25 square kilometers is meaningless, assuming it's true. If it's on the entire front it's pretty much negligeable. If it's localized, it could be some random fields. Also the question is, how much did they cost to Russia? Again this assuming you didn't just throw some dices to give me this number, or just read them from a Russian source.
As someone who is paying attention to the war since Feb 2022, it surely is amusing to see Russia fanboys saying the war is over soon for more than two years of continuous setbacks for Russia.
They are not "Turtle Tanks" but "Barn Tanks". And not "Turtle Shells" but "Barn Roofs".

The minute I saw these I knew they could protect against a drone dropping a grenade into an open hatch, maybe even protect against some anti tank missiles that strike from above.
But it was incredibly obvious they would limit visibility and limit the use of the turret.
And if a shell pentrates the shell and goes off outside the armor the blast wave might be reflected into the tank. A strong Shockwave alone can kill.
And I never thought about them turning a fire into an oven.

If a tank explodes near the woods, and nobody is there to see it, does it make a sound? No one really knows or if will we ever know. But that’s not super important. I couldn’t believe what I heard when the announcer stated that congress people who had blocked aid to Ukraine were “Russia friendly”. Those same people will tell you that the U.S. is not the world’s police. Wanting to protect our own border is not “Russia friendly”. Ukraine is not on our doorstep but Europe’s. It also can't defend itself from attacks from the side and rear since the turret can no longer swing to the side making them an easy target for Javelins, and Stugna-P attacks from the side and rear
I think it is about convincing Russian soldiers that they are protected. Any logical person can figure out that a tin roof is not going to save then from ammo that throws a tank gun 100 feet in air.

I wonder why the soldiers were permitted to put this sh*t on the tank. They are idiots, but the officer should know why such a thing is a death trap for the crew (worse than a normal T-72), cannot be fixed or maintained properly and quickly, cannot shoot well, cannot respond to threats from the sides and rear, overdemand the engine, etc.
I would think that the shell would affect the reactive armor as well
The turtle tanks increased survivability for a while there but the Ukrainians adapted.

How many tanks n armored vehicles does Russia have left? Dont they ever run out?
Russian Federation currently being supplied with military vehicles from Belarus and China. Because the Russian Federation are running out of 60 year old T61 tanks they scrapped 20 years ago.
I think Putin was preparing for this war for 20 years. He had 20 million shells at the beginning of the war. If he did not win it in the first 2 months with that type of ammo and tanks, he certainly cannot win now with half or less than what he started with.
@@BrianMartin-ph7ptI'm not finding sources to support your claim. I'm only finding evidence that Russia is producing their own tanks while China and Belarus are providing resources to do it. They act as a supply chain while Russia's economy has shifted towards a war-based economy.

As with anything. They have their pros and cons. I'm sure they are able to take one or two extra drone hits before being a mobility kill. Well, less and less everyday as Ukraine pilots adapt. It makes more sense with anti-mining vehicles. But doesn't help against arty or guided AT weapons, of course. And makes them far more vulnerable to them, actually due to limited visibility and lower speed. I'd assume double hulled vehicles with standoff armor will become a thing, or something. Along with other ECM and anti-drone lasers and shotgun tech. Need a good radar to detect them, first. Or a tiny anti air missile that's got a shrapnel warhead. Or equip every tank with multiple overwatch drones of their own. That can detect other drones within a like, 5km range, or something. It'll evolve. It's as game changing as missiles were.

When you can't get soldiers to crew a tank, create a turtle tank to give them the false security of not being suicidal.
Very good description of the turtle tank along with it's strengths and weaknesses.
Many pro-Ukrainian channels simply mocked them as 100% useless when that isn't quite the real story. Protection against small FPV drones certainly mattered in locations where Ukrainians might not have had more substantial weaponry available to counter the turtle tank. Still the many drawbacks of the turtle tank including it's vulnerability to all heavier munitions is worthy of some derision. Thanks for telling the full story.
