    The secret to keeping duck eggs in a nest is never pick them all up. Always leave one behind and they will return to the nest every time. I can’t trick my ducks with fake eggs so I try to remember which one I left yesterday and pick that one up so they don’t go bad.

    Careful using steaming hot water. You are actually slightly cooking the outside portion of the egg. It has not been scrambled and is therefore still connected to the inside of the shell. So that portion of the egg begins to cook at around 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Most sinks can more than comfortably exceed 135 degrees

    I think it has more to do with grain/feed. Ducks are excellent in rice fields for pest control. Rice fields are also very wet. Perfect duck environment. But our grain focus in America has been corn, oat, wheat, etc. Instead. You'd be hard pressed finding chicken feed without those things in it but ducks don't really need them the same way and sometimes chicken feeds can harm ducks as a result. Geese were well utilized all over because they graze (look up cotton patch geese). The problem is chemicals and machinery took over the job of geese so people became less interested in them (more expensive to feed and longer times to mature than chickens, limited egg window, do not handle confinement well - as you've noticed ;) ). Chickens simply eat our most prevalent waste materials and handle being in crammed cages the best for factory farming.
    As an aside: My ducks don't really poop up their eggs as bad as yours seem to?? Try giving your ducks their own special nests. I cut those 55 gal plastic barrels in half lengthwise (with one end open for the duck to shuffle inside) and leave those for my muscovies. They're too low down for geese, chickens might try to use them - but my ducks LOVE them. They feel much more secure and don't get harassed by the geese while trying to drop eggs. The eggs don't get poopy from roosting chickens or passing birds either.

  • @heathero.7643
    @heathero.7643 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    We always had this problem with our ducks. They are ground nesters so they tend to lay their eggs in muddy, high-traffic areas. We found that scooping out nesting areas from the ground kept the eggs concentrated in a few different areas, rather than all over the coop/run. They were still dirty, but it was less of an Easter egg hunt every morning. We added some hay into the dips to keep the eggs from getting wet in the mud too. The mamas don’t seem to poop on their own nest, but will definitely poop on others’ nests, so possibly reducing the density of ducks in each coop may help with the egg dirt. A dusting of Diatomaceous earth in their feed will also clear out any parasites which are causing the eggs to be laid dirty, if that may be the case with some of your birds. The parasites don’t allow the hens (both chickens and ducks are called hens) to completely close off their large intestine when passing the eggs, which leave the chicks/ducklings vulnerable to infection upon hatching from a feces-covered shell.

    I've helped take care of ducks in a large backyard. Most of their eggs were clean enough to keep and eat without any washing. Unfortunately US regulations prevent selling of eggs like that even though they are safe to eat, never need refrigeration, and last for at least a month. Of course some of the eggs are laid places where they are not safe to eat, in mud or water. Our ducks would make nests, under trees/shrubs, in stick piles, and overgrown grass. The eggs in the nests would be relatively clean, although would probably disgust someone who has only ever seen store bought eggs.

Everyone that I give my eggs to are so super surprised my eggs are so clean. I tell them to gently wash them as they’re ready to use them, no reason to refrigerate. Unfair. Ducks have bigger feet and are always in the mud searching for insects. Chickens don't like getting into the water as much and have thinner toes. LOL. I love them both and have had both at the same time. Just make some duck nests for the ducks to use and not just the geese.

    I LOVE the buttery quality of duck eggs. I buy them at the farmers market when I can afford them. The woman who sold them told me how ducks are "neurotic", leaving their eggs all over, including in mounds of poop. She said they had to scrub them under boiling water like you do. Thanks for your dedication to fine cuisine!

    I kept my coop clean and my duck eggs never had poop on them. Duck eggs have a natural coating on them that prevents bacteria from entering the pores of the eggshell. Washing the bloom off just shortens the shelf life of your duck eggs.
    If your coop is dirty and you get poop on your shells as a result, gently brush it off dry with a scotchbrite pad or nylon brush.
