The same applies to sweet corn in the home garden. I chop out anything that emerges beyond day 3....the stalks aren't worth the nutrients they suck up. While I realize that can't be done on a commercial basis, but when you only have an area 100 feet by 200 feet chopping out the late comers improves overall yield.

Erin, as a farmer in Ohio…what I’ve done is use a GPS app for longitude/latitude coordinates. I then pound a metal grade stake in the ground with the top painted bright orange. When it comes time to gather and check the corn I use the GPS coordinates..it gets me close, so I take my metal detector and also look for the bright orange paint..it’s how I find the metal stake…it works for me.

She mentioned using multiple devices for gps, but it only works if they have independent lists or apps. If I have a phone, desktop, and tablet all using google maps on the same account, I really only have one record. Noting gps coordinates separately is good since it can later be entered into any gps. At least she found them in a fair amount of time.

I used to use fluro spray paint to mark trials. I also marked to outside fields to show to show roughly where the trials were. I would start the season with a carton on fluro cans, a mix of colors, these stayed on the ground and marked plants for months. I renewed the markings a couple of times through the growing season. Never lost a trial.

I have a question for you about emergence. Would mixing in compost that is moist help with emergence? Basically the seed would have the nutrients and moisture available to encourage its growth. I'm thinking developing a healthier root system is what happens when a seed emerges quickly. Of course if the soil level is being depleted then that could also promote sustainability so future generations of Holberts can keep on keepin' on with farming.
