science.
    As far as the genetics of the Irish people not being "Celtic", from what I understand, the Celts were never a race to begin with. I thought that it was widely accepted {among academics at least} that the Celts were simply a grouping of people who shared some similar cultural traits {i.e. language, art, world views}.
    Anyhow, with this research, where is the modern population from?

  • @chaoskittenxo
    @chaoskittenxo 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There may indeed have been an abbess called Brigid but her story and attributes have been mixed up and/or overlain with the older material. That is pretty much considered a fact.
    Don't take this as an attack on your beliefs, take it as information from an academic who studies this as part of her university degree. I'm also Irish too.

  • @chaoskittenxo
    @chaoskittenxo 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There's also a theory that the sheela's are so ... well, 'ugly' (XD).... because it was thought they might have also served as warnings about the 'evil, lustful' woman. But no-one knows for sure. XD
    You'd be surprised what pops up in Early Irish Christian culture actually, it's a bit different to Christianity elsewhere. :)
    They were found on some cathedrals too I think. Be careful not to mix up ancient and modern pagan imagery though. :)

    Excellently produced video. I was hooked from the start.Here in East Kilbride in out country park we have a tall wooden column with a wooden statue of (a rather masculine and pretty much naked if I recall) St. Bride standing on the top with her arms streched out to either side looking as if she is about to a dive. She is rather the worse for weather now, being I would estimate about 40 years old. Why the artist represented her quite like that I do not know.

    Dont misinterpret me because of my atheism
    "when the light of heaven is shining look to the heavens , when the light of the heavens is dim , look to the earth "
    One of the BIGGEST and WORST deceits of the catholic church is the idea that YOU are a sinner
    That your flawed , or imperfect
    Your NONE of these
    Your human
    Thats why christ taight "god IN YOU"
    "kindom of heaven is WITHIN (and without)
    The teachings in the gospels are nearer to BUDDHISM than they are to Catholic dogma

    In the second+ third centuries, philosophers wrote hundreds of letters to christians protesting that they were claiming these traditions as new
    The church came up with this answer (it shows how desperate they were) : DIABOLICAL MIMICR ; basically it proposed that the devil had foreknowledge that jesus would come and in order to make christianity look silly in advance,he created lots of identical scenarios(thousand yrs earlier) Mithras was born on Xmass ,died on good friday + rose again at easter

    Hello, firstly St. Brigid was never actually canonised as a saint- look it up. Many hagiographers (they are the people who study the religious texts and saint's lives) have also pointed out that many of the attributes of St. Brigid are also attributes of the early Celtic goddess who was widely found across Europe. Have you ever read the Lives of St. Brigid? They are the texts which have all the stories you know about St. Brigid. I study this at degree level so I know what I am talking about.

    Brighid was a godess
    Very similar to Vesta / diana (hence the fire and vestal virgins )
    The pagan tradition was adapted to fit christian beliefs (transmogrification )
    Therefore the "sacred fire" was still attended to by vestal virgins , the only difference is that their name changed to NUNS during the christian times
    Thats why the church insisted that the fire be stopped because it was too close to the pagan predesessor
    The EUCHARIST was practiced LONG before christ (hes new to the scene)

    You showed so many pictures of St. Brigid of Ireland a CHRISTIAN saint!!

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well nothing is written about them , so its all theory
    Not ancient statues , but ancient symbols
    All thats known about them is that they were used by some monasteries , but likely have their root in pre-christian culture .
    Christians would never have come up with these (im sure they copied them )
    Like Brighid , there was the triad - bride ,sister and hag (or mother )
    The sheelas are the hag
    Theres plenty of pagan artifacts that depict the same idea (even Kali)

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah ,
    They are
    Thats why theyre described as "hags" or "crones"
    In christian monasterys the monks (and maybe citizens ) were supposed to avert their eyes away from the shiela , to remind them to beware the sins of the flesh
    I think its definite that the monks used them that way.
    Mix up christian + pagan ?
    Well , theres hundreds of years where both overlapped
    The druidic tonsure was still used
    Christianity is a hybrid of dozens of pagan mystery religions
    Its highly mixed

    Its not secularism , its human nature
    No matter how bad society is now , its a lot lot better than any time in recent history (except maybe prewar US )
    Unfortunately theres more sophistacated means of violence
    The thing with the irish priesthood is that in the past it was considered high status to have a son become a priest. So "spirituality" wasnt their motivation
    Right up till recently priests had the same authority that druids had
    The Church was never a good tool in Ireland

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thought ye didnt believe in "hell" or "heaven " ?
    The Pope declaring that heaven and hell are not places but states of mind is saying , by extension that so is good / evil / god / devil
    About the jews foreknowledge ; Jesus did specific things (Q) "so that the prophesy may be fulfilled "
    Alexander and others did the same
    There was a prophesy that whoever threw a spear across the Tigris would be king, So Alexander arranged for it to happen
    Jesus deliberately acts to "fullfil the prophesies"

    Where did I say that St Brigid is/was a Goddess? In both the video and in the comments I am quite clear that some people feel or suspect that they are the same person. There are people who believe that when the Irish started converting to Christianity, the Church turned one of the Irish Goddesses into a Saint to win over more converts. It is not unheard of that the Church did this, along with adopting other traditions and holidays.

