I use the 3rd finger as low as the E on the G string (and corresponding notes on the other strings). I call the "E fret" the "transition fret." A whole step (D to E) can be played either 1-4 or 1-3. Anything higher I use 1-3. The 19th/20th century method of waiting until the octave harmonic to use 3 is too late. Using the 3rd allows the hand to pull further from the neck and shoulder, making the problem of running into the shoulder a thing of centuries past, and allows a wider oscillation of vibrato. Plus it makes the half-step between 2-3 more easily played narrow for Pythagorean intonation.

what type of rosin do you use or prefer?
First I apply Kolstien Cello Rosin (medium) then I apply Nyman's Bass Rosin.
Mr. Morton , please, could say something about using the third finger on the "F" on the G string .... Thank you.

Gracias!
