Tim's Novatrope

- While Tim does have some very old toys in his collection, some over 40 years old, he is still collecting new toys, and here is a brand new toy he has just acquired that has not hit the mass market yet.
You may recall that Victorian toy called a Zeotrope, where a series of still images becomes animated when viewed through thin slits in a revolving drum? Well the Novatrope is kind of an updated version of the same principle. Basically a 3D sculpture is rotated above a series of strobing LED lights, to create an optical illusion of impossible motion.
Each sculpture is based on the spirals that you find in flowers and sea shells (think Fibonacci Sequence). The LED lights illuminate the sculpture from below in various colours, and by changing the speed of the strobe action, different motions can be created, where the structure appears to endlessly cascade.
There are virtually limitless combinations of colour and motion, and Tim is planning to experiment (well, play really!) - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
To those who are interested, this is available on Kickstarter:

What is a novatrope Tim?
@@LordMegatron66 Read that link to Kickstarter, dumphead
Dangggg they’re expensive
@@matthewevans3718 well the sculptures are 3d printed so its very time consuming. Its not something a factory can really fart out. Each one takes hours to make. $200 dollars for an object that takes that long to construct isn't unreasonable.
@@macthompson9750 makes sense
LED related stuff is so hard to capture on camera, you did a good job capturing it!
theres a cameraman you know
@@GH05TD0G90 ... bruh I mean that capturing LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) on camera is tricky because cameras cannot pick up that type of light very well. That's why LEDs flicker in videos. Like newer car lights and such.
@@SquidRider That's not right at all lol.
@@SquidRider only low quality LEDs flicker.
You are correct, the fact that the led's are strobing with a super low duty cycle makes filming Novatropes very difficult. Tim and Hendrik really did a fantastic job.
I bet this was really hard to film, low light and the leds flash at weird frequencies. Hats off for the camera man/production team.
Always get excited when I see him upload. It's like opening gifts on Christmas.
Yea, Tim is like santa
The song at the end is called Breathing Planet by Doug Maxwell
It's called Tim's theme now.
Thanks! I was going to post the question, but I thought, this is the Grand illusions audience, let me scroll a little first.
@@jsmclin Smart man
It reminded me of Mononoke Hime.
Thanks
Oh man, I would SO love a 10 hour, stable version of the footage from 4:21 onward with that music. It would be amazing to fall asleep to.
The end with the music and effects... I was Hella transported for a sec
That last one was the best of my choice, blew my mind seeing all those squares morph around, and then into each other, truly a grand illusion.
5:24 one of the trippiest visuals from a device ever, very nice job.
Raise your hand if you want an hour long video of calming music with the camera panning around the cool novatrops Tim showed off
It gives a Mandelbrot effect while spinning.. hypnotic :D
Oh wow, This is probably my favourite episode so far. You seemed so excited.
Absolutely brilliant. It appears the angle of viewing has a profound impact on the effect... just stunning.
The perfect tripping toy
I love weird optical effects like this! The cube one might be my favourite. Like dissolving sugar.
This may works better in real life than on camera, with the frame rates and all. Either way, cool toy!
I was thinking the same, there's defitively some flickering going on due to the shutter speed
Go to Kickstarter and search for novatropes and purchase one. It is definitely way better in person.
I wished I had seen the effects even longer but if that where the case I might be affraid I would have lost myself afterwards.
Why? Do you get blackouts?
@@penatio nope but it is pretty mesmeraising and kinda hypnotic.....if I look too look it kinda feels like I've been sucked into a portal going trough what could be an eternety. Or at least it looks to me that way anyway😂
I lost myself entranced in the pattern but the video ending broke the spell...
@@MrArthoz yup
@@davidmartin5483 Cool, I guess. :)
These are mesmerizing. I loved the very last one at the end of the video. Looks like a magic portal !
So nice being mesmerized by the displays at the end with the calming music, then BOOM grand illusions in ya face haha
Thank you, Tim! Thank you, Tim's crew!
Great capture of the effect! It's hard to get those right on camera!
That's some top notch nature documentary music over that little montage.
I think that the first one is a chrysanthemum. (The light show was very relaxing, and the crash cut to the outro certainly woke me up.)
This looks really incredible, both the toy and the production of this video
I have never needed a toy off of this show so bad until right now
This is great !! How did you handle the vsync issues? Between the spin rate and the camera frame rate and the youtube display rate I am surprised if this wasn't quite the fiddly issue !
We are shooting on a Canon XF705, which allows you to change the shutter speed. It took a bit of adjusting, but the end result wasn't too bad I thought.
@@grandillusions it's great ! i've rarely wanted to reach out and grab the screen so badly, it reminded me of seeing interference patterns reconstructed by coherent light, live, as a kid. I guess it's time for a trip to the science museum. also some of them made me vaguely hungry
internet user stop trying to sound like you know what you’re talking about bro
@internet user in the early days there were many slight variations on holography and refractive surfaces, as well as visual curiosities that used diffusion with early lasers. the illusions in this video somehow capture that look to me more so than videos of actual holography
@@grandillusions that is so cool! Because many videos like these have problems with the frame rates :D your channel is truly amazing!
WE LOVE YOU TIM! Never stop uploading.
That's impressive ! Quite trippy , i could watch that for ages .
Wow that thing is mesmerizing, Tim! May have to get my hands on one
Check us out on Kickstarter :)
Oh my! This would make an amazing nightlight.
In that last one I almost felt like I was falling.
MAGICAL!!! The wonderment of it all😍😍😍
THIS WAS AWESOME OMG, I need one of these asap
I found it here