    Id prefer gloomy and realist rather than exciting and fantastic
    Once you open up to the idea of "gods" then literally anything can be justified
    Anything can be justified with the phrase "god works in mysterious ways"
    And anyway . Its actually very liberating and empowering to know that we are human. That we dont need to search for gods , that everything we need to see is right there to be discovered
    Do you believe in a personal God , or the one outlined in the books ?

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Its ok , I know what you mean , Ive read these things myself but wouldnt be able to repeat them fully either
    So what your saying is ;that when the Pope speaks in his capacity as "pontiff" that he is actually "pontiff" (bridge between god )?
    So that when he sits on his throne hes basically guided (possessed ) by God. And God speaks through him
    That claim has been made by every religion
    "Magisterium" comes from "magi" (same root for magic)
    The MAGI worshipped Mithras who also died on a cross

    When we post 2 replies to the same comment one can go unnoticed unless ye check the comment thread
    I think ye need to define "catholic"
    Theres a MASSIVE gulf between a christian and the "catholic faith "
    Theres an INCREDIBLE gulf between the "community " and the VATICAN
    The VATICAN has shares in the arms industry
    It excommunicated catholic priests and bishops in latin america because they preached support for the poor
    They stayed silent when Bishop romero was murdered by death squads

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So ,from what you tell me then , the pagans in the roman empire werent too bad
    Most of them worshipped a "god born to man " on Dec 25, born in a manger or cave , had 12 desciples , cured the sick and raised the dead , taught MOST of the things taught in the bible, was persecuted and died on a cross (or hung from a tree ) and was ressurected at Easter.
    Thats the case for about TWENTY FIVE pagan gods
    It seems they just got the dudes name wrong ?
    Not really "pagan" at all ?

  • @supermassvanity
    @supermassvanity 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Bridgid was a Goddess of Pagan Ireland long before Christianity arrived. The Catholic Church transformed the Goddess Brigid into Saint Bridget. It was an attempt by the Catholic Church to suppress and destroy the ancestral knowledge of what they called the pagan people of Ireland, who believed in a Goddess, elves, and fairies.

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    how do you plan to fix it ?
    two korean girls stopped me on the street (calling door to door) They couldnt speak any english
    They were telling me that " christs mother was a virgin " ( almah , acyually means young woman , not virgin ) , anyway , it took me about 20 mins to tell them I was an atheist
    Your gonna need some extraordinary charisma and new approach to gain any converts (incidently "charisma" / christ /chrism /charity all have the same verbal root)

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ill check it .
    But , would that also not be "cherry picking" ?
    Would you say that Christ ( I mean jesus because there were several Christs ) was a "humanist" ?
    Most of all , he preached to look within and not to judge
    Theyre the philosophies that have worked best since 1000 yrs before Plato
    So creating a church (as opposed to a philisophical school ) is contrary to his teachings

  • @nefaeria

    There are some who think that the Brigid assumed to be a Goddess is the same as the Saint, some folks believe they were different individuals, and there are others who would deny that either of them ever existed. Anyone who thinks that they can lay claim on absolute truth when it comes to spiritual matters is deluded. The only thing we can know for certain is that we certainly know nothing. We only have guesses.

    Your referring to crusades again
    Look , Alexius the greek emperor asked for 300 mercenaries to help with local disputes. The church and monarchy sent 100,000
    It was a political strategic manouvre. One that solved A LOT of problems and gained VAST wealth for monarchy and the church
    EVERY LORD that went on the crusade handed his estates over to the church
    No Islamic country had invaded ANYWHERE in over 5 centuries

    Can we bring the debate to the top of the page by replying to the first comments (or creating a new thread ?)
    Well , the pope said that , so if its not error then its very vague , therefore Heaven + Hell are totally open to interpretation
    He said specifically that the NT used symbolism and that Hell and heaven were "symbolic" of states of mind
    SO , if hes infallible then practically everything can be taken as symbolic
    When Jesus said "the kingdom of heaven is within" ; it was obviosly metaphor

    well , ye referred to "catholic response against moslem aggression "
    I was replying to that
    I also dont believe that their respective religions are at fault , just the organisations
    And the roman catholic church was one of those organisations
    There was the nobility and the church; Thats all there was
    There was a constant struggle for supremacy between the two (temporal supremacy)
    " you make me emperor and Ill make you pope " that was the policy from Clovis up till about 100 yrs ago

    i dont deny his literal existance
    But I do deny ANY special status that WE (thats us humans) have given him
    The 4 gospels are the "supposed " proof , but they CANT aggree on the most basic facts. Two of the gospel writers werent even alive. So we have the 2 other gospels. They cant agree on the most basic facts about him
    So, Im not going to call him a saviour on the strength of 2 very spurious ancient books
    And according to those books , he wont mind either. hes not too bothered

    The POPE DID become the largest land owner in europe
    The Church is the largest landowner in most catholic countries now along with the railways
    And what the present pope or Vatican owns NOW is the majority share in Societas Immobiliare , Europes largest real estate owwner in the 80s
    Its has HUGE stocks in the arms trade / HUGE stocks in the pharmaceutical industry , Including the PILL and CONTARACEPTION.
    The Vatican IS A government, it has its OWN BANK and it has obligation to its shareholders

    they converted everything to christianity to convert --- pagan shrines became churches . everything from the halo to crucifixion became christian symbols .
    Around the corner from me theres a templar church built on a pre-christian site .
    Theres a "sheela na gig" above the doorway (a celtic godess figure adapted to christianity .
    What do ye mean "they got what they wanted from the irish " ?

    Well , theres the problem
    Do we take the best from Christs teachings or do we follow the church patriarchs ?
    What started oout as a philosophy and a message (similar to buddhism ) turned into an organisation with a government
    And say if you follow ORIGEN (one of the church fathers) then your officially a heretic according to the "church"

    From what ye describe about them they probably didnt care about theism OR atheism. They dont sound like people that gave it any thought (I reckon they just claimed to be atheist but were agnostic)
    Are you refering to my 2 uncles being "self serving ?
    One is still a priest in LA (theres something seriously wrong with him)
    The other left the fransiscans because of the TOTAL corruption and hypocracy
    And neither of them were SUPPOSED to do anything at all
    Do ye know much about church history here ?

    Brigid was a pagan goddess. Christianity did what the could to destroy to old ways. Making a goddess into a saint was just one of the many ways. Just do some research on your own religion and you will see the truth.

    ok , but your following what other humans have interpreted and told you to believe about what jesus said
    The scriptures plainly say that " for gods people to be unmarried is ungodly " but catholic priests were banned from marriage
    The way they interpret the scriptures changes according to politics and science
    Did you know that the pope declared officially that heaven and helll "are states of mind" rather than places?
    Augistine in the 5 cent formulated "just and holy war " / jihad .

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep , Im certain
    It was a big tghing to hear it
    Ill re-check to get the exact info
    It was basically the pope adapting the church to modern times
    It DOES adapt and change (though VERY slowly)
    He was basically adapting the church as a teacher of human morals as opposed to rigid doctrines
    That was a savage idea for a savage time
    weve evolved since then
    BUT, already your attempting to fit that idea into a pre-conceived framework
    Its only true "IF"..
    So, your already interpreting before the info

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The gnostics were the original christians
    Thats why they were all banned as ROME (it was the roman Empire which created the church as the official religion ) was creating Dogma and rules to unite ("One god One emperor one religion one empire)
    WHERE did this idea of infallibility come from ?
    Because it certainly didnt come from Jesus
    (ill be back in a few hours) (late here , but tell me where or Who came up with papal infallibility ?)
    It makes sense on NO level except temporal control

    I find it very strange how you crossed from myth as in Brigid the Goddess of old, and the Catholic flesh and blood Brigid. The name might be the same but that is where the similarities stop. Saint Brigid is the most famous female leader of the early Celtic Christian Church. Founder of many monasteries of Christian nuns, including that monastery of Kildare Ireland. If people prayed to Brigid it would have been to Saint Brigid not the Goddess Brigid. Good Vid but do not cross fact with fiction

    The gospel of thomas has been describes by biblical scholars as the nearest to the actual words of Jesus (thats Thomas didymus ; The Twin )
    The Church , condemn it as heresy
    Its first words are ;
    "the kingdom of heaven is not in temples of stone , but within you and all around you ."
    In otherwords , the truth is not in a tabernacle . It in front of your eyes and omnipresent
    Thats why the church calls it heresy
    Because it removes the churches power

  • @olliephelan
    @olliephelan 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think ye put too much importance on the "church"
    Jesus didnt create any church (or preach of one )
    You should know the phrases " god in you"
    "the kingdom of heaven is within , without and all around "
    " not in temples of stone "

  • @Morgwensraven

    if you have an issue with other faiths, then perhaps some research on your own would be in order. The church, your church, adapted many deities, and other pagan mythology, holidays, and practices into its own. Why else would you have jesus born at yule when his birth was actually around easter.. Because yule/winter solstice was celebrated by the celtic peoples so the church adopted the date. Oh and how could an Irish woman be in jerusalem to make the cross? . Look it up