Finally Tim shows us his Novatrope!
Could we get an hour long version of the end part with the music? It would be so relaxing
I saw shapes like these during my DMT trip! I couldn’t explain it in words but this is what I saw!!!
That was oddly satisfying
That's beautiful. Never knew this exists
WOW that spikey thing looks like it's literally vanishing inside the wood. That is one amazing trippy beauty!
Almost like it's 3D animation on top of recording
This looks pretty good on camera but is much more mesmerizing in person.
more than any other thing tim has shown, i want this.
Currently on Kickstarter :)
My favorite video from Tim so far trippy nostalgic
Posted right before school, thanks Tim!
Mystical Tim. Just Mystical Great Work!
I still haven't watched the video but I can guarantee you that the dude in the thumbnail is a very kind, nice man
the surprise outro timing made me piss my pants a little. Ty Tim, you rock!
Make a playlist, call it Tim’s Novatropes, add this video only, play it, put it on loop, put it beside my bed, then I fall asleep to his voice with the brightness low.
These are so beautiful! They look like some of the 3d fractals we built as graphics research in university
Tim, that was absolutely beautiful.
You know it’s a good day when Tim uploads
That is amazing!! Never seen before. thx
Wow! I loved the cube one. Incredible
I mean, it is October, so the jumpscare there at the end wasn't completely uncalled for.
Outstanding sir
Utterly mesmerising 💖
That last one was AMAZING
It's like gazing into the fourth dimension
Whoa! That's a far out trippy mind blower, man! Tim must be a closet hippy!
“I don’t know what you’d call it but it’s actually called a Novatrope.”
Well there you go.
Splendid motion picture.
Man this is the grand illusion
That's pretty cool!
Thanks for the video.
Such a beautiful day for a video
i want one i could watch that for hours
Fabulous!!!!
Tim is just that one uncle you had as a kid that hat really cool toys that you can’t play with
That's wonderful!
Tim Is Like The Bob Ross Of Toys.
They seem to be using "neopixels", or at least RGB LEDs, so they could have smooth transitions between the colours (it's not trivial, since they need to flash the LEDs at the correct rate to get the motion effect, but I believe there are already some libraries for that, namely the ones used by "LED propeller" displays).
Thank you that was awesome to see.
5:05 Mesmerizing!
I can't wait for Tim to show us his collection of glowing radioactive uranium rod's. He has everything else on earth so why not those.
Mesmerizing!
imagine playing with this when you're high lol
Really beautifful and great optical illusion thks to share with us :D
This reminds me of my youth, a lot...
That's definitely a grand illusion.
Where can i buy one?
These are brand new and you can see the Kickstarter campaign here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/novatropes/novatropes-electro-kinetic-sculptures-inspired-by-nature?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=novatropes
Also, see the Novatrope website here: www.novatropes.com/
These are awesome and well made. Check them out!
That's pretty cool!!😃👍👍
Well that really was a grand illusion
Tim is a gift from god
This is awesome!
This is so mesmerizing
Beautiful
Greatest.TH-cam.Video.Ever.
Wow so pretty!!!!
Wow, that looks incredible...
Where can I get one? Very interesting effect
This is probably what a 4D object would look like
Imagine having one of these running constantly in a room so people will walk in with no explanation and be utterly confused and mesmerized.
It's very reminiscent of early sci-fi special effects.
Wow those are awesome, thanks for sharing.
Fascinating
Oo such wonders..
Mesmerizing
Messing with the speed on the video seems to only enhance the effect, it's rather fun.
god i fucking love stuff like this
I was worried he would cut his hand stopping the spikey one with his fingers
Very nice
3:51 I get ready for the close up of his 'favourite' because I like it too. And he gets it the right speed and it does the pattern he likes, and then...nothing. All the other ones got close ups but his favourite one didn't. Cruel act by the camera person!
feel sorry for u
At 4:30 there's a good shot of it.
